Dwarves come from Norse and Germanic folklore, and were popularised partly through the Grimm brothers story of Snow White. The reason why dwarves are often depicted with a little cap is that the seven dwarves wear them in Grimm’s illustrations. This in turn is because those dwarves are miners, and German miners at that time wore those caps.

And they should sound like the Nords in Skyrim. This includes Tolkien's Dwarves, who interacted by far the most of men with Northmen as explained in one of the HoME books.

It's pretty sad when you have to worry about what voice you use in a game. Thanks for posting this, I am going to be using some of your tips and suggestions in my own game, both as a player and as a DM!

Thanks for uploading this wonderful stream, Rob! I'm very glad it's finally here, and now I can share it with my friends (fellow actors, D&D players and many others), as I did with the first one. In my opinion, both of your accent streams are pure gold, Rob, and the amount of the important knowledge, of the useful and practical tips that are compressed in these streams is really amazing. It's a great reminder for those who already know, a wonderful lesson for those who are just learning and a chance for the self improvement (always!) for those who seek it. So thank you very much for this rare and priceless gift for the community and for all who are interested in this field! Also your work on your world's cultures in general and on accents and languages in particular is unbelievable and totally admirable. It's really exciting and a great honor for me to have the privilege to learn from you (as much as I can at least)... And what's also so important - you're constantly learning yourself (as it should be), setting the very good example to others. May your work and this inspiring endlessly joyful learning process of all of us never stop... :)

Rob I so wish you'd do audiobook narration. I do love the Robert Reads series but I'd love to see you do a professionally recorded audiobook. I know you'd be great at it. I understand you are very busy and audiobooks take time to make but a guy can dream haha! Seriously though I love your voice and character work.

Little bit of a linguistics nerd, so I’ve been sitting here a bit just basically absorbing everything, because I love hearing about things exactly like this, esp. with fictional languages ( and esp. ones with real world analogs. )
Wouldn’t say no to another video or two :^) _hinthintwinkwonketc_

I wondered when the Druid turned up whether you’d seen listened to the Pratchett audiobooks read by Nigel Planer. One of his voices is very similar.

"Merger"! It's called a merger when two sounds that were previously distinct phonemes in an accent or dialect become pronounced with the same phone. Likewise, when two different phones are mentally considered to be the same phoneme (such as the T sound in "tan" versus "butter"), those two phones are considered allophones of the phoneme for the T sound.
I love linguistics and hope that clears things up.

I appreciate how in depth you went with this since I've always been impressed by the wide array of characters you play for NPC D&D. As a Scot, it's worth noting that a lot of us don't use the rhotic 'R'. Hailing from Edinburgh, my accent is surprisingly mild. You probably know this already though given that you're from the UK and understand how unbelievably varied the accents of our little island are. The same can't be said for the Americans who are utterly convinced that a "British accent" is synonymous with Received Pronunciation English. Great video.

This was such a fun video! Accents and dialects always fascinate me, especially ones within the same country. I never knew about that website either, and will definitely use it to improve on my own horrible accents. Although, it is a horrible reminder about how boring and uninteresting my own accent truly is. lol Thanks for posting this stream, Rob!

I wrote my MA thesis on Chinese languages. China has a similar distribution of languages as Europe, with some being mutually intelligible, some not. Depending on who you ask, there are five to nine linguistic families. Around 1900, it was determined that there should be a common language, and they attempted to construct one, similar to Esperanto. This didn’t catch on, and only the government officials who had to use it did so, and it was known as “the language of the mandarins”. After that, they just made the Beijing language the official standard, declaring that everything spoken in China was one single language with just lots of different dialects. In English, the name “mandarin” remained, and everyone is required to learn it. So, learn mandarin, as a few have it as their first language, and most as their second. It is very rare to learn a local dialect, like Cantonese or Shanghainese, unless you are born to it.

Ah, you want to look at my 'Narration packages'. They range from my copper package where you send me a script of what you did that day and I send back an audio recording, all the way up to my platinum package where I live with you 24/7 and follow you round with a microphone and speaker systeam.
Then, once you choose which you need, we discuss what accent, tone, pitch, tempo and vocabulary you'd like and what rating too.
All in all, about twenny bucks should do it.
