Eva is a masterpiece But by masterpiece I don’t mean flawless. I just mean it’s super impactful on so many levels it’s true art. A timeless classic of storytelling and writing. The writing is outstanding not perfect but outstanding. Probably the best show I’ve ever experienced not the THE best show but my favorite it’s not flawless and I don’t think people understand that we love it for it’s characters and it’s impact. One of the greatest (flawed) masterpieces that I’ve ever seen.
I agree, it is deeply flawed because of how personal it is, people are messy and therefore so are the things we make. But despite that, we can make great things.
I can definitely relate to much of this. I first watched Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion more than 20 years ago at a time in my life that was paradoxically very high yet simultaneously very low for me. Even though, looking back now, it feels like those were possibly some of the best years of my life they were also years where I wanted to not exist. I really, really related to Shinji and felt so much empathy for him and Asuka and Rei. It was nice to watch something where the characters actually struggled a great deal with their flaws rather than conveniently overcoming them when the time came for the "good guys" to win. Their instense struggles and many failures made them seem so much more real than any characters in any story medium that I had ever experienced before. And then learning about Anno's struggles made these character's struggles so much more. I'm glad if you're doing better and I hope life continues to look up for you.
I think thats exactly what makes Eva so powerful, no one is suddenly "fixed". Their struggles dont just disappear, they have to grow with and around them. Anno could relate that to us so well because he was in that place too. I hope life is treating you better now, have a good day friend (^^)
I love evangelion, i love how imperfect it is, i love how no one is aspiring to be good, or hero’s , but are looking to be happy , i just love how vulnerable this show is

honestly, thats part of why i love it so much, inciting me to want to be more vulnerable
after so many decades and having it somehow conclude in such a way and with that song made a life time of inspiration so wonderful.
