Not sure how Phil's bands are put together, but they are consistently very good. They are certainly my favorite permutations of the Dead. He's still one of my favorite bass players.
I love me some old school tempo changes In Jack Straw. My favorite versions are the ones where you aren't sure if they are playing fast or slow, but Jerry did play blisteringly fast. Jay
So good. This block of shows was amazing. My favorite Jack Straw. hoping this channel puts out the Halloween show closer. If they want views, nothing beats that closer.
When I got to see him it was the last thing he asked of the crowd before he left "I'm only here because of grace and an organ donor, please be a donor for someone else!"
If when you say "Bob's band" you're referring to Dead & Company. Then, no, that band played 2 shows at the Gorge recently. I attended both shows. They were mind-blowing. The best Dead & Co shows I've seen. Astonishing and fabulous.
You could argue that there are any number of jazz players with greater technical proficiency, but to my ear, NOBODY tops Phil. Not now, not ever. He's the best.
@@leshtricity I saw them in 18’ and some tunes were fantastic (Cumberland blues, Althea) where Mayer just ripped. But others were like in slo-mo. Seeing them for the final tour this summer and hoping they have some fire underneath.
Kind of like The Outlaws cover GD.Three electric guitars stepping on each other. But thankfully they could play well and it came through, kind of. I don't need to hear a Grahame Lesh solo for awhile. If not for Marcus King's name I wouldn't have clicked it. I did listen to the whole thing at least FWIW.
Great jam--one of the best I've heard in a while! You could tell they were really feeling it and reminds me of my favorite Dead jam: "Hard to Handle" from Fallout from the Philzone (ruclips.net/video/iL61lRHUFU0-/видео.html-love how the crowd gets more and more excited in this recording).
Nice energy, fun tempo changes. I’m sure it was a blast being there. Of course there is a “but”. All of these post Garcia bands have their flaws. Bobby gets bashed for his slow tempos. I get it and can’t fault anyone for that take. Phil’s bands have a tendency to be busy, as in the stage is pretty full. 3 guitarists doing lead?!?!? I’m surprised they didn’t line up front to back and sway back and forth like Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sonically it could benefit from some space.
When does the intro end? When vocals come in? Or when the allmann bros solo starts? This music always seems to start but never get anywhere. It’s on or off like super compressed except the tempo which always drags. It’s weird noodle music I can’t understand
It's about tension and release. Like a wave that builds up but doesn't crash, calms down and builds up again. You're not sure this time but then we're there and the wave finally comes crashing down with a roar and settles into calmness back where it all started. The Dead were a dance band ultimately. When you let the energy of the music do the talking by the way it moves you physically and touches you emotionally, that's when you get it.
Grahame has very big shoes to fill, but it appears he knows what to do. To quote Bob Weir (more or less): "I think we have now gotten it just exactly perfect" "
I’m sure it’s out of love for his son and the fact that he wants to spend time with him as he ages (can’t fault the man for that) but I always wish Phil would leave Grahame out of the “friends”. There’s no need for 3 guitars when the other 2 are Krasno and King.
I was there 10/28 & 10/29! Jack Straw was FIRE. Phil is simply peerless. Nicki Bluhm, Markus King, Eric Krasno were amazing. Watching Phil do what he loves with his son warms my heart and listening to such talented musicians' tribute to the Dead is truly a gift. However, Grahame really shouldn't sing any songs... No hate... but Grahame's voice kills the sweet vibes for me.
Man, why did I never catch any of these shows. Seems much more where the spirit of GD is over Dead and Co. Not that I mind that Dead and Co are out there playing. Just never seemed much interesting to me. It's the tempo I guess although it works for some tunes. I prefer what I've seen from Phil and Phriends
it's a good version but Graham's solo feels a bit egotistical when he's got two world class guitarists next to him. there's nothing wrong with playing rhythm guitar.
@Errand Wolfe hey there fellow music lover was that joke really necessary? Probably not but either way please refrain from suggesting that any musician dies. I love how music takes me to another level of enjoyment in this crazy game called life. And your an ass for saying that Bob Weir should die because his musical abilities aren't good enough, who the fuck are you except a FOOL😅
So glad Phil is still going strong after all these years. Great show, and hopefully many more to come.
His son's a fine musician too
Great song. Phil left us today but left us with decades of excellence! See you on the other side if I make the list.
Phil never disappoints. Such a master! At the end, Phil smiled because he knew that was fire.
You're right. He still feels it. And loves it like we do.
Dude, that was jack straw, not fire. 😂
That was phenomenal. Brought tears to my eyes seeing Phil going strong at 83. Sorry I missed the show.
Stellar Straw, marcus can just jam anything... and luv the smile on phil's face at the end. Thnx again for the countless share's !
The smile on Phils face speaking volumes.
@@Strik9 and Phil's son Grahame seems like he was born to play 🎸
The best of all the Dead cover bands!
Not a Dead 'Cover Band'. Grrrrrr...
@@GrahamForshaw Why not? I think Dead & Co is a cover band too.
Yet it's not the Grateful Dead neither just because Phil was leading the band that night.
Not sure how Phil's bands are put together, but they are consistently very good. They are certainly my favorite permutations of the Dead. He's still one of my favorite bass players.
‘cept The Grateful Dead perhaps
Of course.
One big Family
His bands are far superior to Weir’s. They aren’t even close.
What a great band!
I love me some old school tempo changes In Jack Straw. My favorite versions are the ones where you aren't sure if they are playing fast or slow, but Jerry did play blisteringly fast.

That's so pretty, so much sentiment and heart, a beautiful tapestry. Seeing Phil smiling like that at the end brought the tears to my eyes
Yaaaay, Phil! Great band you got there!
This is definitely a goose bump maker just wonderful!!
so beautiful i have chills

Rest in peace Phil
Phil, thank you. I am getting a heart transplant this month and I know you are a great supporter of donations.
When I got to see him it was the last thing he asked of the crowd before he left "I'm only here because of grace and an organ donor, please be a donor for someone else!"
Get well soon !
Awesome as always!
Best solo I've ever seen from Grahame there. I like the tone of the red Les Paul a lot more than the blonde 335 he often has.
amazing interplay with the other guitarist
If when you say "Bob's band" you're referring to Dead & Company. Then, no, that band played 2 shows at the Gorge recently. I attended both shows. They were mind-blowing. The best Dead & Co shows I've seen. Astonishing and fabulous.
🎶 Lesh is more 🎶
He's playin' his 6-string bass🎸🎶
Lesh filling Bass Great!
There is an infinite number of Grateful Deads continuing exponentially outward higher and higher forever forward
I hope I can still jam at 83
PHIL'S BANDS are always The Best __ he's got that Mozart/Mingus Bass Lines with GREAT Guitarists and other assorted "Musicians"
Thank you Relix ❤
Phil and friends 🎉

Now THAT’s the speed it’s supposed to be.
yup. can't stand the Dead and Co renditions that put me to sleep.

They’ve been a lot speedier on this last tour! Still play this one too slow for me tho
This one is pretty slow as well
Yes! Thank you! Rip Phil

On the contrary, I've never heard Lesh Jr. rip a solo like that. That Marcus mutant is not all he's cracked up to be.
Love it. That first 5 minutes had a major pentatonic Dickey Betts vibe. Really dug it and the transition.
The way Phil smiled when hearing the crowd's reaction to him doing Jerry's verse seriously kicks me in the feels. He and Jerry were The Dead.

That is a bad ass version.
Marcus's solo was really on point,

Valid points....I think Graham is more rythm, but agree ...we like some space....but I like it more on this side of chaotic than old n slow
I agree to that, sometimes it is just too much, players need to get out of each others way at times.
How about the drummer!! 🔥
Great song. Europe 72 days.

GREAT VIDEO, DIDN'T FEATURE MARCUS ALL THAT MUCH?
Phil was the soul of the Dead!
Is that a Warren Haynes "inspired by" Les Paul?

If Lynyrd Skynyrd had drank less and took more LSD
I think if ya gonna have Marcus on stage let him rip. Both other guitarists just sort of somewhat hogged the whole tune until the end.
Absolutely Let Marcus Shred

Now I have ta say Phil Lesh and Friends is way better than Bob's band. Bobs last show was proof he and his band need a rest.
