I would think that a servostik with this kit would not only get you the most faithful recreation of the Ikari Warriors experience since the arcade used 8-way microswitch sticks, but it'd also be less expensive than the U-360, as well.
I don’t necessarily consider clicking to be authentic. Lots of cabinets I played on used leafs which, as I’m sure everyone knows, don’t click (NVM, I see this was already mentioned).
Great video! I am just beginning to plan out an arcade and have been on the fence between the two sticks. Because I grew up in the 80s, I want to have the clicky feeling that I remember.
One thing to consider is the analog is quieter. While for authenticity the click is nice, but if you throw on headphones while the significant other is trying to read, the click can get really annoying. The analogs still have the thud if they 'bottom out' but after having a part over and digging out my old Hotrod, the clicking can get on your nerves especially during fighting games.
Very nice video. I'm planning an arcade cabinet and I'm wondering if a rotary upgrade could be added to the ultimark flight stick for those types of games.

I like your reviews. My solution to get the correct feel for every single MAME game was to build a very large panel with all the specific sticks. So I have the Ikari style rotating stick from Suzo-Happ, a U360 and both 4 way and 8-way sticks (and the gamepad and flight sticks, too). Way, overkill, I know. Caveats: the servostik software is not infallible and I find that every new layer of firmware/software is a potential failure point; and Robotron requires 2x 8-way functionality so you have to have the U360 and servostick setup as you have done. Also keep in mind that really great emus like Model 2 and Model 3 may require other combinations of controls, thus the multi-button flight stick and top-fire stick, plus its good to have a set of USB pedals.

Could you possibly do both in a future video?

If I get the U360 and put the rotary kit on it, which requires either the 4/8 way or octagonal restrictor to be installed, which plate would you recommend putting on? Can the 4/8 way plate be moved by hand from under the panel or would it be easier to just use the octagonal and use the software to make it read as 4 or 8 way? My plan at the moment is to have the main joystick for both players be the flight stick with no plate just using software restriction and have an additional stick with the rotary just for player 1 since playing with others will probably be rare enough that it won't matter if both players have it.
You can setup the restrictor to be adjusted by hand. I liked the feel of the restrictor. I actually setup a servostik restrictor on a U360 so it would switch automatically, but that is not officially supported by Andy. I use only servostiks on my big arcade machine, but I will end up using the U360's on my Arcade 1UP mod project. For that it will be 100% software restricted.
Hey! Can you confirm if it’s easy to add inserts to the rgb gold leaf buttons? I’m hoping it is easy to open the buttons up and add sticker inserts. Also I’m debating between led ball top upgrade or rotary for servosticks. I fear however that a rotary upgrade may impact the majority of games. Thoughts? Seems like you can’t do nothing upgrades so gotta choose. Leaning to led ball top just cuz of fear really
I don't recall if I attempted this, I would reach out to Andy from Ultimarc to confirm before deciding. The rotary isn't used for that many games. I would like one as well, but decided to go RGB because it looked cooler overall and for the small amount of games that do use Rotary wouldn't be worth sacrificing RGB IMO
How do the servosticks handle new PC games, let's say I want to play FIFA on the thing. Will It detect even though it's designed for analog controls? Will modern games suffer from being 8 way instead of 64 ways as an analog joystick is (in this case u360s). Is the glide effect too noticeable on the u360s? What about fighting games, how do u360s feel on that type of games? I am a huge samurai shodown fan
Samurai Showdown was so awesome. The U360's would probably be your best bet for more modern games. On my system I use the ServoStiks because I also have two gamepads for the modern games :-)

Nice cabinet. Add 2 more buttons per player so top row would be Neo Geo snk setup and add 4 way dedicated with 2 buttons beside it for your Nintendo arcade games Super Mario etc.
good idea, but I have two classic SNES controllers on either side. That way, I can play 4 player classic arcade games like Gauntlet, TMNT, or the Simpsons :-) Also, there are PS1/2 controllers on each side for those games. I'm definitely trying to keep the feel when playing my classic games :-)
I'm trying to decide between a servostick and ultrastik 360 for a MAME cab how does the servostik work with two way games like galaxian and space invaders?
I personally found that I liked the servostick better because the u360 wasn't handling diagonals as consistently as the physical switches. As far as the servo stick, you can get a left-right limiter, however, that can not be adjusted dynamically by the hardware. But, if you use the 4-way to 8-way limiter, it then at least gives more of the restricted feel like the original.
Yeah, I was talking to Andy when I visited London and told him about that guy that made the center fire, rotary, LED, servo stick... it's nuts... I would love the rotary, but he hasn't figured out how to do it and still have the LED ball yet. Once he's got that down, I'm totally there :-)
If I get the U360 and connect 8 RGB buttons to the joystick, what board do I need to illuminate the buttons? PAC LED or Ipac ultimate? My goal is to use LEDBlinky.
Just to clarify, the buttons wouldn't connect to the Joystick. The U360 is a USB joystick so it would be handled separately then the RGB buttons. Andy just released a new buyers guide to help answer these questions, but it seems the most common answer for all illuminated options are the IPAC Ultimate. I fully agree with this, the price difference isn't that great and you have tons of options with the ultimate, better to over deliver than not have what you need :-) www.ultimarc.com/BuyersGuide.pdf
@@MavericksArcade Thanks for the reply. I thought I read you could plug up to 8 buttons to the Ultrastik 360 without the need for an Ipac. I do have an IPAC 2 already. The reason for the Ultrastik is because I want to take advantage of the analog functions
OH! I stand corrected, and it's time for another video! - LOL --- Thank you! So in that case, yes, you could connect the buttons, however, to light them, you would need a separate LED controller to use with LED Blinky. In which case, a little PACLED64 would work fine... This will be a fun project. I'll then need to see if I can test it in various devices :-) Good times.
JUst wondering if you might also experience this with the servo stick , to me its not a true 4 way and 8 way. When I play games like pacman or robotron there is a dead space in the corners . do you get this as well, I just installed the stick wrong. let me know if you wouldnt mind thanks
I haven't had that problem myself, but that could also be from me replacing my sticks with the light-up ball sticks. Also, the metal part against the switches can be adjusted slightly to make the joystick more sensitive. Let me know if this helps at all :-)
which one is faster to move and more has more accurate inputs? i need it to play smash bros and some adventure games it works on a console fightstick? or only for pc?
I've never considered these for any console systems, they're made just for PCs. The both respond quickly, but the accuracy for 4-8 way seems better to me with the servo as they're separate buttons. The u360 can be extremely accurate and use analog if configured well through the software. But personally, for console system emulation I use PS3 gamepads.
Yeah, my concern has more to do with response time. In a game bad setup, you go from up/down/left/right with simple rolls of your thumb, even when it comes to sticks for consoles its a short distance stick. With an arcade joystick it's a larger stick and therefore a longer throw. Think of it like racing a manual shift car. Yeah, you can go fast with a normal gear selector, but you can shift much quick with a short-throw shifter because the travel distance between gears is much shorter. Same thing here, a full U360 joystick isn't going to be as quick as a PS3/4, Gamecube, N64 type controller.
@@MavericksArcade What about just shortening the stick so there isn't much travel distance? Would that work better? :ooo Even if the joystick isn't the best with the game, Imma add controller ports under the control panel anyways. Gotta have those options available.
@@Austin_2600 The issue is the long throw has to be enough to make it through the case and not hit the edges of the cutouts. Again, its definitely possible, but for most quick response games I personally use the gamepads. However, I'm going to be trying to fully setup MK11 on the arcade with lit controls once I got the funds to do so :-)
I have to disagree with your choice - the 360 can do Qbert & Congo Bongo or any diagonal game. The servo - NOPE! So you need ANOTHER stick for 4 way diagonal games. The "click" really is minor. Many arcades replaced original sticks when they wore out (which was often ) not all sticks have a solid tactile click - especially leaf spring sticks, which many consider better than the clicky microswitch sticks. Leaf switch sticks were often original on many machines - so clicks aren't necessarily "authentic". With proper programming, the 360s are as accurate as restricted sticks (or you can add the servo restricter ). Personally, I dont miss the resrictor. But I do want to add the rotator top. Lastly, the 360s do a fantastic job in analog mode and can play 48 way games like Sinistar accurately. The 360 is very hard to beat - especially if space is at a premium.
Brian Dormer the servo can be set for 8-way mode for diagonals. But to each their own :-). I've been able to get every game to work that's non-analog. I had some issues with the u360 going diagonal at times when I should have been just 4-way but I could have restricted it further digitally. I love the RGB handle which sealed the decision for me. I would like the rotator functionality but it wasn't critical for me. Someone linked in this conversation a hack that is the u360 with the servo AND the rotation. It's wicked!
Using the diagonals on an 8 way stick with games like Qbert, in my experience, leads to a really crummy gaming experience. While I agree it "CAN" work - I've never seen it work WELL. Programming the U360 to go diagonal is a little tricky (I don't know why Andy doesn't just publish a proper diagonal config) - but once you get it dialed in - it's equally as good as a dedicated 4 -way diagonal stick. My wife and I used to rock on Qbert in the arcade (for 50 cents - we could play for close to an hour). With the U360 - my scores are pretty similar to 'the old days'. The only disappointing thing with the U360s is the lack of RGB ball tops (I can live without it - but it is very cool looking). Apparently, the rotating top is quite pricey as well as currently out of stock. So I just may not do it - I never played IKARI in the arcades, so I really don't miss it.
the 360s are fantastic, I am using two of those for my analog control needs and I prefer them over a gamepad (longerh throw allows more precise analog movement) in a controller panel which scales up to modern analog stick games. The servos are on their way, lets see how they scale up (they are supposed to replace two IL magnetics which i am not happy with for 8 way controlled games)
Yeah the 360 is a fantastic stick, I am even playing modern 3d games with a pair of them in my setup (Witcher 3 is a no brainer, the same goes for older emulated games, like super monkey ball). The plus side of this is that you get a way more fine grained movement control that you would with a gamepad. The down side is, the button layout is a bit of getting used to gamepad controls -> arcade control layout do not map that well and then there is the lack of analog trigger buttons, a minor issue, only racing games use those in analog mode. The best combo is, if you have a game with mouselook and analog stick and you can use the 360 for analog movement and a trackball for mouselook.
The fact that it's digital and provides analog support would definitely make it feasible to perform that role. You may also want to consider connecting optional gamepads when playing those games :-)
Heyo! Apologies if my questions come off as a bit lazy/uninformed but I haven't been able to find a ton of information regarding the topic. Would it be possible to put the 360 into a standard arcade stick enclosure? If so, would I be able to hook it up to a Brooks Universal PCB and still have it as an analog output? Or, would I need to plug all the buttons into 360 and use the USB cable to plug them all into my PC/Console for it to work properly?
The U360 only connects with USB, so you could probably put a small USB hub inside the enclosure. Plus the U360 into the HUB, and your PCB in the hub as well. The only question then would be if you would need a USB powered hub or not :-/
@@MavericksArcade Heyo, sorry to bother you again but I figured I'd give an update on my U360 project. Using a USB hub doesn't seem to work as both the PCB and it's buttons, as well as the joystick seem to identify as two separate devices, assuming the joystick gets picked up at all when trying to use it with the Nintendo Switch. I'm not entirely sure where to go from here aside from looking for a USB to 6 pin cable so I can plug the joystick into a secondary PCB I have in the enclosure.
That makes since, I didn't realize you were trying to make this work with a Nintendo Switch. So you're trying to make one of those competition joystick things? Is that right? Yeah, I'm not sure if you'd be able to convert it. You may want to reach out to Andy at Ultimarc and see if he can provide you more information about the wiring, and possible options he may have available to accommodate this. :-)
@@MavericksArcade Yeah, probably should've specified that in the first reply. I've sent Andy an email asking for help, and if he can't do so, a refund.
The servo-stick would work like any other joystick through a keyboard emulator/controller. The big question would be if there is a Linux way to control the servo motor. For that, I would reach out to Andy at Ultimarc to see if there is an option. Otherwise, the sticks could be set in hardware mode and you could dedicate a button to toggle between 4 and 8 way :-)
Thanks! Anyway for me to use a u360 joystick and a xarcade minipac together? I was told that the u360 needs to stay usb plugged in to be analog. I am stuck trying to get street fighter x tekken and other pc games working with both. X360ce and vjoy dont seem to be the solution or more than likely, I am doing something incorrect. All my other systems are 100% good!
The u360 definitely needs to stay USB for analog. The Minipac just being used for buttons? I'm confused why that would be issue. The u360s should just appear as normal joysticks and the buttons as keyboard buttons or possibly gamepad buttons. What's happening when you try to map the controls? Or is it only taking one control or another, not inputs from two seperate sources? I'm making guesses here so bear with me :-)
Thanks for the response. I figured it out after a few days of tinkering. I am using JoytoKey to handle the u360 and the minipac. Once in awhile I add Vjoy when needed.
Yes atm there is no board which takes the analog signals from the u360 not even the i-pacs to my knowledge, it is all usb, however the u360 has 8 button connectors so for simpler setups you might be able to just connect the 8 buttons to the analog stick and then push everything into one usb connection as one analog stick with 8 buttons. For more complicated setups you have to use an additional translator board and then combine everything with vjoy or something similar into one virtual stick.
Is the point of the servostik just the auto-switching between locked 4 and 8 way? My current setup (not ultimarc) has a simple 8 way, and MAME seems to do fine with 4 way games. Is there an "basic" 8 way" equivalent to the servostik? Sorry, that may be a question i should send to ultimarc directly? Thanks again for the great videos!
I believe the ServoStik is just a J-Stik with the motor attached. If you wanted just a 8-way joystick you could get a J-Stik with a fixed 8-way restrictor plate and that would do the job. You could also get the illuminated handle for the J-Stik, just like the servo-stik.
so ive been trying to find a good analog stick to use for a smash bros fightstick, do you think id be able to just buy this and plug it into the pcb of my fight stick to replace the current joy stick or is that not an option given the fact that this stick is analog?
The ultimarc 360s only work in analog mode to my knowledge if you hook them up to a usb directly, however you also can hook up to 8 buttons to a single stick, so in many cases you wont even need a separate board anymore.
@@werpu12 i only want it yo be analog, i just wanted to know if i would be able to replace the digital stick in my fight stick and replace ti with an analog
@@DarlingAFK No direct popping in, because the analog stick only works in analog mode as separately connected usb stick, in the best case you have to rewire all buttons to your analog stick in the worst case you have to use something like vjoy. Connecting the Ultimarc 360 to an existing board will result in digital output only. I think not even the Ultimarc I-Pacs take the analog signals. Also there is a slight deadzone area in the stick, I have two of those and the from me enforced deadzone is around 5-10%. Given that this is basically the zone where there is no backforce (still getting signals for the movements in that zone but there is no clear zero zone the stick goes automatically back to) I am not sure if you can fix that on the hardware side. I Iive with it, it is in reality not that bad and barely noticable.
Hello Questions that may interest arcade cabinet possessors equipped with 2 ultrastick 360 I'm looking desperately how to play geometry war (on Steam) arcade terminal equipped with 2 ultrastick 360 There is a possibility to assign the 2nd player's stick for shooting in Geometry war (version 2 and 3)? It looks like some people are able to get it to work and others are not depending on your hardware. Some people stated that both the U360s gets treated as one device. I don't know the answer, but here's the thread I last looked at: steamcommunity.com/app/451340/discussions/1/1480982971166645996/
You can use vjoy with ujr to map a number of devices to a single device and then use this device for controlling the games over steam (steams remapping function can help). Thats the way I was able to use my own arcade panel for The Witcher 3 and other modern games like FF XV.
thanks for the video could you let me know if you have a video on the U360 stick with the rotation function? along with the recommend parts I would require to build a joy stick with the rotation. I was hoping to make my build for both arcade games retro consoles I was hoping to see if i could use this function for games like golden eye from the n64 with a light gun. Could you let me know if that would be possible?
They appear white, slightly translucent, which makes it look like a milky white color. They look like the ClassicRGB lights when powered off. Or like the translucent trackball when powered off.
can you set either of these two joysticks 2-way, 4-way, 8-way automatically? The servostik can do it automatically but can it do 2-way as well? can the u360 also do the transition automatically?
The servo sticks are 4-way or 8-way, it does not restrict 2 way. The U360 is digital and you can restrict the input however you'd like using the software. The mapping is done through a mapping file which can be applied to the command line. If I was going to do that, I'd probably make another MAME emulator setting with the 2-way defined so it would run before 2-way games. Check out my video specifically on the Servo stick to see how I recommend to handle the game changes.

I fully agree with this, the price difference isn't that great and you have tons of options with the ultimate, better to over deliver than not have what you need :-)
www.ultimarc.com/BuyersGuide.pdf
Let me know if this helps at all :-)
U da mann. Those would be nice for Forgotten Worlds or ECO fighters as well
True
which one is faster to move and more has more accurate inputs?
i need it to play smash bros and some adventure games
it works on a console fightstick? or only for pc?
I've never considered these for any console systems, they're made just for PCs. The both respond quickly, but the accuracy for 4-8 way seems better to me with the servo as they're separate buttons. The u360 can be extremely accurate and use analog if configured well through the software. But personally, for console system emulation I use PS3 gamepads.
I'm wondering the exact same thing. I'm building a Smash Ultimate Arcade Machine and need a good 360 analog joystick.
:ooo
Even if the joystick isn't the best with the game, Imma add controller ports under the control panel anyways.
Hello
can i used the Ultrastik 360 Stick analog function with the I-PAC Ultimate I/O Board, or goes only digital output?
You can put it in non-analog mode. Review my U360 is even cooler for this information :-)
the u360 can be plugged in usb mode and not use the ipac for stick input
Do you think that the UltraStik 360 would work well for more modern games such as smash bros on switch or 3rd person camera control?
The fact that it's digital and provides analog support would definitely make it feasible to perform that role. You may also want to consider connecting optional gamepads when playing those games :-)
@@MavericksArcade done....x 4 players take a gander this message will self destruct
Does a servostick work on a raspberry pi?
@@werpu12 okie dokie, thank you so much for explaining it to me
Hope everything is running well, thank you werpu12 for helping out :-)

Hello
Questions that may interest arcade cabinet possessors equipped with 2 ultrastick 360
I'm looking desperately how to play geometry war (on Steam) arcade terminal equipped with 2 ultrastick 360
There is a possibility to assign the 2nd player's stick for shooting in Geometry war (version 2 and 3)?
Merci
It looks like some people are able to get it to work and others are not depending on your hardware. Some people stated that both the U360s gets treated as one device. I don't know the answer, but here's the thread I last looked at:
steamcommunity.com/app/451340/discussions/1/1480982971166645996/
I know they have rotation controls out there, but I haven't personally been able to experience these yet.
Hey is your servostik balltop white when its off or is it a colour just off of white?
They appear white, slightly translucent, which makes it look like a milky white color. They look like the ClassicRGB lights when powered off. Or like the translucent trackball when powered off.
Just to confirm its supposed to look like this? imgur.com/vh6XHcA
Yes it does
are you running launch box as the front end Here?
Well, BigBox, so yes/no :-)
nice. I've just started playing around with it. just subbed to your Channel!
can you set either of these two joysticks 2-way, 4-way, 8-way automatically? The servostik can do it automatically but can it do 2-way as well? can the u360 also do the transition automatically?
The servo sticks are 4-way or 8-way, it does not restrict 2 way. The U360 is digital and you can restrict the input however you'd like using the software. The mapping is done through a mapping file which can be applied to the command line. If I was going to do that, I'd probably make another MAME emulator setting with the 2-way defined so it would run before 2-way games. Check out my video specifically on the Servo stick to see how I recommend to handle the game changes.
Ciao bellissimo
Thank you :-)
there is no click on "real" arcade joysticks....that is the point
This is true, but you could feel the mechanics of it.
