good advice , I keep mine half full just to make sure I have gasoline if the power goes out and pumps guit working, lol .... bonus .... keeps condensation down in tank also.
Just cut an access hole for the the FP in the floor board after watching youtube videos ..such a great alternative to dropping the tank ..this young man in videos is very Astro smart ...thanks
Bro your doing a great job here is another hot tip only use silicone between the removable part and gasket as it makes it easier to clean the gasket off later. Non removable parts are usually very difficult to clean because there not removable so must be cleaned in place. Usually standing on your head! Just saying keep up the great work!!! Love it!
Next time you flush the rad/ coolant system,, get a piece of hose on the nip of the petcock . Then hos strait way to empty jug. Save you a ton in cleanup
Hi I just wanted to comment and say thank you! I have no clue on any mechanic thing other than put air on my tires or put fluids. I’m working on a 1999 chevy astro van myself it is my dads car he has leukemia. So this is a project I want to complete and for him to feel proud. It has only 131xxx miles and it runs well no issues at least from what I can see but I will be changing everything your suggesting well just because I don’t want any issues later on. And I know he hasn’t done anything to it in a while. Anyways wish me luck! And thank you again for the video!
You got this Veronica! Be patient and don’t rush through anything is my biggest piece of advice. If you have any questions along the way message me on IG: Builds United You got this. Your father will be very proud.
THANK YOU FOR WHAT TO DO ON THIS VAN. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A 2005 ASTRO VAN. WE HAVE A SCOOTER AND WHEELCHAIR TO HAUL AROUND SO THIS GIVES US AN IDEA OF WHAT TO FIX.
The fuel filter and fuel pump information was great, reaiiy helped to know exactly how and where to cut the hole. I also want to turn the Van into a camper.
If you put a beaded silicone on the rotary cap where it seals to the distributor is self just along the bottom edge and let it dry you can stop it from allowing moisture and water into it.
Just binged this series up till now! Awesome stuff going on and so much helpful tips and tricks. Recently got a 01 safari from my grandpa and its been a bit of a project car lol I haven't been able to work on much of the interior build but have the same idea of setting up a camper van in the future. This video and your other one on general issues of this kind of van have been the most helpful at the mechanical side. I have alot of this same process to go and will have your video next to me to pass the inspections! Great content, keep it up!
Hey! Thank you Jake! I am glad they videos were helpful! If you have any questions with the future projects please do not hesitate to comment on the video or message me directly on Instagram @Automotivate_
Pay close attention to the gap between the bottom of the grill and the top of the front bumper! I put my 2001 on a two post lift, the front bumper was in contact with the grill and twisted upwards! When I lifted the van the bumper dropped and a gap of over an inch appeared! I checked and the two front sub frame mounts are totally rusted free from the body! Time to junk it I guess!
i had my crank sensor go out and it didnt show me any code at all....i took me a couple weeks of messing with the van and replacing many sensors until i got to this one and it simply started right up.....
You have an Astro. You will definitely get stranded on the side of the road again. I have had Astros for a very long time and it is a love/hate relationship.
95 Chevrolet Astro Van VIN W stalls. Removed plenum found injector electrical connector damaged and broken. Bare wires dangling pulled from injector. Back to Napa for a injector electrical connector. Installed new injector and electrical connector, put it all back together Chevrolet Astro Van running better than brand new!
Wear long sleeve shirt and full length pants. Short shorts is for beach volleyball, not working on a greasy van. You donned white gloves to r&r the crank sensor and walked away with a greasy forearm. Appreciate the video none the less. I've a 99 Astro.
Go ahead and replace the intake gasket if you plan to do any long road trips.while you've got that stuff apart..do a tune up and use Taylor plug wires.cheaper than a set of a.c. delcos( which are way better than your local parts stores)and you will never change them again.ive got 2 sets on different vehicles.both have over 150k miles on them.
lol, seems like most of the run down Astros came from the same person. Appreciate it. I have moved all my new Astro content to another channel if you want to follow the progress without other content flooding your home page: RUclips.com/BuildsUnited
Might want to consider getting 1/2” drive Ryobi impact gun. Makes getting tires off very easy and fast. While you are at it pick up Ryobi tire inflator to complete your emergency tire kit…
Distributors are designed to last the life of the engine. GM engineers had no idea at the time that these 4.3 Vortecs were going to last so long. Replaced the distributor in my -99 Sarfari at 410 K and my odometer has just passed 536 K.
Hey I have a 99 safari all 4 off the back windows have popped out and I then all secured with duck tape. Any recommendations on how I can get those fixed?
I’ve removed many lugs. Sometimes lugs are so tight that using your bodyweight simply doesn’t work. It also depends what kind of tool you use. The cross bar you would not be able to remove the lugs with your body weight. The breaker bar, you can control the removal of the lug nut by using muscle you can control instead of trying to sit on the bar.
@@AutoMotivate Using your foot and body weight is the way smarter way to break them free. Mechanical work and working out are 2 different things. Recommending people pull up is just plain wrong. No offense intended but astros have a huge cult folowing of very knowledgeable people. No pro mechanic or tow truck guy would try to do a squat to loosen lugs. (I am a 22yr mechanic and motorcycle racer sidenote)
@@smoknjoe73 I appreciate your opinion. Using proper form, you can pull way more than your body weight if need be. Straight back and using your legs, you will not have any issues. Most mechanics do not understand the anatomy of the body, which is why they advise that. However, some nuts are torqued more than the weight of someone.
Hey, you have some great videos and seem knowledgeable about a variety of cars. I'm curious though, how did you learn so much abt vehicles? I'm trying 2 learn how to fix cars myself since I'm tired of lemons&expensive repairs.
Hey there! I appreciate it. It all started with my first car, 1976 MGB. Bought it broken down and with a bit of help from my dad to get it running and a friend who also owned an MGB helped me keep it running. I then continued the trend of driving cars that need work. I guess I like torturing myself, but I do end up learning a lot that way. Just dive in! RUclips is the best teacher for most things as a DIYER.
Awesome video you have a new Sub. i have a quick question , i just bought my 2nd GMC Safari the 1st one i still have but built it with all wood , this Safari i want to build with all shag carpet , but i watch ALOT of youtube videos about vans & none or almost none build with carpet , do you know why , is there a legit reason why people don't build with carpet on walls and ceiling ? like moisture or hard to clean , or is it just personal preference if you can answer this would be such an amazing help thanks man keep the great videos coming.
Hey! I appreciate the support, friend! From what I could gather, and the reason I took the vinyl flooring route is the ease of cleanup. The carpet on the floor collects a lot of debri, dust and if you spill a drink, it wouldn’t be easy to clean up. Imagine trying to vacuum the floor. I like the ease of cleanup. I can easily sweep out the dirt after I camp and such.
@@AutoMotivate Thanks for the reply & help , i get the whole cleanup thing that would be annoying , maybe I'll just put carpet on the walls and ceiling , unless that would be bad as well , not sure about moisture , but i do see how wood through out the van would be so much easier. keep up the great videos #vanlife #forlife
I think the carpet on the walls and roof would be fine but it you would still have an issue with cleaning it thoroughly. Carpet collets smell, dirt, and dust. If you can get more of a fabric instead, you’ll be better off imo. I’m just thinking of the long term issues and such
@@AutoMotivate thank you yeah i didn't think of the possible smells yicks yeah i think i might just do wood seems so much easier thanks again you been a great help i'm not to camera smart with video taking lol but i might try and learn and make videos of it.
@@BT-dl8kq thank you so much for the info , its very helpful i didn't know about that material similar to carpet, that is awesome i'll def. try that thank you again.
😂😂 oh great. Luckily I haven’t seen any leaks so far. I’ll keep a closer look now on. The kit didn’t come with a new gasket. I’m sure if it needed it, it would have, right?
One question. It seems you are changing out parts but not mention why you are doing so. Like the rad and the master you mention but never say why you are doing them. CPS also. Seems the van cranked both before and after the change. (?)
Just preventative maintenance. The previous owner did not take care of the van and it sat for a long time. Would rather change the rad now instead of the possibility of it going bad during a drive. The CPS is just a common fault area and cheap enough to change.
CLEANING ALL THE GREASE OFF THE ENGINE WILL ACTUALLY MAKE IT RUN COOLER! SO KRUD KUTTER, KRUD KUTTER!!! AND SOAPY POWER WASH (COVER ELECTRONICS) THE BLAST THE H-LL OUT OF IT!

From a fellow 1995 Astro lover, I apprecicate younger people loving and keeping them going! Much respects!
Always keep the fuel tank half way full to full, this keeps the fuel pump cool. The fuel pump on these overheats and they are expensive to replace.
good advice , I keep mine half full just to make sure I have gasoline if the power goes out and pumps guit working, lol .... bonus .... keeps condensation down in tank also.
Just replaced mine and now with a proper seal it smells like gas inside the van.. it's a safari
Just cut an access hole for the the FP in the floor board after watching youtube videos ..such a great alternative to dropping the tank ..this young man in videos is very Astro smart ...thanks
Highly recommend tightening the torsion bar bolts about 4 turn really help me with body roll and just a all around better ride

You saved a lot, lot, lot of money doing that all yourself.
Proper way to do lug nuts it to push down with body weight and not pull up with legs/back
Yep, Pancake disease very common on the Astro vans... Just replaced distributor cap on my 2005
Luckily fixing them isn’t very expensive and relatively easy!

To avoid injury breaking the lugs loose, STAND on the breaker bar.
If you have a straight back and use your legs it's safer then your proposal. 100%.

The distributor cap?
FYI is WAAY smarter to use gravity to push DOWN to use gravity and body weight to break lugs free.
I’ve removed many lugs. Sometimes lugs are so tight that using your bodyweight simply doesn’t work. It also depends what kind of tool you use.
