- *only a little bit // Thanks to Quilter Labs for sending out the Illumine to check out: www.quilterlabs.com/products/...
The Illumine Reverb is near and dear to my heart for many reasons, but maybe most of all because this was one of the first products I got to see develop from the very start as a product designer and marketer. It's been a long winding journey, but seeing the Illumine grace the boards of so many incredible players is still a career highlight.
Now it's my turn! Grab a coffee and sit down with me as I roll through and explore the many modes of the Illumine and show off a few of my favorite settings and sounds, mode by mode.

I ran an expanse for many years, with the Disaster Area NNB controlling it via MIDI and it was epic. The plate is my absolute favorite plate verb of any pedal verb ive ever tried. It became part of MY SOUND and ive been on Helix 2.5 yrs now without the Expanse.... i dont hate the verbs in Helix, but i sure do miss the Neunaber stuff. I cant wait to pickup the Illumine and run it in the stereo fx loop of Helix. These verbs are sooooo good.

Great video. Love your channel!
Thanks for checking it out!!!
Beautiful sounds in this box! What are your headroom and mix summing settings on? Stock? I have one and have fiddled with them and am not sure which may be the best.
Love this! The Wet always has been one of my favorite reverbs because it pairs so nicely with dirt, especially higher gain. And this thing is even cooler. Although I strongly dislike the 2 knobs design it doesn't feel overly complicated.
Please do a follow up with some niche sounds like you did with the Big Sky? :)
Thanks my friend! It really is a special box.
I'll have to think about 5 sounds haha, it's so new to me that I don't know that I would know where to start!
how to load presets here if it has no usb? I saw on their website prest pack.
you use a USB midi interface to access the preset manager! A strymon conduit or morningstar device would be able to do that for you I believe or something like an M audio Uno
@@signalpath thanks
I wiiiiish they put two Spin FV-1 chips in this pedal. Not having spillover on a preset-capable ambient reverb pedal is a hard fit for live use compared to other do-it-all style reverbs. Loooove its I/O, every pedal company should adopt its I/O style.
agreed on the I/O. I think it's an interesting thought, but I wonder what that would have done to costs
I haven't really found a ton of need within a transition to do much more than the A->B switch for most purposes, but I wonder if they'll ever iterate forward with that kind of concept
@@signalpath a Spin FV-1 chip is ~$10, some sort of relay/mixer design to route between the two might be $15, and I assume there's already an MCU for UI, presets, and whatnot but let's say the MCU needs beefing up and add $5... not THAT much difference in costs it seems to me.
Other all-in-one reverb pedals of similar price range use several times as expensive DSP chips, need converters (the FV-1 has converters built-in), need higher power regulators, have bigger enclosures, more knobs and footswitches, etc., so I don't think it's a material costs issue... really expected it to have two FV-1 chips in there for its price *paper bag over head emoji*

I had to refresh to see your comment.
I think what John is saying is that he was actually the first@@JohnQuilter
@@signalpath I was here before you created the video. 🤣🤣🤣
I absolutely love the sounds of this pedal, but to be honest - the UI has kept me away. I tried it, got frustrated and moved it on and sold it (probably too quickly). Which sucks because I want something that sounds great, has presets and doesn't have a huge footprint. I might have to take another crack at it tho..
Huh I found the UI surprisingly great, surprisingly easy to use with just two knobs.
To be honest it was a big snag for me at the start, but I feel like outside of not being able to easily visually reference where my settings are at, it's kind of like, sonically what do i need more/less of and then I just navigate to make that change. It's a much less visual way of working, but I'm starting to actually get pretty quick at it
It definitely helps that most of these algos are incredibly forgiving, I feel like you can get 90% of what you need from the wet modes just adjusting depth
@@signalpath it does sound incredible. My go-tos at the moment are the Merc7 and the Specular Tempus (70s plate is soooo good) but I almost wish I could mix them. Haha. The Wet algos are fantastic!!
The UI is surprisingly easy. I mostly use the presets with midi, but tweaking them is pretty straight forward. I've also found it easier to navigate than Strymon's stuff as well as the Immerse MKII which I had before it, because most of the presets are already useable and you don't need to figure out sounds for yourself.
@@13aphomet The Specular Tempus has one thing that the Illumine does not, a really nice shimmer. But if you can figure out the interface of the Specular Tempus, the Illumine should be a snap.
