This was a touching episode. At the end, Odo and Kira seek solace with each other, having come out of an experience with a young life better for it, but still hurt over what it cost.
The ultimate fusion of elation and heartbreak... Odo regains his power to shape-shift, but at the cost of losing what he was coming to see as his child. It's especially poignant in the wake of his previous conversation with Quark.
Makes me well up. All Odo can do is hold the changeling and beg it not to die.
And maybe it didn't. Maybe by fusing with Odo, it made itself a part of him. And he was able to teach it to become a Tarkalean hawk... by becoming one.
This beautiful scene makes me think of Samus Aran and the Baby Metroid in Metroid: Fusion and Metroid: Dread. Samus is infected by an X Parasite on SR388, and is only saved by an infusion of a cell from the Last Metroid that viewed Samus as its mother and sacrificed itself to save her.
Both the Baby Metroid gave to Samus and the Baby Changleling gave to Odo the same thing: Abilities that would ultimately save their respective civilizations. Samus gained an immunity to the X Parasites and the ability to absorb them, which was the only way she succeeded in wiping out the X out in Fusion and Dread. Odo regained his shapeshifting abilities, as well as influence with the Vorta, Jem'hadar, and even the Female Changeling, which was key in ending the Dominion War.
And now, a piece of their surrogate children will live on within both Samus and Odo.
This scene shows why DS9 was by far the best Trek ever made.
Nana was pregnant with Alexander Siddig baby which is why they invented the story line.
And if you're a longtime fan you know the mostly young male writers/producers (Behr,Wolfe,Moore,Echverria, Beimler)were tight & had great relationships with women, wives & had to fight or undercurrent support the female actresses & characters vs the old school misogynist Berman.
Nana would've been written off or something stupid if not for Ira's wife mentioning why not a scifi excuse for Kira getting pregnant for more interesting complicated storylines. Boom there it is.
