The Tin Coaster. Exploring Cornwall's Rich Mining Heritage (by Bus).

  • I had a few hours left in Penzance so decided to take a 'last minute' bus ride up to Boscaswell (Pendeen) on the North Cornwall coast. Only 35 minutes this trip, but it was a real taster of the rich mining heritage in this part of the world.
Come with me as I show you the scenery, the bus and how much it all costs to enjoy a lovely day out by public transport from Penzance. There are quite a few other 'tourist buses' available in season too and I'll touch on these as we go along.
Thanks so much guys for watching this content. It's really appreciated and if you yourselves have been on any of these bus trips down here (or can recommend some more), I'd love to hear about them in the comments below.
    Cheers for now,
    Mark

Bottalack is the tin mine Charles Dickens visited about 18 months before he wrote A Christmas Carol, and it is said he got the inspiration for the scene where Scrooge is taken to a mine by the spirit of Christmas present.

What Britain stands out for is the many number of scenic bus journeys with double deckers and open toppers, prettu much unmatched elsewhere in Europe.
Cornwall is definitely of my bucket list at some point

I certainly think that the one outstanding feature of British bus services is the fact that many scenic routes are worked by double-decks!

Also outstanding thanks to our bus services (although we moan about them!) are pretty reliable - and, on the whole, safe: something you can't say about Greyhound in the US.

Another good video I have travelled this area on the buses a few times while hiking in the area. It is truly stunning. And the buses are so cheap for the trip aswell so very worth every penny. I think with the main Cornwall Buses which I belive that company is called Transport for Cornwall which thier buses are red you can travel anywhere in Cornwall for £5 so you could go from for example Saltash to Penzance or Penzance to Bude for £5 for example so very worth the money. Some bus journeys can be very long though.

This is an absolutely splendid video. I am an enthusiast for all forms of public transport. This is the best BUS video I have ever seen on you tube. I went to the website for a timetable. The route to Boscaswell is now simply number 17. But there is still a quite decent service, roughly hourly including Sundays, but no evening service.

The last time I was in Penzance (about 3 years ago) the bus station was an island configuration, they must've changed it. I also stayed in the Premier Inn & went to lands end & did the open top bus to St Ives, it was early October but it was still warm. I gave myself the choice of going to the Scilly Isles on the boat or going to the Theme park in Helston (both were about the same price) & I chose the theme park.

@@LetsMakeaTrip Pleasure I saw a sign at Warrens Bakery in St Ives last visit. The first traditional Cornish Pasty bakery in the UK was Warrens in St Just - opened in 1860. But I think it sadly closed in 2019. Up until then they were homemade but could be fruit or any ingredients made for the miners - crimped edges because of dirty workers hands. Some dispute whether they originated in Devon or Cornwall though in the 1200 or 1300s 👍

Also ,the Lands End Coaster bus heads out east from Pendeen, continuing along that B road to Zennor and St Ives, and then round back to Penzance via Marazion which is by the tidal causeway across to St Michael's Mount, As you said, the whole round trip, ( in either direction from Penzance), takes about three to three and a half hours I think.! It's spectacular journey virtually throughout. My fave section of all is between St Ives and Pendeen, with moorland hills inland, and views across lush farmland to the coastal cliffs and sea on the other side. The route is a circular route running throughout the year both clockwise and anti-clockwise The circle is completed with the route between Penzance and St Just via Newlyn, Lamorna, Porthcurno, (for the Minack Theatre), Land's End, Sennen Cove, and Land's End Airport.

Incidentally, does anyone know of any bus timetables that indicate the type bus scheduled to run for each journey, (a bit like a bus version of the realtraintimes, or is it realtime trains, website). perhaps. My local bus services connect Southampton and Fareham with either Portsmouth or Gosport. They are mainly single- deckers, including some new electric buses too, but also, especially in the summer half of the year and/or weekends, quite a scattering of double deckers. If I knew when the double deckers were running, i'd aim to catch those if possible, be it for business or pleasure !
