I actually just started watching/reading Nichijou, odd enough even when the jokes don't make sense and make me go "what the fuck was that?!" it kind of adds to the enjoyment for me
It's strange, because I know exactly what you mean. I think No Game No Life Zero was a good example of something that I did not understand whatsoever, but could appreciate because it felt like this was a complicated world with hundreds of moving parts I'll never comprehend, making the triumph of the main characters all the more satisfying
I was legitimately surprised by Nichijou's humor/surrealism being controversial. I guess I can't really place exactly why I like it, but I suppose its open-endedness is the main point of engagement. Not only that, but it sorta demands my attention. I wouldn't put Nichijou on as background noise, for example, because it makes me WANT to pay attention. But since so much of it is surreal or open ended, it doesn't make me feel dumb for not necessarily understanding every single joke. I can have my own reason for laughing, and that's okay. I can also relate to each of the characters in different ways and form my own ideas about what kind of people they are, as opposed to needing to be shown/explained every detail. I started watching Kaguya-sama: Love is War around the same time, and I liked it for a lot of the same reasons. a LOT of that show is literally just the musings/internal monologue/daydreams of characters who fundamentally misunderstand one another, and often themselves too. It invites you to think about what kind of people they are without outright saying too much.
Out of all anime, I think I have the most mixed feelings for Nichijou. There’s some episodes that make me laugh, but there’s also some that just leave me confused. I agree with most of your points.
Fun fact: When the Nichijou adaptation was first airing, no one outside of Japan understood it (and it didn’t get really popular too) *Hence why it never gotten a second season, since it was very expensive to produce and was actually making Kyoto Animation lose more money* What I’m trying to say is that you’re not the only one that find it unfunny lol I personally love Nichijou, but I respect your opinion too
I know it's very niche and didn't perform well, which is very unfortunate. Even if it wasn't really made for me, I can see how great it is and I wish it succeeded. It's fanbase has grown a lot this last decade, though, which is good to see.
@iDeViL360 Thanks for letting us know, I believed it was a commercial flop because that's just what I was always told. I gotta do my own research on it. Also maybe kyoani didn't go for season 2 since they transitioned away from properties they don't own the rights to in recent years? They also sometimes just don't adapt stuff even if there's ample material. Who knows, it's fun to speculate though
It's a wonderful scene. My brother wasn't a big fan of the show either but he loves that scene. It's stuff like this that makes me feel so conflicted on the show
Nichijou is an abstract show with a surreal absurdist sense of humor. If you are the sort of person that doesn't get those sorts of things then it makes sense you wouldn't like the series. Beneath the surreal humor, Nichijou has hidden depths but that does you little good if you never see past the chaotic facade concealing the deeper meaning. If it just comes across as unfunny and incomprehensible noise then of course you aren't going to enjoy it. Some people's minds are just more anchored in the concrete world. It's the same way some people simply don't get abstract art or conversely how some of those same people might be able to see the beauty in complex mathematical perfection that others can't. For some, no matter how long they look at that Dali painting they will only ever see it as a kind of weird picture of melting clocks. It will hold none of the deeper meaning the work was intended to impart. My guess is the guy who made this video is a concrete sequential thinker. The sort of person who would make a good architect or engineer but a terrible abstract painter or poet. I bet he would dislike the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and FLCL as well.
@@Totaraum Lol, I stand corrected. I hope my comment was offensive. FLCL is a personal fave of mine too, although I'm surprised you loved it while disliking Nichijou. Although my sample group is tiny, consisting of all of like 6 people, my two friends who didn't like FLCL were the same ones who weren't fans of Nichijou. So I guess maybe it's the humor then that's the issue for you more so than how abstract and weird it is? FLCL has some funny moments but I wouldn't call it a comedy, unlike Nichijou. It's also much more action driven.
Great video. I love nichijou, but I can respect that it isn't for you, because you acknowledge a lot of its good points even if they don't quite stick for you. Unfortunately for me, your in-depth analysis explaining these things means I won't be able to share one of your own main points in your Lucky Star with you: "You just don't get it, dumb-a**". Have a good day, I enjoyed the video!
I dunno, man, the whole cultural misunderstanding part brings back some memories. It was around 2003 and I made first steps is the wonderfull world of Silent Hill comunity. The whole then trilogy was heavily sold to me as that David Lynch-style 2Deep4U what-the-hell-is-going-on unsolvable puzzle and stuff. And then I played it, and it's a bunch of very simple and very understandable human stories with some not really important cryptic bullshit thrown in for the flavor. Same thing with Hichijou. I was told about that very Japan-specific humor, went in, and it's a bunch of very relatable everyday stuff about how some dummy has no idea what cofee to order, turned up to 11. With some blink-and-you-miss-it puns here and there for the flavor. Joshiraku it is not. What it is - is one the most insanely high-production anime comedies ever. Maybe even THE most insanely high-production anime comedy. The whole thing is worth watching for the animation alone, the sheer energy of it is unmatched. I love when the quality is the punchline, it's kinda a rarity. It also really wholesome. The good gag-anime of its kind (Asobi Asobase for example) tend to be on a meaner side and it's just nice to see one when everyone is al least likable. Also, Like Love bits.
I never thought I'd hear Nichijou be compared to Silent Hill of all things. As someone who's played through 2 though, I can totally see where you're coming from with the comparison. I do think the incomprehensible humor is a lot more present than the cryptic stuff in the game because that's just fluff. Jokes can't be described as fluff for a comedy show.
I already don’t find most humour in anime funny so Nichijou never really stood a chance for me. I wasn’t able to get through the show unfortunately, maybe I’ll pick it up again one day. For now back to Love is War to make me laugh. Great video man!
Sometimes this show gets me good, many times I really don't get it but I still enjoy watching it however, lucky star is where it's at for me for the reasons you mentioned. The cast really does feel like vessels for comedy and they really only flesh out hakase, the cat and nano, which because of this end up being my favorite and I felt like I was just watching for them. It's got nothing on the big brain meta humor of lucky star, or the cringe of watamote, but it still better than 90 percent of anime I've seen
I haven't watched Nichijou, but I get clips recommended to me pretty often. I tend to find them amusing, but I can't escape the feeling that I *should* find them funnier than I *do.* Mainly I just feel mentally exhausted and overwhelmed. Feels like everything happens at a breakneck pace, and even when there's nothing actually *happening,* there's still so much motion on screen that my brain can't take a moment to process anything.
I totally get that, except in my case instead of feeling exhausted I just feel kind of confused. If anything pondering whether or not I understood the joke eats up all my brain power lol
i definitely wouldn't describe most of the show like that. there are certainly a lot of fast paced memeable moments, but a lot of the show is slower, more dialogue oriented, and there is a lot of "space".
To put it bluntly it’s basically like nichijou but the characters and world building are somewhat better as their not confined in a school anymore. I don’t think any my explanations would do the series justice, I’ll put a video of a guy “better at explaining” this series and be on my merry way ruclips.net/video/Uice77SC6-A/видео.html
can't believe that cop hit an rko outta nowhere also fuck, now it's kinda got me thinking about some other stuff I didn't really adore so much, but which also had some nice moments to them or have some nice positives. great video 10/10 would watch again.
Thanks for telling me rko is what it's called lmao. As for that other thing, if I remember correctly Charlotte has a real good OVA that's set before the story shoots itself in the foot
after yrs of putting it off, i finally watched nichijou last month. i expected it to be pretty directly funny - every content creator who ever recommended it way back when it was first popular made it seem like it was the most comedic anime out there. i laughed (out loud) maybe five times. i binged the whole thing in a week bc i was starting to get tired of it, but if i dropped it i probably wldn't of come back to it. i don't like dropping animes, to this day i've only ever dropped one bc i truly wasn't enjoying it even after trying rly hard to, so i had to persevere. i don't hate nichijou. i don't think it's bad. i genuinely became attached to yuuko n wished the anime focused on her more than anybody else. however... it wasn't the funny montage i thought it was gonna be. finding out that a lot of the humor relied on cultural japanese knowledge made sense - ofc i didn't care much for the comedy. even still, i liked watching the show. i hated a particular character i will not name since it seems like most of the internet disagrees with me, but i still liked watching it. i still liked watching it even, as i said earlier, wanted to drop the show midway. nichijou was not the show i thought it was. but i liked it anyway. i love slice of life, i love silly animes, i love comedies. but nichijou somehow wasn't the right fit. i'm glad i can see somebody's opinion on it that is near to mine. although it seems like u liked it less than me, it's the closest i got. n that makes me feel a little vindicated. all in all, i think u summed it up pretty well at 4:33. nichijou is, in the simplest of terms, loud n insane. didn't make me enjoy it any less, tho!
Glad to hear that we shared similar thoughts on it! I feel like with time we’re both bound to lean more towards a positive or negative view of the show, as that’s usually what happens to me when there’s a series I’m ambiguous about
Nichijou for me is what it would be like if you exaggerated all your heightened emotions/reactions, and physically manifest it. "If you had felt an emotion to a relatable moment and had an impulse, what would it look like?" Example: When Yuuko smacks that stack of wooden discs in the classroom and clunks Mio in the head. The frustration Mio would've felt in that immediate moment of having to put up with someone's carelessness makes you want to retaliate back just for the pleasure of it. Obviously you wouldn't do that IRL if you were a good person, but in the show, the depiction is shown by her immediately retaliating, but exaggerating the intensity by how quickly Yuuko gets knocked out before her stack of discs lands on the table.
interesting thoughts. Guess it is like a series that has speed bumps in terms of quality happens with some series like Gintama. Both can come of as being too esoteric outside japan. It seems to be mixed for you which is fine ofc as some comedy tend to be inconsistent hell gintama(one of my top anime) had some weak episodes/arc with overreliance on japanese celeb jokes and they both use manzai more than nichijou(as manga is cluttered with text boxes meaning more jokes per minute). I mean gintama does 5 minutes of still frame sometimes and joke about that comedy gold for me Overall an enjoyable video that articulated mix feelings clearly.
I am probably even harsher towards this anime than most; It's not that you don't understand Nichijou's jokes, the fact is a lot of jokes in this show are very hit and miss, it is not nearly as funny as people make it out to be, like you said. It's just not funny. Most people judge its humour through youtube videos they saw which highlight the funniest moments, but in the 22 minutes format the episodes often fall flat, some episodes are just full of lame jokes which don't land and I say this as someone who actually enjoys anime's humour in general I would instantly recommend Azumanga Dioh or Non Non Biyori over Nichijou in terms of comedy alone, but even then those two shows also have far more interesting well realized characters, the characters aren't just walking jokes but actual characters and yet are also far funnier. Azumanga Dioh has a lot of puns/cultural specific things in its humour, you will not get every single joke 100% but it is still funny in every episode anyway cuz it's just better written.
I myself liked the bit of Nichijou that I did watch, but it just failed to keep me interested in seeing the next chapter. It is great, but it just doesn't keep me that interested
Ironically, you finding it uninteresting is very interesting to me. To me it felt like the crazy stuff it did was enough to keep me engaged, but my biggest problem was that I just never laughed at any of it.
Im currently watching and before i pressed play i knew exactly what your major issues would be with it. and i gotta say. yeah no i totally agree with you. Ofc that would lead to a less engaging experience overall. im also writing this as i watch. I gotta say, that patreon plug was big dango tier. As for the characters, I am also a big character person, but for me i actually grew attached to a lot of the characters. for the most part. For example my 3 top favorites are hakase, mai and nakamura. however i can 100% see the view point of them having little standing character. as they airnt very deep characters, not by a long shot anyways. You mention the fact the characters feel over the top, which might actually explain why i got attached to them. not only am i a very over the top person, but so is a lot of my friends, so it's why it worked for me. as for the heart felt moments, most of it was anime exclusive. but you hit the nail on the hit with what nichijou means to me, only i laughed. Btw i didnt write a light novel to convince you to like the show, or give it a high rating or change you mind in any way. I wrote this because it gave me a chance to write about how nichijou makes me feel. when i watch it, i feel right at home, even when the humour doesnt make me laugh, the animation is a joy to watch and break down for me. When that doesnt hit right its the music, and when all else fails. i just watch a different freaking show. great video
Thanks for taking the time to write all this, it was a fun read! Personally my favorite characters were Sakamoto, Takasaki, and Izumi. Unfortunately they aren't in the show for most of it, but what can you do
@@Totaraum Regaurdless though, On the character point. its super interesting that i connected both with Nochijou and lucky star. Although i related to lucky star only partially because i could strongly relate to two characters
New Vegas is wonderful, by far the best open world game aside from maybe Elden Ring. Morrowind is a fun time too, but Oblivion is my favorite of the elder scrolls games
@@Totaraum I've played morrowind for a bit over 10 hrs and it's already my fav elder scrolls game. Oblivion is fun but i dont like it as much as i did skyrim or morrowind. It just feels like it hasn't aged as well as the other elder scrolls games, tho i do want to get back into it
@@thecoolestfaisal the gameplay is a weird middle ground between morrowind and Skyrim, but I feel like the writing and quest design is the best in the series. New Vegas blows everything out of the water in that regard, but the gameplay is held together by toothpicks and toilet paper
@@thecoolestfaisal Yeah... it's one of those miracle games like Majora's Mask or Smash Bros Melee that excels tremendously despite the rushed development. Didn't help that they had to use Bethesda's awful engine. With Obsidian and Bethesda both being owned by Microsoft now I've heard rumors that New Vegas 2 is being thrown around
This show I mostly agree with you. I wasn't a fan of it It's a mix of its comedy trying way too hard to be funny, but also having basically zero attachment to the characters makes it so the jokes are even less funny than they already are
Japan hated Nichijou. It is because the logic makes no sense. It is just being crazy for the sake of it. It is still true that Kyoto Animation was asking for too much money when selling the Blu-Rays. Madoka Magica, Steins;Gate, and Hunter x Hunter are popular even during the 2011 earthquake.
i had a fun time watching nichijou but i kind of felt the same. i thought since i really like azumanga daioh i have to feel the same about nichijou. maybe the very reason that i expected to like it made it worse.
I've heard good things about Azumanga, I might have to give it a read/watch some day. Great expectations can and have soiled a lot of experiences in the past, which is unfortunate. I try to be as careful as possible when setting standards before going in, but I usually end up hyping myself up far too much anyways. As for City, I've heard it's essentially Nichijou part 2 so I guess it makes sense that you had the same reaction.
@@Totaraum azumanga is pretty much a weed stoner girl named Ayamu (nicknamed Osaka) and other characters doing lucky star stuff but with way less references and stuff. it was made in 2002 and didn't have exactly the highest budget so a lot of times there is a like 5 second long freeze frame or just some silly animation (like when they do a motion-tween of a single frame of tomo which is meant to represent her falling). theyve also messed up colouring the anime 20 years ago so it really has dull deafened colour tone which in contrast -(that the image lacks)- makes the anime way more confusing and surreal. especially the case with episode 8. not always surreal tho ruclips.net/video/-LhZ5R_ROns/видео.html
I think you should try reading city, it's like nichijou but each character is given their own arcs and the story is more focused. PicotheSpicyWarlord does a good video about City ( ruclips.net/video/Uice77SC6-A/видео.html )

Azumanga Dioh has a lot of puns/cultural specific things in its humour, you will not get every single joke 100% but it is still funny in every episode anyway cuz it's just better written.
I’ve heard of both of those, and azumanga has even been brought up here before. Thanks for the suggestions!
Unfortunately they aren't in the show for most of it, but what can you do
@@Totaraum stuff them in scenes of the reanimate...like most people did
@@chJohnJobs lmao that's smart
@@Totaraum Regaurdless though, On the character point. its super interesting that i connected both with Nochijou and lucky star.
Although i related to lucky star only partially because i could strongly relate to two characters
Wow the video is so well made holy shit
Thanks so much!
Oh damn you love New Vegas. I wanna play it once I've finished playing Morrowind.
@@Totaraum well that is to be expected with a game that was made in only 18 months.
Can't recall the specifics, but I remember thinking that the anime was being carried by its animation
This show I mostly agree with you. I wasn't a fan of it
It's a mix of its comedy trying way too hard to be funny, but also having basically zero attachment to the characters makes it so the jokes are even less funny than they already are
Japan hated Nichijou. It is because the logic makes no sense. It is just being crazy for the sake of it. It is still true that Kyoto Animation was asking for too much money when selling the Blu-Rays. Madoka Magica, Steins;Gate, and Hunter x Hunter are popular even during the 2011 earthquake.
I see Nichijou always in peoples funniest anime ever lists but sometimes wonder if those people even know what the jokes this show tells even are
i had a fun time watching nichijou but i kind of felt the same.
i thought since i really like azumanga daioh i have to feel the same about nichijou.
maybe the very reason that i expected to like it made it worse.
i also read 2 volumes of city and it goes in the same category for me too.
maybe i'll pick it up again in the future who knows.
@@Totaraum azumanga is pretty much a weed stoner girl named Ayamu (nicknamed Osaka) and other characters doing lucky star stuff but with way less references and stuff. it was made in 2002 and didn't have exactly the highest budget so a lot of times there is a like 5 second long freeze frame or just some silly animation (like when they do a motion-tween of a single frame of tomo which is meant to represent her falling). theyve also messed up colouring the anime 20 years ago so it really has dull deafened colour tone which in contrast -(that the image lacks)- makes the anime way more confusing and surreal. especially the case with episode 8. not always surreal tho

I think you should try reading city, it's like nichijou but each character is given their own arcs and the story is more focused. PicotheSpicyWarlord does a good video about City ( ruclips.net/video/Uice77SC6-A/видео.html )
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have to give it a look
