We made the move 3 years ago, quit government jobs and started a homestead. No "regular" jobs now. You have to be willing to do without new cars every 2 years, constant amazon packages pouring in etc. This way of life is truly the best time of our lives.

I'm 25yo and I'd known for years that I didn't want to try to afford a house in the city and especially not in this market but I was ready to have my own place. So a year and a half ago I bought my small rural property in south Mississippi for $2500, cleared a good bit of trees, and started building a 12x20 house. I paid for everything with cash that I'd been slowly saving up and did all the work myself. I'm finally getting close to moving into it permanently and I can't wait. I don't expect to spend over $30k by time I'm done getting everything built and set up how I want it.

If you're retiring don't move out on some secluded property. If you're in a large city and want to get out, just move to a small town that has a hospital and doctors. We live in a town of about 12,000 people. It has a feeling of being safe from crime, a sense of community, and has hospital/healthcare facilities. Only move to "the sticks" if you're young and don't need people.

    Thanks Rob,
I'm an asian and now i'm living near my mom (and dad too), that helps her feel calm. She does not want me to live far away from her. But the problem is, as you say, the price of land here so high and I just can buy 340 square meter and there are a little too much people near me. I really get stuck here and can't move... My mom is old and I think that she's more important to me than just move and buy a bigger land... It's a dilemma...
The only thing I feel is day by day that calling is bigger and bigger but I just can't sell my house and move... My mom is my 1st priority...

I understand your dilemma, and feel your pain! My wife is from Vietnam. We live in a small house on 1 1/2 acres of land. Our town used to be a sleepy, quiet farm town. Perfect, for me. Now, every farm around is being sold and turned into developments, or shopping centers. I used to see maybe 4 or 5 cars a day on our country road. Now, there are hundreds each day! And I get to pick up trash thrown into our yard constantly. My wife thinks it's better than where she came from. I feel like I'm living in hell! She doesn't want to move. She has made Asian friends nearby. I love her, and want her to be happy. Wish I could find an Asian community somewhere out in the country! That's MY dilemma!

The further you go out in the country the cheaper land is. I bought almost 400 acres of mountain farmland in 2018 for $707 an acre. It consists of 3 tracts of my grandparent's estate, and I had to pay full assessed value. Most of the timber hasn't been touched in 90 years. I'd never move to a more populated area.

Let me share my thoughts. When we were young, early 20s back around 1979 we were shopping for off-grid land. Back then you could get 40 acres of off-grid property pretty cheap. We made the decision it wouldn't be fair to raise our future children on a remote property. So we moved to a suburb of Chicago and started our family there.
Today, our kids live on their own farms in Maine and Vermont.
I hope this helps you out.

I'd love to, and looked into it just a few years ago. In my experience, country property is too expensive because everyone knows that people want to flee the cities and even suburbs now - so it's WAY different than it was even twenty or twenty five years ago price wise. The kicker? Here in Ohio the democrats are shipping all the illegals into the rural and even REALLY out of the way VERY rural areas - same think in Pennsylvania, so soon it won't even matter. I looked into buying six acres of totally, TOTALLY undeveloped land, completely off the grid and mostly consumed with woods and foliage other than one small clearing, and it was on a small country road that branched off of a more main (but rural) one with no amenities or utilities at all (I do think they were planning on running electric into the area though). They wanted something like thirty grand for it and it was three hours south of me. My wife's cousin has a beautiful set up on an old farm about 45 minutes east of me here (in Cleveland) and she has close to two hundred acres just outside of a lovely little town, but we've asked her about buying an acre or three and she won't sell any of it. I don't really blame her as she wants to keep it for her kids and grandkids.

Here are my thoughts. Get the entire family involved. Explain the goal. Then work at living as bare bones as you can. Maybe move to a less expensive (but safe) home. Get a cheaper car. Downsize everything you can. Since you are working for the goal of moving to the country, and it's temporary, the hardship isn't as difficult. Watch for Monday's video. We are dealing with rain right now. Hopefully I can make a video Sat or Sun morning and publish it Monday. I will do a step by step video. I've been wanting to do it, just me procrastinating. :)
