- The Kingston Trio (George Grove, Bob Shane, and Roger Gambill) perform a medley of their hits live at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles in 1979. I was one of the producers and head of post-production on this show and also created the photo-montages in front of all the acts. Recorded as a 6-camera live remote directed by Marty Callner and mixed in stereo at Sunwest Recording Studios in Hollywood by award-winning sound guru, Phil Seretti.
Bob Shane just passed away at 85, the last of the original group. RIP.
He was great!
Having been a fan of the trio since high school (late 1960s). When I got to Boston, I HAD to ride on the MTA. Well I got LOST and came to realize that it's more than an amusing tune, but in high probably a true story?
I SAW THE KINGSTON TRIO 1ST TIME AT THE HUNGRY EYE AND I'VE LOVED THEM EVER SINCE...SAW THEM IN 6 STATES AND AT SEA.
NO ONE TODAY WILL TAKE THEIR PLACE!!!
Cool
No One!
Growing up in the 50’s I had every one of their records. Still my favorite group today.
Me too!
Incredible. What an influence they had on my life. Saw the KT live many times. Up among the best live performances I've seen. Great songs, musicianship, & humor.
Oh,yeah!!
Thank you for posting this. I always enjoy seeing New/old footage of my father.
Your pop is a fantastic, generous guy. We had a great time, the night of the show.
how is his health? also am curious since i grew up in southern calif did they ever get any negative feed back from the Mexican community for TJ Jail? and was it actually written about a real life experience of some Sailors? have heard that story for a while. and thank him for my fav song of theirs Desert Pete
Jason - I just posted a song on RUclips that I think is your father performing solo: South Coast. Would love to know if I got that right or if it's Roger Gambill instead. It is a fabulous performance!
Your father is, was and always shall be top notch! 👍👍
May he rest in peace. Met him once. Always my favorite of
the Trio.
It's a shame he passed on at such an early age. He was only 42. But he left a legacy as a member of the greatest band of all time.
Dave Guard-- great singer and banjoist!
Outstanding live 50 years ago, and still gives me a smile.
Oh so gut Boys, macht weiter so, ich liebe euch noch heute....
They were great!
THEIR THREE PART HARMONY IS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Thank you for posting these priceless recordings!!!
Michael, thanks for putting this together. Like your montage at the beginning too. After I got out of college, this is the configuration that Bob Shane had with George Grove and Roger Gambill. What a great group they were. George was the new man and now he has weathered through the times to have 40 years in with the trio. Thanks for hanging in there George. Roger, may he rest in peace, and Bob is still singing with the trio on occasion. Kudos.
Thanks, Charlie. Those montages were tough back then because it was before computers and digital and I had to shoot them on an animation stand frame by frame. Took forever. These guys were a total gas to hang around during the shoot. The most friendly of all the acts in the show. It didn't hurt that I was a big Kingston Trio fan.
Stan Kaess was the bass player for over 20 years. I spent a lot of time with Stan when he was off the road. They toured almost 30 to 35 weeks a year. I married Ruthie, Stan’s widow, and loved her for 32 years until pancreatic cancer took her from us. Stan had two sons Brady and Colby. Two good men I helped raise.
One of the last great KT lineups.
would have loved to have met Roger. wish they had recorded before he passed away
You're right. On banjo:George Grove. On guitar Roger Gambill.Meet them on KT Official Website!
ThanksMichael Part for this new document
The Kingston Single plus two newer members.
They skipped a verse of MTA and Tom Dooley! 😢 Oh well. I LOVE this group! 👍👍
The only one I recognize is Bob Shane in the middle.
+Will Drucker I corrected the write up to include their names: George Grove, Bob Shayne, and Roger Gambill.
MIchael Part a Great iteration of this legendary group!
does Any one know why when the group did Tom Duley they left out one verse. love this clip
I noticed that too. They also skipped a verse in MTA. 😢
Easy to recognize Bob and Roger, but is THAT George on the banjo??? Look at that head of hair!!!
I was thinking the very same thing! 🤣
He was wearing a toupee. Someone told me that during one of their performances that Bob Shane actually pulled off the wig and told him he didn't need that! He never wore it any more after that.
@@alexkennedy6217 Thank you, I was wondering about that.
@rob9641 I can certainly understand his feeling!
Sorry, not the original Kingston Trio....so tribute to the original Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane and Dave Guard..... thanks Dad!!
Do not need false clapping!
I loved the trio, but they slaughter Rev. Mr. Black in this rendition. One of the biggest shortcomings of the trio, even with the ability of George Grove as a musician, is that they never grew musically and then simply rested on their laurels from the 60s.
I loved them in their heyday, but, come on, guys!
Only one of them is original.
These aren't any more the Kingston Trio than Paul McCartney is the Beatles. Playing the original songs doesn't make you the original group.
The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Dave Guard or Nick Reynolds are deceased, as is John Stewart, an early replacement for Guard…the many replacement musicians ARE also the legitimate Kingston Trio, musically and otherwise because they own the rights to the name and the songs…they just are not the original group…what would you expect after 70:years?
@@johnmitchell9180 I expect tranparency and the right to say the truth.
@@David53D Thank You, David. I'm a big Kingston Trio fan but sadly that ended in 1967. Only liked NBD & NBJ, who recorded for Capitol Records.
