      Couldn't get my compost to get hot enough to kill off the seeds. Can't find cow manure that hasn't been already composted. Any suggestions would be great, I also cover the pile with a black tarp to help generate any heat from the sun.

    I have laid cardboard down in my garden for years. My suggestion is to make sure the edges of the cardboard overlap or else weeds will grow through the gaps.

    I’ve been doing this for a couple of years in our back wild garden under our walnut tree. It has literally changed my life. I have found doing a brief soak of the boxes makes labels and tape removal really easy. I throw the boxes in a tote of water for a couple of minutes. I lay out the cardboard and cover it with shredded leaves from our oak tree. In the spring there are no weeds or trees sprouting and I have enriched soil for wild flowers. Next fall I will repeat the process

    You can buy large rolls of brown masking paper and put down a few layers of it if you cannot find enough cardboard. It’s fairly cheap and still breaks down like cardboard.

    I run my cardboard boxes through a shredder (should work fine as long as it is rated for 10+ pages) and get a bunch of small pieces (4mmx12mm) makes it a lot easier to cover the whole area.

    There's no real problem with colored cardboard, but waxy and shiny can be an issue.
    Inks in most countries now are soy-based and don't pose any major concerns.

    I would never get mulch from my recycle center people here in FL use lots of insecticides and herbicides including Round up you will be bringing that into your precious garden. I find large sheets of cardboard at bicycle stores and farmers market. Stuff comes in on pallets that have a layer of cardboard and then the boxes.

  • @zmavrick

    I advocate using cardboard as a weed suppressor and do so myself. However the info about cardboard not being recycled is bad. As a truck driver I hauled bales of cardboard to the paper mills sometimes across the entire country to meet a mills demand. There is a dollar value for each bale so any recycling center throwing it away is basically throwing away money and that would be very poor management.

      No he's absolutely correct at least he is as far as Florida standards go. My best friend is in waste management and he talks about all the time and recycling is a scam nowadays because they charge extra to customers and it all goes into the landfills at the same time..
      And I hear that is the case for many states across the continent. Is this experience of yours may be past tense?

      I don't get a lot of boxes however, I go to Costco and get very large squares for free. They often stack their products, and in-between layers of one product, they lay a strong, large brown sheet of cardboard over the first layer then begin the next stack. Many sheets are about 4'x4'. I'll get as many as I need. Sometimes I'll go to the back where they stack them to bundle for recycling and ask if I can have some (the flats weren't bundled yet). They're always so nice and helpful. I tell them it's for my garden.

      Bales of cardboard from manufacturing and warehouses are baled and still recycled. (Probably the bales you drive)
      The cardboard that many residents put out in their recycling bin every week tends to end up in a landfill or incinerator because it is just too inefficient to have someone sort through it all to get what CAN actually be recycled from what people think is recyclable (greasy pizza boxes, cardboard with the glossy coating, etc)

    Great job with explaining what and how to do it properly. At my old house we lost all of the newly laid turf due to drought and water restrictions in place at the time. Instead of trying to replace it I decided to turn it into a native garden using indigenous local plants. I decided to double the amount of cardboard and sourced local native mulch from an arborist clearing storm damaged trees and got it for free as they had so much. After initial establishment I only had to water my plants once a month and weeding every 3 months and just topped it off annually. At first my neighbours thought I was crazy until they saw the results and slowly started doing the same.

    Some dollar stores will let you take all the broken down cardboard boxes. Be sure you don't put cardboard on too thick because it could hinder air and rain penetration in the soil below. I punch some slits in my cardboard to help with this. Thanks MG for another helpful video!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Месяц назад +10

      If you use enough mulch on top, it should keep the cardboard moist. But this is another reason why I recommend leaving the area around the trunk open and using the cardboard in between.

      Cardboard around my fig tree along with a bit of old potting soil, chopped leaves & grass clippings saved my baby fig tree during the extreme drought last year. It now has cardboard in about a 12ft diameter circle around it. I have to order everything so I have a ton of boxes. I just planted a LOT more fruit trees and I`m adding grass clippings around them first, then soil and leaves on top of that, then cardboard over it to stop grass/weeds from growing around them.

    It also helps (particularly in dry climates) to soak the cardboard in a barrel of water, at least til all the air bubbles exit, but preferably longer, because the material can become rather hydrophobic just like completely dried compost can.

    Sheet mulching is my favorite gardening technique for suppressing weeds, improving soil health, and conserving moisture. I even employ this method when creating new garden beds, choosing to layer a few inches of compost on top of the cardboard to establish my garden rows. For walkways between the rows, I prefer using mulches like straw, woodchips, or grass.

For some reason, despite having a number of cats in the neighborhood, they don’t use my yard as a litter box too often. Do you do bucket planting at all those stacked bucket planters would fit perfectly between your trees and also keep the weeds down too and a lot of the times you can get food grade buckets super cheap or free the frames to hold the buckets you could build with recycled or scrap wood.❤ love the video just wondering?

    Exactly what I do for mine. I get all the boxes from work so it's super easy. 😁 Otherwise unfortunately, yes they do go in the trash. Because here in the KCMO area recycling absolutely doesn't exist. It's pathetic.

    Shreded cardboard mixed with shredded leaves & vermicast (or soaked with vermi slurry/tea) makes an excellect mulch where sheet mulching isn't practical. In some regards, it is superior. I learned this one season when I came up short on shredded leaves & vermicast & had to stretch the materials I had on site.

    I’m very tiny, and took on the horrific task of cleaning my stones around a patio. It was layered over plastic and created roots, worms dirt, etc. I also have a dying maple tree giving off pods and whirlybirds everywhere. I can’t keep up! I’m putting down hardware cloth and sand and replacing the cleaned stones. But, can I put pieces of cardboard under the sand before I put the stones back? I hate cutting the hardware cloth.

  • @aprildegele1510
    @aprildegele1510 Месяц назад +1

    What you said about recycle winding up in the trash is completely true, however, not so much for cardboard. It's usually the plastics. Plastic producers lied to us way back in the 80's and 90's and said it could all be recycled, and it can't ... and they already knew it. Buy as few plastics as you can because what can be recycled in most areas varies. It has to be pristinely clean, or the whole batch gets relegated to the landfill. China is no longer buying our plastics. The US doesn't have the infrastructure to recycle 90% of plastics, so since no one is buying, it's getting trashed.
    #2 plastics, as long as they're not shiny or clear, can be recycled at home with a heat source to 300 degrees (like a panini press), some kind of mold, and a press. At 300 degrees, there is little issue with off-gassing. Check out Brothers Make here on YT. It takes a bit of work, but think bottle caps, laundry detergent containers, medicine containers ...
    However, cardboard is easily recycled as long as where you live has a place that will take it. Can't have grease or schmutz, like pizza boxes, but they can use every Amazon box. Or, as this video suggests, you can reuse it for organic purposes. For gardeners, this is a better use.
    As a matter of fact, fast food restaurants are using recycled cardboard containers for to-go orders. Heck, Keizer Permanente has been using recycled cardboard for urinals, bedpans, and emesis basins for the at least 20 years (I know, because I'm a retired nurse that, as a traveler, worked off and on with KP) .

    I see a fruit tree labeled jujube. Is this an experiment or do you have a liking for its fruit? I have not researched, but notice that Asian visitors to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden rush to pick up fruit that falls from trees. My thought is that it might be beneficial to health. I have a grove of jujubes and find ample water is needed for the fruit to develop properly. Last year's drought meant no fruit!

      Put tulle netting over them. It's light as a feather and they don't like touching it as their little claws will get stuck. It's cheap. Fabric store or Amazon. It's great for birds too, they won't get caught in netting in garden. No animal likes it.

    If you have allergies or mold illness, this can be terrible for you and your neighbors, unfortunately. I saw a study that showed cardboard that was used in the same manner, which affected indoor air quality in homes hundreds of feet away.
