The best guitar tone I've ever heard was Robben Ford with his 335 through his Dumble at Rockpalast 2007. This was only listening on youtube...imagine how it would have sounded live. Do yourself a favor and listen to it. It's tone of the gods.
It will make its job the same as in a tube amp,I've tried several "D clones" both on my DV Mark Jazz 12" (SS very clean very linear does not add or subtract from the tone you feed it) and on a Mesa Express 50 (on clean settings) same stuff with a slight preference toward the SS wich gives you back exactly the tone you dialed in your pedal.
Bloody awesome demo! So clear to see/hear the 3 way bond between Shane, the 335 and the pedal. Also it’s unequivocal how much you’re enjoying it... and that says so much! I have a few Dumbly pedals, but this sounds so so natural and amp like. I’m sold. I’m in.

Man that's the sound right there! Just sounds old skool. I was considering getting a Friedman motor city od pedal but now I will need to reconsider my first choice
Great review video and great playing. Thank you for getting to the point right away. It's annoying to sit through a 30 second channel intro when I just want to hear some gear.
I just bought the Tubesteader SUNKEEPER (Orange amp in a box) and it is truly SUBLIME in every single regard. Worth every single penny! Sounds like THIS ONE is next! :)
I have this pedal. I run it into a Music Man HD 130, set as clean as possible. I am kind of a hi-voltage,tube preamp afficionado and this one I love! It will get that Larry Carlton, Robben Ford type tone easily, through hippie rock 70s stuff no problem. He's got it dialed in almost the same way I do. It's a very bright pedal, so I find the treble's sweet spot is between 10 and 11 o'clock. It will get extremely gainy, but I think it turns to mush, like 60s Cream,Hendrix, about ready to blow up, sound. It's the perfect compliment to my Blackstar HT-Dist (think Michael Shenker) and Friedman Motor City Drive( think hot rodded Plexi). Gain 1:00 to 2:30 max and it purrs. As always, Shane puts it through its paces well. Instead of stars rating, just count the number of times he goes "wheww"
That's a good pedal without a doubt. Good demo too, you hit a range of tones that showed off the pedal in it's best light. Does it match a Dumble, who knows. Does it sound good, you bet.
I'm almost certain 99% of us never plugged into a dumble amplifier. I just went to check out some videos. In every video the amp sounded awesome. So if this pedal could get even close to what I just heard it's well worth the price. But this is a must try first.
There's way more to this pedal than most people realize. Those 12AX7's can be replaced to alter the gain, tone, and response of the pedal. This allows you to dial in the sound a feel that you want that goes far beyond just tweaking the knobs (you shouldn't tweak your knob while playing anyhow.). If you do the math, the potential tonal/response combinations is almost endless. Get this pedal. I want one of these.
Yeah this sounds great! I'd love to see what is does running through an effects look bypassing the preamp of another amp. Like your DSL40cr. If I didn't have a trip out of town coming up I'd be ordering one of these today. I loved the sound. I'd even love to see you run this through a cheap amp like the Joyo Bantamp.
Shane, your playing in really brings out the best qualities of this pedal. The phrasing and tone is excellent. I'm really curious to try it in front of the Two Notes CAB M power-amp sim. Already put my order in for one! Cheers!
Sounds nice, but I am not a fan of playing the thick strings on the neck pup with that OD. Too fuzzy for me. Sounds fantastic with the guitar volume down though. Especially the Strat.
Shane I have a Bandit 65 and the dirty channel sucks but the clean is really good. Another guitarist suggested I run a preamp pedal in the FX return and see what kind of tones I get. I would love to see if this pedal could give some decent tones running it through a solid state FX return.
Robben Ford is probably the classic Dumble ODS player. The reason he loves it is for it's clean sound and dynamics - not for it's crunch / overdriven tones.
Great sounding pedal, especially with the 335. Heard some Clapton 'woman tone' there. It does not come with a power supply. From the website: "As the tube preamp consumes much more current comparing to the regular effect pedals, Beekeeper requires a power supply that is capable to provide at least 400mA. Some pedalboard power supplies are matching these specs (for instance - Voodoo Lab Mondo). If that's your case - you can power up your preamp directly from your pedalboard, thanks to its industry-standard center-negative polarity. Or else, you can add to your order one of the high-quality power supplies offered in our accessories section. "
Wicked matey! I think I've said before that the ODS type tone REALLY suits your playing - best i've heard you! Would love to hear it live and thru the FX loop too...
Fantastic video, I am very excited to get mine in 6 weeks or so. I would, or maybe will, use it in my modified Hot Rod Deluxe III in the efx loop. But I might finish a 1x12" Blues Breaker cabinet with a Tone King inspired power amp with reverb and a Celestion Cream Alnico. Exciting times :-) A thing I could have used, but maybe no other, is a master volume in the bypass mode, because the HRDLX clean channel sounds much better with the volume full up, and a master volume in the efx loop.
This pedal definitely blasts your Oooh records :-)) Seems a bit complicated to me though. I'm staying faithful to my SuperSigna drive from CmatMods: OD, 3 band eq, level and gain, 3 way toggle switch for diode/direct/silicon, Boost switch that you can use for either over/under boost with its dedicated pot. I like it so much I have 2, just in case... ;-)
Gene Ahart cool. Do you use the onboard effects, or do you just prefer an amp sound without effects? I’m just curious because lots of guitarists are basically gear acquisition addicts. I have a dozen or so cheap pedals, and it’s a little like playing with the color settings on your tv: once you start messing with it, you’re never happy...
@@Newnodrogbob I use some of the effects, mostly reverb. I see the amp as an extension of the guitar, in the end I think you are playing both, so I'm ok with that.
I'm curious as to how well it takes pedals. I've found some of these tube driven preamps tend to compress a bit to easily. I would think that with the 12V 500mA power draw, it should have decent headroom but I don't know. I'm also curious as to how it would sound with an FET buffer/boost going directly into the front of it (after whatever boost/ODs you might drive it with), like the later Dumbles use.
Hi Shane. I’d really like to know what you think of the new fender American ultra telecasters. I’m thinking of buying one. Going to America soon and I could pick one up for about €1700. This seems like a good device and priced very fair, and I was very close to order one ... BUT for use in the effectsloop, as I would like to use it, it has no tone controls. In most amps the tone controls are bypassed when you use effects return, so you would need an additional EQ, before or in series with the preamp. It could have been a fantastic option for the Fender Hot Rods, but there you bypass the tone control section and go directly into the reverb circuit and power amp, when using efx return.

Would love to hear this into the BDRI effects loop. This thing sounded amazing! But to be honest with you, the sound you had with the BDRI on its own was incredible too. As for the mid switch, maybe because the BDRI is dark, as is your Tokai, that overrode what we could hear from the mid switch? Especially if the switch pushes the low mids.
Cool, but I wish the 12AX7s had RF shields over them, I'm just saying for my use I'd prefer the addition of some form of RF shielding. Otherwise it sounds pretty awesome.
