I think you did this video exclusively for me. I just used my outdoor vitals pad for the first time and both nights i experienced this phenomena. I did consider both points you brought up. Question though, will the stretch factor occur every time you inflate the pad or will it eventually stretch permanently? Thanks for the discussion.

I usually bleed out some air when I get up in the morning as I have had pads "pop" during the heat of the day while I was away hiking or fishing, I usually the pad off again just before laying down when the air is cooler.

I had experienced this around the early 2000's truck camping in park's when I use to kayak alot and I figured out that over inflation helped a bunch with this, just had to really get the pad aired up tight

In the middle of the last century, as a wet-behind-the-ears boy scout, I was taught by our scout master, who was an air force survival instructor, to blow up my "pad" ((we didn't know any better and called them air mattresses) as soon as our tents were up and top them off at bedtime. He even explained the (albeit crude) science to us. It's funny that someone in the air force would know about the ratio between air density and temperature.

It's true that air mattresses"stretch" over night. But how long is this supposed to go on? My air mattress started out as a Twin size but due to the "stretching" I think it's a Full size now!!. And word of warning to all of you. Don't buy air mattresses at Walmart, unless you only plan to use it a night or two. I have bought 5 in the past 3 months because they are cheap. Every single one became unusable by the third night. The partition ribs running the length of the mattress rip loose causing it to balloon up and no way to sleep on it.

I've noticed when I inflated my pad to what I wanted for ideal pressure right off the bat it definitely seemed to get softer as the nightwent on. When I inflated it to "max" firmness and then air it down before bed it held its level much better throughout the night. Side benefit for me at least, having it extra firm gave it more cushion when I would sit on it when preparing for bed. As a side sleeper I usually have my pad rather soft so my shoulders don't develop any pain over the night.

Yeah and it's a problem with pillows too and they are always too flat at full inflation anyway! At least for those of us who sleep on our side. At home, the mattress allows for your shoulder to sink deep in the mattress so a flat pillow is not nearly as noticeable as when sleeping on a 3in mattress where your shoulder can only sink an inch or so. Talk about waking up with a strained neck...yuck! Thanks for the tips though. Maybe this will help with the pillow.

I kept thinking while listening to you that I've never really had that problem with my uninsulated pad any season...but at the end I listened to your recommendations...and (a fluke) that's what I classically do already! Now my black backpack pillow (?) has intermittently lost air overnight, leaving me a bit baffled.

It'd keep the ground from leaching your body-heat away through the vacuum in the pad. It wouldn't make your pad itself firmer, but you'd sleep a lot warmer & comfier.

One correction. Your title is incorrect. You're not losing air at night. You're experiencing a decrease in pressure caused by a decrease in temperature and an increase in the volume of the container. The mass of the air inside your mattress is constant. If you were in fact losing air, then you'd have a leak. Cheers.

Interesting concept. But it's never been a problem for me. I steep most comfortably when the mattress is more life a waterbed. I'm older than probably most of the OV Tribe. So I get the most comfort when there is so little air that when sitting up my bum is on the ground, but when laying down I float. This also puts much less strain on the mattress materials (lower pressure). I blow mine up more than I'll want; then let a little out as I'm going to sleep. Inadvertently, I'm also solving the air temperature change issue; as it's been sitting since I made camp.

Sorry, with all due respect, PV=nRT. This means the volume change with tempeature for a few degrees is miniscule. For example the ratio from 75 to 55 F is (297 Kelvin -286)/297 or a 4% drop in volume. That's not a flat pad.
Furthermore, the rubber bung is not contracting significantly with temperature. SIlcone used for the plug has a coefficient of thrrmal expasion of 2.5 x 10 -6 K-1, or a10 millionths of its volume for the 10 Kelvin degree drop.
The problem is most likely a leaky seal.
Soaking a silicone plug-in toluene from the hardware store for 7 days will cause it to expand by 130%. Don't soak the female, just the plug itself. Don't do this indoors or near open Flames, toluene is flammable and mildly toxic.
    Better living through chemistry.😂

with a temperature swing larger than 20 the effect is very noticeable. Assuming one has no holes this is the most frequent cause off softness. Usually proven by the fact thatif you top it off at midnight it stays taught for the rest of the night. Otherwise it's usually a hole.

What "of course!" gadget inflates the mattress rather than having to use my (moist) breath, and not add significant weight? Like... maybe... a balloon pump? It makes sense to keep the inside of the mattress dry, thus my desire to use something other than my breath for its inflation.
