My 2012 c63 ticks when it’s cold once in a while too. Usually when the oil level drops a bit. I always check the oil level if I get the tick on a cold startup.
I love the honesty you give in all your videos! It proves there’s good people in the world. Why help us out?? But you do it anyway I love it! Very few of you but I’m glad you have a platform to educate and teach people
Another good video Alex. I think the R63 is one of the lowest production AMGs. Something I always wondered about with them is, it’s built in the United States but the engine is hand built by one man presumably in Affalterbach. I guess they built the engines in Germany and then shipped it to the US to be installed in production line here?
I would add getting yourself a magnet style paint thickness gauge and checking all the panels for uniform paint thickness. Obviously this only works on steel sheet metal but I find if the car's had paint work done or any body filler it will stick out like a sore thumb using this simple and inexpensive tool.
mac stone mein vater hatte einen r320 cdi sooo ein geiles auto ey. In realität ist er viel hübscher als auf bildern. leider hatte er ein problem mit den injektoren. Typischen 320 cdi problem 😭
Definitely the same ticking noise on an SLS when cold ! Happy to hear that it is normal. Funny you publish that video. I was wondering a couple of days ago if Mercedes ever released an R63, I though it would be the ultimate sleeper. I love it.
My ML63 has SLS lifters and still makes the ticking sometimes when it’s cold out. My C63 and SLS don’t, but the SLS used to when we first got it. Had all lifters replaced under warranty!
I remember seeing the black R63 for sale online months ago by the dealer in Chicago. In my opinion, it had a way high asking price considering the mileage. It's pretty cool to see it on your channel and the PPI on it too. Great job!
Great video Alex . Really glad, like a lot of your followers that you are out there giving this form of content. I purchased my 2010 AMG ml63 because I felt more able to identify any issues pre purchase and in the years to come because of your earlier vlogs. Absolutely love it. Keep it up mate. Maybe some 6.2 ltr ml63 content in the future. Thanks again. Craig (Australia)
Awesome video! Thank you. I wish they would bring these back. My E63 just got rear-ended and it was totaled so I just bought an Audi Q7, which is about as close to one of these as I could get. The Audi is so much stiffer than I'm used to, even with air suspension. I also really miss the extra 170 hp!
My mom has always had an r class and I’ve always wanted to drive the AMG! I can’t imagine what it would be like to drive with 500 plus horsepower insane
I bet someone, somewhere in the US has been keeping his R63 locked away in a garage somewhere, with less than 100miles on the odometer lol. Talk about a future collectible
Thanks. You just saved me a bunch of money. I was just looking at a Hyundai Veloster N to buy. Looked in the coolant reservoir and found a nice thick layer of oil floating on top.
You need a paint gauge my friend. Just place it on every panel and it gives the paint thickness instantly. If a panel had been planted it will be much thicker than the rest
The transfer case chain tends to fail on some of these as well as ML and GL (164) around 150-200.000 so it's a good idea to listen for any ticking noise on acceleration.
I have a 2000 S210 E55 estate as we call them here, would love the power of the supercharged car but I like the relative simplicity of mine. At some point I might pull the engine out and replace it with the later one and bolt a turbo onto it to see what happens but I have to finish my boat first!
My 2013 C63 with M156 ticks for loud 3-5 mins and quiets down, it’s usually when the car has been sitting few several weeks without being started. I try to start once a month during storage months and let the oil circulate for a few mins so everything stay nice a lubed up.
Alex, the coolant color seems to be green. This car should have clear/orange or blue coolant. On my recent w209 CLK purchase, I had this happen to me, someone filled in green "walmart" coolant and babied the car around town for several years. The coolant started boiling at exactly 212F and blew the coolant hose off the radiator, killing both. This also will corrode the cooling internals.
I ran into one when I was on vacation in California for Christmas. The only one that I have ever seen. I know how little of them are in the US, so I was shocked to see it
The ticking is just how MKV GTIs sound lol, got one at auction that everyone was terrified of...because they don't know that's just how they idle. 20k miles later, I won that bet.
Great video Alex! Sounds like we are all getting over colds, kids bring home horrible stuff from daycare. I love the R-class, I think the styling is fine it’s just that they are typically a boring color (blue with tan interiors etc) and V6. Just finding a nice black R500 is rare in itself. Two more problem areas on R-class, 06+ ML class and 07+ GL class are the audio amplifier sitting in three inches of water under the drivers seat, and the rear SAMs fail due to water intrusion as well.
Mercedes have made many good vehicles this is one of them but your pre inspection is excellent things that I would not of looked for but will look in the future for for my next car
We have excellent luck clearing up intermittent lifter tick by adding Seafoam to the oil. I have found adding a full can, driving 500-1000 miles of spirited driving, then a fresh oil change will almost always fix that issue. If you are going to leave the Seafoam in for an extended period I recommend no more than half a can.
A Mechanic,s stethoscope is also a good tool, in regards to ticking sounds that go away with temp Many owners manuals will actually mention them as normal so the Dealer doesn't have to.
Hi I just got a 2004 C320 4matic and the left bank sounds like a stuck lifter changed all the lifters and found do to pore maintenance the cam was bad put a new MB cam and it still sounds the same any ideas? thanks love you Chanel take care.
They most likely made the 30 R63’s in the USA. United States: Vance, Alabama (2005-2013; Mercedes-Benz U.S. International) Mishawaka, Indiana (2014-present; AM General)
I have a c55 with the m113 and I have almost an identical noise apron startup, then it goes away by halfway to opp temp. The car has 75000 miles and has had this noise for a long time it hasn’t gotten better or worse. Do you think it would be something lifter related? Seems that it is in my research but I haven’t had it looked at, or maybe something like a cam shaft adjuster idk if they have them like the 63 cars, only happens on passenger side bank of cylinders. Any advice or ideas much appreciated man! Love the vids. Cheers from southern IL!
so many people underestimate the car and judge it by its looks. people who didn’t or don’t own an r class don’t know how awesome it is to have a R class. this car is perfekt for family’s😁 also awesome video as everytime 👌🏻👌🏻
I have a 2008 e63 which has the exact same sound first 60 seconds after a cold start. However, thanks to your videos (and hoovies), everytime I drive it I feel like driving a ticking timebomb which can explode anytime soon 😁
I have that M 156 engine and trust me I will swear by this product, put liquid Molly additive in the oil for the lifters and it’s a great preventative maintenance to never have problems with any lifters or camshafts
I have 2007-08 obviously I bought it used and I had this car for more than 6 years. I do performed all the maintenance on this car. I was wondering if there is a way to see the headbolts using a small camera from the oil cap without removing the valve covers. Any help would be appreciated. Ty!
Just traded our R350 in at the dealer. The guy that does appraisals immediately came out thinking it was an R63... came back inside saying he got his hopes up 😂
The R63 AMG is a unicorn!
This is a pretty cool family vehicle!
I found redline oil to stop that tick, their 5w40 is MB approved and sticks to the cams very well
I run it in both my S65”s and an E63
the rims on the black one are gorgeous
Rims from the ML63 I believe.
nah, they scream "pimp my ride"
ElijahEls V They look more like decent reps to me, but definitely that style
@@SamAbraham You might be right. Either way, I like the look!
ElijahEls Agreed
"Check your rearview mirror for smoke." And cops too! Lol

Thanks Peter!!
@@LegitStreetCars Almost there now!
Props to whoever's detailed this, looks amazing.
My 2012 c63 ticks when it’s cold once in a while too. Usually when the oil level drops a bit. I always check the oil level if I get the tick on a cold startup.
Every benz I've had / owned had a lifter tick on cold start / cold weather once the mileage gets up there, perfectly normal on MB's IMO.
I love the honesty you give in all your videos! It proves there’s good people in the world. Why help us out?? But you do it anyway I love it! Very few of you but I’m glad you have a platform to educate and teach people
This is the best softball dad car. It's as close to a hellcat pacifica as you can get.
LOL. Hellcat Pacifica. Perfect description.👍👍
More like Pacifica SRT8. Little shy on power for hellcat.
The R63 has to be one of the coolest vans ever made!
Sorry they are so unreliable worse than most MB,s You could spend more than the car is worth because it is so poorly made. Chrysler Pacifica quality
The E55 wagon my be the best daily ever. Special and blends in just enough so your left alone. A close second would be the S55 for me.
E wagons are my fave
CLS63 shooting brake

Actually more of a 4-door wagon, vs a minivan. Beautiful car!!

pushing it to it's max, during test drive, sounds like a thing to do in Germany

I bet someone, somewhere in the US has been keeping his R63 locked away in a garage somewhere, with less than 100miles on the odometer lol. Talk about a future collectible
You mentioned it briefly. What extended warranty company would you recommend?
None, most of them are a joke. But carmax is the best from what I’ve seen but expensive
Could you do a PPI series on many of last few generation of AMG models? This one was great but not really looking to get into R63 lol.
A video by “The BMW Doctor” shows a procedure to stop the ticking (engine ticking free fix). Wonder if you have seen it or think it’s a good idea.
Bern Boomboom revv the engine @3k for about 3-5 minutes did not quiet the ticking
I don’t recommend taking all of his stuff verbatim
I love the R-Class!
It is just practical, spacious, and comfortable.
All this while being classy, with excellent build quality, and good performer.
28:45 You are the first person I've ever heard call Skokie roads smooth. Tell that to the alignment on my Civic.

Very important to check in valve cover thru oil cap to estimate frequency of oil changes. Can vastly determine engine life expectancy.
the whole production was 322 units, 238 LWB and 84 SWB.
I have a mint low mileage SWB :)
Great Video ! That Is The Absolute Best Way To Inspect A Used Car .That Mini Camera Going Behind The Q.Panel Was Awsome !

good information on pre-purchase inspection
Great video! I now have a better understanding of what to look for when purchasing a used Mercedes. I look foward to your next video! 😁
Does the dealer provide you with the VMI if you just ask the service manager for it? Or will they grumble and groan
Just really depends who you get
I have a diesel R320 and love it. This is all awesome advice - Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
+1 me too
Thanks for the info! I like these, but the years before the facelift look weird, AMG makes it cool though!
I really want to get a hold of a linarut blue E55 W210 and this R63 is awesome!
I also have owned this car with the 5.0 v8. it is a very luxurious, powerful, rare car to have and it make it very uniqe to drive with it.
If you could only have one AMG, what would it be? I'm going with E55 Wagon!

My friend. My best to the family.
My Aunt has a r63 and I love it
I saw somewhere that only 200 of these were built or in the US i don't remember
Service history is king and guides a PPI to the important areas to go deep.
I was looking at your odd-looking Pontiac, it looks like a concept to the Knight Rider 2000 for the movie from 1991
Alex, the coolant color seems to be green.
What are your rankings for the extended warranties available?
Question for ya. My 09 ml63, got the ticking noise and a chirpy noise, what is the cause of that? Thank you and great job, love your videos

It’s not a Mercedes but what do you think of the Buick Regal England it is the Vauxhall insignia just asking thank you very much great show as ever
That is a cramped engine bay! Haha love these r63s though, cool video Alex. I think I’ll stick with the ML55 for my minivan’ish duties for now 🤙

If it’s AMG hell yes
As much as you say top speed as a joke it is actually really important. It's a good way to check if the engine is running healthy
i love the way the rims look on the black one

Whats the style of amg wheels on that r63? Are they staggered?
Love those looks the old A class and B class and don't forget the R class.
What are some good extended mileage warranties? I have an '03 BMW E39 M-Sport
On that black r63 first right front tire is put on the rim opposite direction?
Where i live, these cars are used as a hearse because of the length. You can really stretch your legs on your last journey! But as a R320 cdi...
Could you do a video on a r320 cdi with the om642 lump would be interesting to see what you think of this engine
On the VMI, why do you want a thick one? Wouldn't that mean a lot of things went wrong on the vehicle and were fixed under warranty?
Yep
They most likely made the 30 R63’s in the USA.

I like to schmoke a joint while I'm checking the CV joints.

How do you get a VMI on a private party sale..prior to purchase
If the steering wheel wobbles when you brake it could be track rod ends not just worn discs (rotors)
Thanks Alex! Your videos are truly helpful. Greetings from Finland 👍
