Today is 13th of June 2020, it is also the eight day of the Indian calendar month Jyeshta. On this tithi is my birthday, today I am completing 80 years of my life. According to the Indian tradition, the birthday is to be celebrated on the date of the Indian calendar month.Thus when you celebrate the birthday according to the tithi-day in Indian calendar, you get the benefit of the effects in the atmosphere on that day. We receive more effects of the atmosphere around us through the field effects of the astronomical objects. And when we obtain the universal positive energy, we receive the benefits and the person lives, longer and healthier.
The blessings given are ‘jeeveta sharada shatam’- literal meaning is may you live to see hundred autumns. The import is that in the sharad season, the health is at its optimum, thus it is for taking this advantage, that this blessing is given.
Nowadays, what is the trend?, that the date birthday is only celebrated and that too, for example if the birthday is on the 28th, they stay awake waiting on 27th night to wish at midnight as the date changes to 28th. First of all the date has not much connection and that too to start at midnight! The Indian calendar date, tithi, is based on the shape of the moon and the energy given by the sun. Now, how will time keep the record of the date and that too of 27th midnight. Then they cut the cake at midnight or on the birthday, that is ok, to cut the cake, cause if the sweet is big then it needs to be divided and shared. But what they do is keep candles on it and if the person is becoming 80 years old, then 80 or 81 candles are lit. And these candles are synthetic, they are not made from bee wax and when such candles are kept on the cake, they melt on the cake. Then they are removed and the cake with the synthetic wax on it is eaten. How does this feel right? Everyone stays awake and awaits for 12 o clock at night , they sing ‘Happy Birthday ‘ song and blow off the candles. Now when you blow off, the smoke of the carbon dioxide is released, is this good? The person who is blowing has pushed out all the energy and when this smoke is there with the inhalation all will enter inside, this one should never do. The light has to be lit, not extinguished.
Our inner light, has to be brightened, into luminance- bright light and for this the lamp is very important. This fire is the bestower of laxmi-prosperity and wealth, all types of riches. The sun also gives us health, it is also a type of fire, do we put it off, off course not. So when the morning of the tithi birthday dawns, we shall be well, be in a pleasant mood, the clothes maybe any type, they need to be washed and clean. Thus we shall wear nice clothes, and then meet friends relative who come to wish, have lunch together, where sweets and savouries are prepared, it is a joyful day. Sometimes what happens is that exactly on that day, there is so much work in the office, there is no problem. In the morning after this arati is performed, and pooja is done, you can go to your office or else after coming back in the evening , this can be done.
So what do we do? Before food, a traditional science is mentioned. Markandeya Rishi, has given this blessing , that you may take little milk, add a little of the sesame seeds and together add a little jaggery, mix all the ingredients well and say the verse.Now drink this mixture. It is all scientific as there is milk, jaggery and sesame seeds in this formula. All these have capacity to nourish all the cells, increase immunity and strength. Our seers have told to drink this mixture after chanting this mantra.
After this Aukshan or Aarti is to be done. Aarti is done like this, left…right…and a complete circle. Means clockwise and anti clockwise as till the time string is not pulled from both the sides, the rod will not rotate. Chakra (cycle) should continue to rotate, life cycle should continue.
So, in Aarti, when fire is moved left - right, it stimulates the entire hormonal system, increases consciousness, strength and also increases trust.
A woman from the family like the mother or wife or sister can do the aukshan. If there is no woman, brother can also perform it but generally it is done by woman. If there are more women, they can touch each other and perform Aukshan together. In this way, the day of birthday is spent with all loved ones and in peace. We generally give a gift to the person having birthday but according to me, person having birthday should give gifts to others. If every guest gets a gift, Birthday will have some meaning as donation or giving is considered to have an important place in our lives.
Donation doesn’t have to be very big, a small gift can also be given.
