+Lord_Vader. Step 6. Don't try to go full gain on your boss metal zone, scooping the mids while using your emg's on your line 6 spider. get a proper tone.

It's gonna make your music ten times better. Lead guitar is just a cherry on top of a cake. I would much rather listen to a catchy track with no lead than a shit song with some cool solo tricks.
I've definitely seen lots of guitarists like the guy in the clip. Not terrible players, but FUCKING terrible tone. Like, what the hell are THEY hearing, because I'm hearing a metric tonne of angry mosquitoes in a tin can......
I've had arguments with people about certain bands that they think are good because the guitar players can play super fast. People need to learn the difference between technical skill and good writing. Constant noodling on a guitar is the musical equivalent to a movie with non stop action but no story or development. You need a good foundation to work on and restraint to avoid fatiguing the audience.
+Electrohead92 it became even more anoying when those people start yelling about bands like hatebreed, for example, are bads because they don't have a lot of shreds solos (I know that hatebreed isn't metal exclusive, but let's take the "true metal" aside for a while) PD: sorry, English it's not my native language
+Electrohead92 That is why I gravitate so firmly towards doom metal. When 99% of your material is played so slowly that people feel the space between chords, every bum note or missed beat sticks out like a sore thumb. Shredders just figure “eh, so I messed up that note, and that note, and that note, and that note… there’s hundreds more of them, who is going to care?”.
It takes only 1 guitarist to tell the drummer to go buy a light bulb, tell the bassist to take out the old light bulb and tell the singer to screw in the new one :)
Roll back your gain and you will have a tighter sound and you can make up for the lost gain with your volume and volume will help saturate your distorted sound.
+Dion R Usually a bit of scooping helps with giving your tone more bite, just don't go full Dimebag because unless you're able to control that extremely specific tone, it'll sound like dogshit.
+Michael Wiznuk that is where my gain sits and then volume will give you saturation, I wish more people knew that "less is more" especially for recording purposes.

I causally teach guitar to children normally aged 6-14, and today I had a kid come in who I believe had ADHD. The kid was about 8 and had apparently had the guitar for over a year, but the parents hadn't yet bother to get him lessons. The kid's favorite thing to do on the guitar was bash on the strings and strum in circular and squiggle patterns, when I asked him about using his left hand and fret-board he said "He does really use that, very much". I tried to get him to play one string and put his fingers on the frets, but he would try it a few times, and then go back to bashing on the strings. I tell this story this story, because the shred-wanker in this video is no better then the ADHD string basher I meet today; Making nothing but noise that only they can understand and whenever they try anything on substance, they quickly retreat to the only thing they know. I hope that one day the "shred-wanker" learns something musical and applies it to his playing, perhaps a scale, a chord or two, or maybe even relative pitch so he can tune his guitar. As for my "enthusiastic new student", I both dread and look forward to seeing him next week, and who knows I might even be able to make a musician out of him.
+DYLZAL Children also respond differently to different teaching methods. I might suggest getting him to tell you a favourite song, then teaching him the chords and progressions of that song. You would be amazed how well people respond to learning what songs they feel awed by consist of. To this day, I still long for the high I felt when I successfully played along with Gather Me Up Forever. (Look it up, the opening bass solo and the song itself is a masterclass in the difference between writing to create a feeling in your listener and merely writing riffs.)
+DYLZAL we all were wankers when we starts something .that shred wanker might one day learn how to actually make music but to get to that level of shredding, one really need to be an empty wanker at the beginning
How can one learn relative pitch? I've never been able to tune a guitar by ear, I thought it was like colour blindness, you can either hear these things and tune by ear, or you can't. If you have any methods that I could use to practice this, I'd be very grateful. Cheers.
+Lord Baktor oh yeah his ego is so big that one time in 90's the bass player got to shine a little bit on stage and that infuriated yngwie to the point that he fired him after the show. just wow. never work with toxic people even if they are talented
I had a band about eight years ago, and there was a guitar player exactly like this! He never played anything without messing it up and had the same setup except he had some noname Chinese combo instead of a Line 6.
Wow, I wish I could record at your studio, if I had the money I totally would. Not just because of you intelligent knowledge of how to record, but because of your awesome belief in what music should be, keep it up bro!
Watching something like Joan Jett's band... it's perfect.all the parts come together without becoming utter mush, no one is overplaying, it's tight and it rocks. It's fun to listen to.
I've been playing guitar for a little over 12 years now, and I just want to say that I've been waiting for a video like this. I often question my technique and song writing abilities, but watching this gives me comfort knowing that I'm taking the right approach. Like you said, show restraint when necessary and shred when appropriate. I'll be sure to remember that.
@@sourpatchkid20 I can't stand the shape of a warlock. Literally the most uncomfortable guitar I've ever played besides any flying V. I would try getting your SG set up. Playability can be changed on ANY guitar. Through a setup, a 200 dollar guitar can play like a 2000 dollar guitar.
Shredding is more about theory and using scales properly, not just messy fucking notes everywhere. Zakk Wydle is a good example of shredding properly using proper theory and scales
Precisely, most shredders in my area have no fucking clue what restraint is. Call me crazy, but most people don't remember a solo as much as a great riff.
My girlfriend wen't to a Zakk Wylde show at a festival, and the dude did egodouche-filled mindless wanking for HALF A FUCKING HOUR. Half the crowd left for beer and food after five minutes because they were bored. He's technical and dedicated, but is the archetypical guitarist diva that only cares about showing off.
@@NuclearHeadshot if it was with Ozzy then I understand why.. because Ozzy needs to get off stage and breathe. In the meanwhile Zakk and the drummer play their solos.
I've got adblock but I leave it open on RUclips cause I'm a big fan of alot of guys who make their money off of monetization. It's a useless bitch, but I'm bitching all the same. It seems like less and less, you get that SKIP AD IN 5 SECONDS" option.
It's funny because most of Kirks solos in Death Magnetic sounds exactly like this guy. Don't get me wrong, I'm huge Metallica fan, but truth must be spoken.
Kirk has an interesting writing style , and he definitely has his off days. But I have to disagree with with you there. Death Magnetic was a huge comeback from st anger and the load days, and like someone else said, it took me a while to get in to it. But there isn’t one bad song on Death Magnetic. Kirk and James especially went back to theirs roots on that one , and Robert was an awesome addition. I think some of Kirk’s best solos are on Death Magnetic, but they all came off the top of his head.
+Ian Alderman I was surprised I said it first is what I meant and honestly I would rather listen to "The Sex Kittens" than hear anyone jack off a guitar.
+followfornothing I definitely pick up what you're putting down, I'd definitely rather listen to The Sex Kittens than incessant wankery any day, by Crom's sweaty balls! lol
Shredding, as in actually playing fast well (in key, precisely, being able to mute etc), has nothing to do with that guy in the video though. And I kinda feel like the video was really a joke to begin with. Then again, yeah there's a lot of players who truly just suck completely.
Nice video once again Glenn and greetings from Finland! I've always said the same thing to all my band mates in every single band I've ever been a part of: the song is king! Everything revolves around it and all the instruments should respect it. So, no unnecessary soloing of any kind - ever. Same goes for all the instruments in the band. And this is coming from a guitarist of a blues/rock background so.. Keep up the good work!
Glenn, love your videos ❤️ Just a note, James Hetfield didn't miss the footswitch. His guitar just had a bad connection which was revealed in a later interview, which is why he kept rocking the pickup selector as that works sometimes (which it did). Anyways, thanks for your awesome videos \m/
The one thing I always told my guitarist who falls into the problem guitarist you're describing: "one band, one sound. if you sound bad, we all sound bad." this line of thinking can save a band.
So true. I had a guitarist friend back in college who hated putting guitar solos in original music...because he thought they were just for showing off. I had to persuade him that you can do a guitar solo well, if you treat it like any other part of a song and plan it out (fully written out, or just length and rhythm structure) to focus on what's actually going to sound good--pleasant melodies, good harmonies and rhythms to support it. Once he saw that was a possibility he wrote some great stuff. And his technique improved, too, because he was challenging himself more.
Hear hear! Couldn't agree more Glenn. Laughed a lot at this one, keep up the good work! Better to have simple well written structured songs and if people are walking out the door singing a line, humming a melody or simply banging their head to your riffs. Job done!
THANK YOU!!! I've been saying this for years! I have been in bands where there have been 2 lead guitarists (myself always being one). I get so tired of the toe stepping and having to back off my parts because the other one wants to do a longer "look at me" lead rather than tastefully do their part. I, personally, don't like to do leads that take too long. I've always preferred to get my musical message across and move on. Even when Slash does a lead, it's tastefully done as well. Have fun with it, but do it tastefully. Sound redundant? There's a reason. I've said it over and over and over and over and it's like GLENN talking to a bass player.
as a guitar player in a past band, I had to take all the responsibility and get people motivated. They didnt do any of the homework/work to make things happen. In the end though, I ended up leaving and things immediately began to fall apart with them and it crashed in a weeks time. So not necessarily true most of my experiences was where the work load was between 1-2 people.
Personally, Yngwie caught me with his fast playing and encouraged me to do really fast sweeps and alternate picking, and sure now i can do all of his material (of course not exactly like him), but i always, ALWAYS, in my band do slow, interesting licks. The crowd is much more impressed and the listeners will be much more impressed by a solo that gives feeling and mood rather than semen stains of when the guitarist played with himself too much. It's like Marty Friedman said, you'll be impressed and want to do something because you can't do it, but once you mastered it, it won't sound impressive anymore. A good lick beats Yngwie's phrygian mode runs any day.
+ozthesoundchaser Here's a how to record keyboards: 1) Plug it into your line in and get the keyboardist to play on it (in case of synths) or connect the midi controller to your PC and play on it (in case of software synths). 2) Apply EQ if needed. 3) Done! Pianos are a bit trickier, they require a good soundproofed room and two large diaphragm mics, an additional kick mic helps on the bass strings. Midi profiling sounds very lifeless in my option due to the lack of small imperfections and velocity input.
Anyone else watching this channel to get some inspiration? I am Glenn has a lot of good points that have actually helped me come a long way with my music. Keep being awesome Glenn
I think that the ex lead guitarist in my could have been the worst guitarists I've ever encountered. He wasn't a bad guitar player but, he wasn't great. Despite this fact he still acted like he was the biggest fucking rock star ever. He would refuse to work on songs we wrote and never wrote any, when we did covers he wouldn't learn the parts. On top of that his tone was awful. No matter what we played he used a line6 spider on "insane" mode. Classic Rock? INSANE MODE! Alternative rock? INSANE MODE! Pop Punk? INSANE MODE! Not only was it on insane mode he also had the knobs on his amps set as such, Bass:8 Treble:6 Mids:0. And on top of that he was also increadibly racist, at one point he called our bass player the N word for messing up on one part he could barely play the song. Thankfully he's out of the band and our new guitarist has a decent tone, can play his parts and isn't a racist asshole.
i enjoyed this video , in my early years i was lead guitar player by default where everyone expected me to cover for there lack of talent , it got to where i was bored , at the time i couldn't be choosy i love bands like pantera where you have solid players and it sounds natural and organic and the solos add to the song not overshadow it
When he got to the "don't micromanage" bit, I laughed out loud. As a guitarist I have to constantly work on that bit because I am SO bad at that and I try to shove my nose into everything.
I love the part about the guitar serving the song instead of the song being an excuse for an extended solo. I once read an interview with Eric Clapton where he said the same thing.
Hey Glen. So my band just recorded a song, and I wanted to see if you approved of our method. 1: We used GarageBand 2: We recorded into audacity then put the tracks into GarageBand to put effects on. 3: The bass is actually just a guitar that we transposed down an octave in the mix. The song will be on Bandcamp in the coming weeks. Please put this in York next comments vid, I love SMG videos, keep up the good work.
Gold mate, after watching my lead guitarist record his solo in around 20 parts then glue it together, take it home and learn it, I got a big kick out of your vids. It's not always the bass player that is clueless but it mostly is. Oh and did I mention the time a guitarist changes his pick ups halfway through a recording. Lucky the Engineer was a good mate. Amazes me the things that just don't occur to some people. Plus a tip to LEAD guitarists, if ya gunna play rhythm on the recording Practise that as well, it'll save me having to grab your guitar after the 10th failure and do it for you. Can't imagine how it feels to have the blind drunk rhythm/vocalist play your rhythm part better then you.
SpectreSoundStudios It's called interference. You complain one second about guitar noodling and self-indulgence (blowing your guitar load everywhere) and follow it up with "... and that's why I've never gone to an Yngwie concert".
Glenn, thank you so much for this video. I really enjoyed this video (and stumbled upon some points of improvement myself.) and that last quote hits the nail right on the head. I hate it when guitarplayers just bluntly barf out solos through everything and play fast without any dynamic riffs. Although ofcourse, I recognise myself in some of your remarks in this video (which I will work on improving in the near future), I found this video to be very entertaining and marvelousely helpful. Thanks dude! Cheers!
I think the guy in the clip simply cannot hear music. You would be surprised how many people who think they can sing cannot sing, and think they can play cannot play - like, at ALL! Most of us have a rough idea of how close we are to sounding like we want to sound, but a few hear something entirely different when they listen to music. Their brains just cannot process the harmonic and rhythmic relationships that the rest of us take for granted. That's how you get those disasters that turn up on the X Factor - they really don't k now why everyone is laughing at them. They cannot hear it.
musicalisten1 Yeah, my daughter has a friend who is like that. She clearly cannot distinguish notes or harmony. Her pitching is approximate in the extreme, merely being up or down relative to the last note! And she thinks she is great! Imagine a family where that gene is prevalent, and you have the perfect X Factor cringe moment, where all the relatives say how wonderful wee Britney is and then she turns out to be terrible.
That's the problem , where a family wants to see their child happy so they nod along and say she or he sings great , but not really understanding basic tuning or music , and they relie too much on the families point of view that they dont pursue better training or vocal training .
Great video, I'm a rhythm guitarist (well and lead as of right now) in my band and there is hardly ever a moment that i am not practicing my parts when I'm playing guitar, i hate seeing other bands that perform and obviously they haven't got any tightness to there playing, which makes it just sound like noise. BTW Love the videos Glenn
Speaking as a bassist who played in a hobby band decades ago and would love to take it up again one day, I have to say I am grateful not only to know that Glenn recognises one of the biggest problems with guitar players, but to have heard examples of when guitar players back off a notch and it benefits the entire band. Faith No More is an obvious example, but also pretty much any good record by My DyING BRIDE exemplifies this fact. On Turn Loose The Swans, the first real song begins with a pair of guitars doing a very simple little noodling through a delay pedal for a minute and change. No shredding, no wah-ing, just a series of tap-ons, pull-offs, and a slight delay effect. Then when the rest of the band (including a violinist who grabs one by the balls and twists with abandon) comes in, it all has so much impact because everybody in the band pulls the right note at the right time for the right result. The difference between the My DyING BRIDE that recorded between 1991 and 1995 then 1999 and 2002 and the wanker guitar players in this video is that MDB thought through the entirety of the song. Every note is calculated to create a mood. The guitarists in this video seem to think a song is just something to give them a chance to solo. The difference this makes… well...
Spot on! I learned along time ago "less is more" also to make my solo's as melodic and to the point , I treat my solo's like adding frosting to the cake , to much and it becomes a sugary mess and you can not taste the flavor of the cake, just enough and you have a perfect balance.
Tyler Wolfguard yeah what would happen if he heard primus, his preconceived notions will be destroy to where he does what the people in bird box do, or his brain just explodes one of the two
Nah, he's just tired of crappy "bassists" who just picked up the instrument last week and couldn't care less. There's a ton of that type of "bassist" out there.
@@antinomine3754 Well I'm not that kind of bassist, I try to put some effort into getting better at bass. In case you're wondering I don't have any videos of me playing because I'm not good enough yet, but one day when I learn enough stuff I'll start trying to get out there.
You are one thick dumb fucking rock, did you know that? >who is Victor Wooten? >who is Jimmy Aslip? >who is Rufus Philpot? >who is Evan Brewer? >who is Mark King? >who is Alex Webster? Music is the language of frequencies, harmonies and rhythm. Just like the alphabet, music has a base behind it and it's called music Theory Just like you learn to speak before learning what makes up speaking in the first place, learning theory can GREATLY improve your global view about the subject That is to say if you are not a lazy ass Bass guitar is one of the most underrated and ridiculed instrument because most people don't know JACK FUCKING SHIT about music Pro tip: musician speaking, not guitarist, not drummer, not occasional piano noodler, not occasional bassist... A damn musician
You really didn't expect back then that in 2023, guitar players would be sucking in completely different ways. Bad songwriting, riff salads, over concerned about wood, pickups, tubes, Gibson, etc instead of spending time practicing their instruments haha. Your videos always have been sensible and had all the evidence for your words and it would be awesome to see a part 2 or redo of this video in terms of present context. As a vocalist(clean singer) myself, been a fan of your channel since 2016. Keep up the great work.
Yngwie had some high points, like the 2 Rising Force albums where he was forced to work with a producer. Glenn - you got to review his new CD, he sings on it, I just can't wait to see your review of that!
Glenn please do a video scolding guitarists for scooping their mids. by god, it has destroyed the tone of many skilled bands purely because their guitarist is too fucking stupid to realise that he is throwing away his bands potential future by making them sound like a wasp in a bottle because "its the sound I'm after, I won't sound as heavy with mids dialed in" YOU WONT SOUND LIKE ANYTHING AT ALL IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR MIDS DIALED IN, IT'LL BE JUST LIKE LISTENING TO WHITE NOISE.
Would be an interesting subject but a lot of metal sounds good with some mids scooped and not every band needs to have in your face cardboard mids. Amp EQs usually don't really do much of anything anyway. Can turn the knobs all day long and you still have much more control in post production than you do with the amp.
Hell yeah. I was explaining this concept to my lead singer/rhythm guitarist when I kept a fairly simple mid tempo solo for one of our songs. He was asking me why I didn't do some of the fast scale runs I do when we're just screwing around, and I basically said the song doesn't need it.
Glenn. Much respect, but..... let's not spend 3 minutes of a how-to video bashing one kid on RUclips, and then another good portion rambling about other bands. In my opinion, this was a very poorly done how to.
Once saw a guy rent a 5150 for a small club gig just to forget to turn the gain on and play an entire death metal set on clean, including sweep solos... I wish I was making this up On a happier note, great video Glenn, a lot of guitarists in this world need to see this one...
you're t-shirt is so cool. I fell in love with that spaceship the day I saw Battlestar Galactica pilot for the first time. It reminds me the X Wing, like som kind of a tribute.
Hey Man. I appreciate the commentary. I was just at a local music store a couple of days ago and some wanker was just wailing away non-stop playing as fast as he could..... for like 20 minutes. I turned to the guy who was with me and said "now if he could just play one note that had any feeling, I would be impressed." Too many guitar players-particularly young players-confuse technical ability with musicianship. David Gilmour can play one note and move an audience because he is bearing his soul through his instrument. Technical ability is like the language of music and just uttering words fast does not, by itself, tell an interesting story.
Metronome Vs. No Metronome video? You always say stuff about how not playing to a metronome makes the take sound bad, so I think that would make a nice video to get the point across. Thanks Glenn. Greeting From Wichita, KS.

+DYLZAL Good luck with that, sounds like a true challenge.
Cheers.

What sucks about Yngwie is that he actually has the talent to write good songs but his ego gets in the way all the time.
+Lord Baktor my problem with yngwie is that i can't hate him for being an arrogant douchebag cause he's actually as skilled as he thinks he is.
+Lord Baktor What sucks about Yngwie is his love of cheesecake and he doesn't share.
+Andy Prokopyk why did this make me laugh?
Chris Pouliot because there's a little Yngwie in all of us.
+Lord Baktor oh yeah his ego is so big that one time in 90's the bass player got to shine a little bit on stage and that infuriated yngwie to the point that he fired him after the show.
just wow.

B.C Rich? Line 6? Wanking Out Of Tune? ZOMFG This HAS to be fake! xD
I had a band about eight years ago, and there was a guitar player exactly like this! He never played anything without messing it up and had the same setup except he had some noname Chinese combo instead of a Line 6.
I think it's fake too, he has to be trolling, he even had his guitar on the INSANE channel during the intro which is supposed to be CLEAN

"A little restraint goes a long way" Very well said! A band is a team, gotta be a team player!
How not to COMPLETELY SUCK at.........producing.
Ok. Good idea

A friend of mine once said to me this: "there are a lot of virtuosos oit there. Some of them actually make music, too."
Nice haha
I've been playing guitar for a little over 12 years now, and I just want to say that I've been waiting for a video like this. I often question my technique and song writing abilities, but watching this gives me comfort knowing that I'm taking the right approach. Like you said, show restraint when necessary and shred when appropriate. I'll be sure to remember that.
Kid owns a B.C Rich Warlock what did you expect?!
Fuck you my 2016 warlock sounds and performs better than my 2016 gibson sg faded that's a fact and its easier and more comfortable to play
So both my BC Riches (higher end imports) play better then my Gibsons. Sound is subjective, but playability is noticeable to everyone
@@sourpatchkid20 I can't stand the shape of a warlock. Literally the most uncomfortable guitar I've ever played besides any flying V. I would try getting your SG set up. Playability can be changed on ANY guitar. Through a setup, a 200 dollar guitar can play like a 2000 dollar guitar.
well it's a Warlock so i expect Wizardry. get it?
Nice. Now I can just SUCK instead of COMPLETELY SUCK.
Guy comes over and slaps the guitarist for sucking so bad: pure gold.
Shredding is more about theory and using scales properly, not just messy fucking notes everywhere. Zakk Wydle is a good example of shredding properly using proper theory and scales
Shredding without purpose is pure wankery, shredding WITH purpose is music.
Honestly, complexity can't be mindless. What you think about is pointless complexity, which I totally agree on.
@@NuclearHeadshot if it was with Ozzy then I understand why.. because Ozzy needs to get off stage and breathe. In the meanwhile Zakk and the drummer play their solos.

It's funny because most of Kirks solos in Death Magnetic sounds exactly like this guy. Don't get me wrong, I'm huge Metallica fan, but truth must be spoken.
tsunx4 he just used too much wah
tsunx4 You know it. It took a LONG time for that album to grow on me.
I'd rather listen to The Sex Kittens lol.

As a guitar player, I think this really hits the nail on the head. Good work, Glenn!
"And that's why I've never been to an Ingwie concert."
ZING.
You, my friend, just earned a subscriber.
Glenn, love your videos ❤️
Just a note, James Hetfield didn't miss the footswitch. His guitar just had a bad connection which was revealed in a later interview, which is why he kept rocking the pickup selector as that works sometimes (which it did).
Anyways, thanks for your awesome videos \m/
Great video, I love, and have missed these editorial, opinion videos. Keep em coming Glenn!
The one thing I always told my guitarist who falls into the problem guitarist you're describing: "one band, one sound. if you sound bad, we all sound bad." this line of thinking can save a band.
i too saw drumline
"Thats why I never went to an Yngwie concert..." I laughed my ass off at that even though I love Yngwie.
Hear hear! Couldn't agree more Glenn. Laughed a lot at this one, keep up the good work! Better to have simple well written structured songs and if people are walking out the door singing a line, humming a melody or simply banging their head to your riffs. Job done!
hey glenn! can u make a video giving tips on how to properly soundcheck while playing live!
Being in a band is hard enough when the rest of your band doesn't care.
Great vids guys! Keep rockin'!
Been watching a lot of your videos. guitars - all shredders, bassists - all dolts, vocalists, all mic cuppers. Got it.
I don't know who you are talking about about the clean/dirty switch. Enlighten me.
+Joshua Ruiz I want to know too.
Metallica xD
I'm fairly sure it's in reference to Dave Mustaine.
+Joshua Ruiz me too :/
James hettfield did it at the start of a song
your advice is gold, thank you.
Any plans for a video on recording heavy keyboards?
+ozthesoundchaser Just use midi profiling? xD
+ozthesoundchaser
Here's a how to record keyboards:
1) Plug it into your line in and get the keyboardist to play on it (in case of synths) or connect the midi controller to your PC and play on it (in case of software synths).
2) Apply EQ if needed.
3) Done!
Pianos are a bit trickier, they require a good soundproofed room and two large diaphragm mics, an additional kick mic helps on the bass strings. Midi profiling sounds very lifeless in my option due to the lack of small imperfections and velocity input.
nah man - he's gotta do xylophones first
As a guitar player, I agree 100%, I was that kid once, and I think most people go through that stage. Great video!
Anyone else watching this channel to get some inspiration? I am Glenn has a lot of good points that have actually helped me come a long way with my music. Keep being awesome Glenn
Glenn what are you saying? That guy melted my face off holy shit
Yeah, he melted my ears! What a great guitarist! -.-
+ezrocks4u its funny because only guitarists can tell how bad you actually are which is never excuse enough to be bad
Technical skill doesn't mean shit when you're lacking melody and musical sense altogether.
Seymour D. Buttz but that dude wasn't technical. It was sloppy, not clean and out of tune. If I had to guess... He was trolling
It always comes back to doing the work.
Who was Glen talking about when he mentioned missing the footswitch?
+MrBX5 I'm interested in this as well.
+MrBX5 Recently, Megadeth fired their tech. And they were playing the new songs on their tour
Just speculating...
+MrBX5 I think he means James Hetfield at Rock in Rio. The video is called 'James fails to switch guitar sound - Fade to black'
+AnusMacMuffin That wasn't a new song tho, which makes me more intrigued.
+AnusMacMuffin Thanks, just watched. He's such a champ for taking it lightly :) Dave Mustaine would've fired his staff for that..
Thanks for saying publicly what the rest of us have been saying to ourselves for years.
Don't forget to turn the gain down and also do not scoop the mids
ALL THE GAIN!!
Man...thanks for talking direct, simple and honest. Bless you.
Don't be jealous of that sic line 6 amp.
Wow Glenn I just loved this video. Helpful and SMART advice. My favorite video from you so far
Thankfully he's out of the band and our new guitarist has a decent tone, can play his parts and isn't a racist asshole.
i enjoyed this video , in my early years i was lead guitar player by default where everyone expected me to cover for there lack of talent , it got to where i was bored , at the time i couldn't be choosy i love bands like pantera where you have solid players and it sounds natural and organic and the solos add to the song not overshadow it
someone please show me where i can find the video of the guy "playing" One lmao
When he got to the "don't micromanage" bit, I laughed out loud. As a guitarist I have to constantly work on that bit because I am SO bad at that and I try to shove my nose into everything.
0:00 - 6:57 OK DAD!
I love the part about the guitar serving the song instead of the song being an excuse for an extended solo. I once read an interview with Eric Clapton where he said the same thing.
How was this a "how to video"? If you want to yell & holler just say so Glenn, we're used to it
I guess this was a little beyond your comprehension. Good luck with that bass guitar!
How do your tears taste?
what the fuck happened to your keyboard during that rant, it looks like you had a fucking seizure
What I love about this page is that he isn't afraid to keep it real, and the sarcastic, smart ass comedy is hysterical.
When the drummer is the smartest in the band... 4:00
What makes it better is he’s playing through a line 6 😂
Line 6s are not:
Chairs
Amps
Cabs
Garbage Cans
Suitable for anything
Please put this in York next comments vid, I love SMG videos, keep up the good work.
how to completely suck at guitar? watch Lil Wayne
"Yngwie is nothing but guitar noodling and self-indulgence!"
Have you even fucking listened to any of his solo work past the first album?
Where did I say that?
he never said that
SpectreSoundStudios It's called interference. You complain one second about guitar noodling and self-indulgence (blowing your guitar load everywhere) and follow it up with "... and that's why I've never gone to an Yngwie concert".
+TheTundraTerror Quotes usually are reserved for, y'know, quoting people. Not stating something you picked up through "interference [sic]."
You're thinking of "inference," perhaps? "To infer?" But k.
+periurban Finallly someone says it , i see people singing out of tune and they say its in tune , its just so bad :c
musicalisten1 Yeah, my daughter has a friend who is like that.
Sorry for my bad english btw :)
musicalisten1 Hey, it's the only language I speak so you are doing great!
BTW Love the videos Glenn
damn dude, this guy does NOT like bass players
Please don't bash Malmsteen. He isn't that pretentious
Spot on! I learned along time ago "less is more" also to make my solo's as melodic and to the point , I treat my solo's like adding frosting to the cake , to much and it becomes a sugary mess and you can not taste the flavor of the cake, just enough and you have a perfect balance.
I'm pretty sure the guy was joking... I hope...
Wow some real word of wisdom... i'm gonna share with my band this i hope they understand! Thank you Glen
Wow. he really hates bassists 😂

Music is the language of frequencies, harmonies and rhythm. Just like the alphabet, music has a base behind it and it's called music Theory
Just like you learn to speak before learning what makes up speaking in the first place, learning theory can GREATLY improve your global view about the subject
That is to say if you are not a lazy ass
Bass guitar is one of the most underrated and ridiculed instrument because most people don't know JACK FUCKING SHIT about music
Pro tip: musician speaking, not guitarist, not drummer, not occasional piano noodler, not occasional bassist... A damn musician
+Chris Pouliot I'm pretty sure he was saying that guitarists might be dumber than bassists.
Yeah.... If you're gonna play fast, please hit specific notes....
YES!!! Playing fast ONLY counts when:
A: Its musical
B: Its REPEATABLE
C: It doesn't suck
D: All of the above
Matthew Healy He scoops his mids aswell I think, just not overdone
In my opinion, this was a very poorly done how to.

reminds me of a vid I did a long while back playing a "guitar solo" as fast as possible. needless so say I learnt the lesson a long to time ago
Once saw a guy rent a 5150 for a small club gig just to forget to turn the gain on and play an entire death metal set on clean, including sweep solos...
I wish I was making this up
On a happier note, great video Glenn, a lot of guitarists in this world need to see this one...
Please share it wherever you can!
you're t-shirt is so cool. I fell in love with that spaceship the day I saw Battlestar Galactica pilot for the first time. It reminds me the X Wing, like som kind of a tribute.
+Samuel Martin your
Only watched 2 of this guy's vid and i already love him
