Guys The kit was set up for my style, he had crashes where my China’s are so it was just natural to go for them.. his kit is a 5 piece with one China by the floor toms all the rest crashes.. yes I cried my eyes out! I’m so proud of the man he’s become as well as a drummer! No drugs, drinking, just music!! Humble and kind to all, even some of you haters lol, got that from me!!
"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." P.S: Deen-o, thanks for the great music, man! I'm praying for you and hope you keep rocking for many and many years!
I met Deen one day when he came through the music store I was working at in Northern California asking about local gigs....this was about two years before he hooked up with Journey. He gave me his business card that read something about being a double bass champion. It seemed he was a very driven musician looking to go big time. When I heard about his new gig with Journey I thought to myself....well he did it!!! Good for him......... His son is a total banger on them drums too....hard hitter!!
@@angus4463 without a doubt Smith is still journey drummer regardless who they put back there.. like saying portinoy can play Neil's parts... he can get close but those are only the songs they made already. Then when he has to come up with new material with rush it will not ever be Neil's input or sound like rush.. Steve smith is an amazing drummer
Deen Castronovo's son gave a brilliant performance behind the kit during this video. If I read correctly, Kyle's mother said that Deen was crying over it... I can understand being proud of your son performing like that on stage behind your own band-mates. He showed his father's kind of ability, and he certainly looked like he was enjoying himself.
neechee5150 (your numbers says it all) ahhh the hater shows up!! FYI Dean's son did great; he has lots of talent, he takes after his dad, still, he is NOT his dad, he is a work in progress. He carried the band and the tune very well. I have played drums for over 30 years and are percussion graduated from college level, just in case you wondering.
Love this perspective of seeing the drummer in action. Also very touched by father and son kissing after an awesome performance. Real men not afraid to show their affection - awesome!
I went to high school with deens younger brother and have known them for years. I remember working the local clubs and deen playing in bands and I can tell you I have never seen anyone hit the sticks so hard and as far as for his arms being so high when he hits let me just say that's always been his style.. Deen has been my favorite drummer since the beginning I love watching him play and I love his voice. Deen has a new band called revolution saints and the album is amazing I absolutely love it. Last thing I would like to say was that I thought his son was incredible behind the ole man's drum kit he played allot like his dad which had to make deen very proud. Deen I love you bro and have watched you play everytime you come close to town one day I will catch up with you to get myself a autograph pic at least that's what I always tell my best friend jeff todd... Keep it up you his r rock God bless
people who comment on the sound quality and the "delay" etc.. don't understand exactly what it sounds like onstage from that position. I do. This was a very very solid job . Well done buddy.
That was awesome! My pops always hated me being a drummer, and I'll never have kids. Great to see the torch being passed on, and that it's in good hands.
He is marvelous. It’s an emotional moment when we hear and SEE the next generation of rockers take the reins from their father so effortlessly and at such a young age. Rock and roll really doesn’t ever die. Great job Kyle🤘🏻
As for the lead singer argument(s)... let it go, folks. This post is about a performance by a drummer. It's not here for you to whine over the fact that Steve Perry or other parties are no longer Journey's lead. Let it go.
Awesome job. People do not realize how hard it is to play live on stage. No pun intended but he did not miss a beat. A very solid performance. Also a favorite of mine.
Been a follower ever since I was 5,self taught and Journey is where my passion comes from.Great to see Dean's son play, what a moment for him.I have alot of history with their music and is what has created a solid foundation for my playing.I owe you all a dear thank you for your passion
it's raw. I remember first time playing on stage. such a diffrent experience. at first I was like wtf I'll never be able to do this....I got used to it....and the rush is like nothing else
Like father like son. Great teaching, dad. Love it (and with the highly-accentuated left hand-snare drum part that shows more energy and enthusiasm) Loved the entire performance. You should be proud, dad.
Awesome job Kyle!!! Your dad Deen really taught you great!!!! I love how you incorporated those china cymbals into your playing!!! Fantastic job there Kyle!! Your dad Deen is a fantastic drummer too!! Glad to see he’s doing well now...
That was so koowl for dean to see his son perform professionally and his son will never forget this unbelievable dream come true and he did it with journey .. one of the greatest bands of all time ! 👍👍👍
Look at Ross go right up to him to “lock in” as they say. He’s layering his baseline into the drums in the beginning because obviously there will be subtle differences. Total pro!
Thanks for posting this. Really great to get this drummers POV, well sort of. To those confused about the sound, do you really think it sounds the same to them as to the audience over the big speakers? Of course not. I loved hearing this rawer sound from behind the kit. Must've been the highlight of his life right there and we got to share in it, fantastic. Thank You.
You can hear the stereophonic sound of the drums when playing big shows. It is really a rush as a drummer when you first play a show with a PA. It's kind of like a massive stereo that you are controlling. I never played a show that size but I'd imagine it would be wild. I played with monitors but it sounds like there are ear pieces for shows this big.
How awesome was that. What a proud moment for mom and dad. Talented like Dean and probably a genuine down to earth guy like his father. I had an opportunity to meat and talk a bit with Dean in Chicago and was amazed at how down to earth he is. I complimented him not only about his drum playing, but his singing ability and we was really genuine with his appreciation about my comments unlike others who would stick their nose up in the air as they walked away.
Great drummer and great teacher! Seen Deen at the City Auditorium in Colorado Springs with Bad English way back and his solo gave me chills! Great drumming heritage for sure!
This is sooo awesome Shelly!!! So weird all these years later and now we have kids that can do what we do ha!! I can't wait for the Mortifeds CD!!! Deen always tells me Kyle is an amazing drummer.
That's awesome when a father and son can have moments like this. I play drums I wish my son would of wanted to play them as well but never did. But I am fortunate to be able to ride motocross with my son and snow board with my other son.
to the ppl hating on china cymbals: they do sound much better mic'd don't they? Hearing the natural unamplified sound is a lot different than what's coming out of the PA. Anyone agree?
paulyabe He needs to lay off them though, China's aren't supposed to be used as a crash. Just my opinion but it just sounds immature to put a China in place of a crash especially on such a classic number. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a life long quest for the perfect China's but... just know their place in a percussion setting.
Wizzle I kind of agree with you...but this is a live gig, even Steve Smith would have hit whatever he would have felt like it if he would sit on those drums configured like that; they are set after DC liking and according to his style of playing. In my own cover of that song I hit my chinas only the last 2 hits at the end, I thought it was cool to do. By the way if you still shopping for great chinas get the Sabian Paragons; I got mine from the Neil Peart's Paragon set. Can not go wrong with those, they rock!
I love it 👍 and ya better look out Dean, he looked pretty comfy on your stool 😂😂😂. All kidding aside. He's damn good and what a thrill it must have been to play with journey in front of a journey crowd. I know you are proud. Dean, you truly are extremely talented and blessed because you are the only person in the world that keeps the journey sound (Steve Perry) alive and strong for us! I hope you see that as a compliment. You and your family have overcome some big obstacles and triumphed. I can't wait to see you in concert again. I try to attend every chance possible when you are touring with them. God bless you and your family. Thank you for such wonderful years and memories.
Double treat Not only seeing Kyle on the drums. But also, getting a true feeling of how a drummer is sort of 'on their own', behind the drums. Because they have to remember all the drum parts without knowing where the guitarist, bassist and keyboardist are in the song. I guess that is why STRYPER Drummer Robert Sweet has the moniker of 'Visual Time Keeper'.
First of all I know I'm late to the party but like Father and Son Kyle kicked serious ass and people need to stop hating grow up the kids did a good job just like his father case closed😊💪👍🏻❤🇺🇸🎸
Kyle Castronovo I think he is not kid, He is a man now. He has a great teacher a great legend; His father Dean. He did a great job in that concert.. specially knowing that he was in the spotlight. No matter what the people said. He rocks and he is very good and talented. Most of all he has the support of his father. You can see it at the beginning of the song and in the end of it when his father hld him and kiss him.
You people know nothing about playing on THE BIG STAGE. What you were hearing was the raw sound of the drums, but did you not see the roadie putting inner ear monitors on the kid when he sat down on the drums ????? He was hearing a everything almost as it was out front.

People have no idea how things really sound behind the kit...Deen has discussed this in interviews...sometimes the in-ear doesn't work...then you can't hear the mix...deal with that LIVE in front of 25k people!
Im a drummer in a band bombspott a local band in washington state..Im the same age as Deen, deen is to me like steve smith is to him, Ive followed his drumming since wild dogs and have every recording hes ever been on..one day I hope I meet Deen and to tell him thanx and want him to know how much joy he brings to me when I hear his playing on every album..Ive heard about deens son kyle 4 years ago..cool to see him play.
KKKKYYYYLLLLEEEE!!!!! Nicely done my man! You've definitely got a lot of your dad's mannerisms and traits when it comes to your attack. One word I've used in so many articles when describing his presence behind the kit is "bombastic" and you've got that in spades. Now, if you can kick a bag as well as he can, you've got some serious chops! Last time I played hackey sack with Deen was in Tucson in '05 and he shamed both Jim and I continuously! You rock bro! Can't wait to hear you on Mother Father
Amazing performance from Kyle, Deen can be very proud, i'm sure he is....loved to see Deen's kit from behind the driver's seat...noticed the not so comfortable ride cymbal position...and playing to backing tracks ?

Perfect ... Great performance.
Deen, hope you’re on the short list for the tour
Great skills. Must have had a pretty good teacher ;-)
"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."
P.S: Deen-o, thanks for the great music, man! I'm praying for you and hope you keep rocking for many and many years!
Very cool....the kid has some chops!!! But, by far, the coolest thing about this video is the love and pride of a father on display for his son.
manuela aarbelaz
Absolutely!
Yes i love it when Deen shows his love for his son with kiss and hug. He is very proud and good father.
I met Deen one day when he came through the music store I was working at in Northern California asking about local gigs....this was about two years before he hooked up with Journey. Deen is still my favorite Journey drummer of them all. Looks like his son inherited his ability to absolutely tear those toms up. Love it!
Mine as well
Experience is not inherited! He has worked hard to get there. Do not forget that.
Steve smith ..
Deen Castronova has been one of my all time favorite drummers going back to the 80's in the band Cacophony with Jason Becker and Marty Friedman.

Awsum playing Kyle!!! Man you lived the dream of thousands of drummers getting to play with Journey and you killed it bro!! 👍🏻👍🏻
I only hope that my sons feel the same respect and admiration from me that Kyle did from his dad Deen. Great moment in life for you two......
