+Vincent Shen I hated the on-foot sequences. The control was bad and the camera was obstructive, and I just don't feel it was pulled off well. But the flying stages are easily some of the best in the series.
Objection. You just had to set the controls to double analog. You didn't ever have to deal with pressing R then moving the analog and then pressing A to fire after that. It was perfect. And the multiplayer was the best in the series
+Bj Holstege Yeah, Star Fox 64's multiplayer sort of came off as an "Uhhhh... crap, we don't have anything... HERE GO SHOOT AT EACH OTHER IN WIDE OPEN SPACES K BYE" thing. I figure it was because it was released close (sorta) to the launch of the N64 or, more than likely, they just ran the fuck out of space on the cartridge. The GameCube gave them enough room on the disk to actually DO things.
yeah but the foot mode ruin it star fox should be no more than shutting in the ship or the tank or the sub , nothing else the foot mode ruined the game for me
Star Fox Assault made me into the rabbid, frothing Star Fox fanatic I am today. The gameplay was superb, the music was outstanding, the story was the best in the series, and the voice acting suited every character perfectly. I know everyone's clamoring for the next game to be like Star Fox 64, but I personally think that elements from Assault would really make it stand out as a next-gen Nintendo title.
I feel the exact same way, although I have to agree with the game historian on that it didn't feel as if they pushed it enough. It had way more potential than what they actually delivered
numetalmarkchavez24 I agree. That's why I want to see a next-gen Star Fox game done in Assault's style, to fulfill that potential and go above and beyond in terms of gameplay modes and content. Everyone really wants another Star Fox 64, but I want to see the series evolve past simple. arcade flight action. With the right kind of implementation, it could culminate the best things both 64 and Assault introduced. The space action could replicate the high-octane space battles in games like Halo Reach, while the ground missions could integrate gameplay elements from 3rd-Person titles like Ratchet and Clank, combined with the seamless switching between land combat, aerial combat, and tank control from Assault. I don't want Star Fox 64: Part II....I want a Star Fox sequel.
Yes, that would be awesome, especially since Zero was so awful. Sadly, Nintendo drives the ignorance train with many franchises. So because SFZ was by far the least successful game of the franchise, they might simply dip it instead of giving it a new shot. Afterall, we are waiting for a new F-Zero for 15 years now, and Nintendo doesn't seem to give a shit.
Wonderful retrospective! It's amazing how these franchises hold such big places in our hearts. I still remember being in elementary school, sitting in class, day dreaming about getting home and playing some Star Fox 64. Man I loved that game. You could play and play and it would never get old.
+Morgil it felt like an attempt to end the series on a high ground, in case another entry would become unfeasible.I think both Starfox and F-zero ended on a high note and I would like to remember them that way, its better than later entries become more miss than hit, like Metroid, give Samus a break, at least in federation force she woulnt be present as if she was on a vacation XD.
This was superbly done! Hope to see you cover other franchises soon (suggestions if you're looking for ideas: Street Fighter, Battletoads, Castlevania).
Great four part series on an epic franchise! And btw, seeing a Kansas City baseball helmet beside the Gaming Historian near the end of the video was also epic as they've just won the World Series in 2015! :D
Love your videos! I discovered one and now I'm hooked and watching them all. Oddly enough I love seeing how much the video game business has changed, I've learned a lot from you regarding business tactics and mistakes simply from watching these video game companies compete against each other
1:27 "On Valentines Day 2005, StarFox was released to the public." You didn't mention that the game came out February 1st as a 2-week exclusive at Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, this was after rental stores' peak in the early 2000s and beginning of their decline as part of their last ditch efforts to remain relevant. This is actually how I played through the game, grinding through it during my 5-day rental. Star Fox Assault was actually an excellent rental game, with a short campaign that could be completed in a few hours.
After one week as follower TheGamingHistorian has become my favorite video games RUclips channel. Delicious material. Congratulations and greetings from Chile 🇨🇱🎮
Thank you so much for making this its so cool to see the history of my favorite franchise. My one complaint to starfox command was that blasted timer on missions that messed me up so bad
Very good retrospective on the starfox series. Personaly I enjoyed SF.Assault more than the other games, I've adapted to the on foot gameplay. The game has tons of multiplayer unlocks and is one of the best local mulitplayer shooters I've played right up with Halo 2. Also note in multiplayer all foot levels, feel like sandbox levels and you can litterly climb everywhere and Its a fun game to find secrets and glitches to. Also mega kudos for mentioning Dylan Cuff making Blasto, hilarious game.
a realy underrated milestone of the gaming industry, im awaiting an undertale / earthbound version of this in the future. somebody has to do it. i would not touch the game again as it is. it is a finished product. keep the charackters for other nintendo titles, but take the concept and make a brand new game out of it, this time, the right way.
Star fox 64....that brings me way back. Good times indeed. Played the game more then a million times. Beat it half as much, and found just about every glitch, Easter egg, and hidden secrets in the game. If not all of them at least. I remember getting off of school going into my families trailer on a hot day. Finishing homework for the day. Getting some pizza(or whatever we had to eat). Setting up the Nintendo, and then playing star fox until it was time to sleep.
With Star Fox Zero coming out in the near future, I think it would be awesome if they included Star Fox 2 in there either as an unlockable or an extra. Especially since apparently a few things things from 2 made their way into Zero.
Then there are gamers like me, that departed from Nintendo consoles after the SNES. The only game of this series i've played extensively is the original, and I love it to death.
frankly assault is my favorite starfox game. Cool, dramatic (Even if a bit over the top) story, amazing control, gorgeous visuals, and i like the on foot segments alot.
Star Fox is the first game I can remember playing where the graphics blew me away. Before that I was a big time gamer but graphics had never really made an impact on me but seeing ships flying around in 3d blew my little 8 year old mind. Then it was blown again by the rumble pack a few years latter,it took me a while to get used to playing a game with a controller that fought back. This was a really good series of videos, thank you for your hard work.
For me the best star fox game is assault. That game is so good, sure there are some parts that need improvement and it is too short, but it holds a special place in my heart. I hope this year's new star fox gets some inspiration from assault
I loved assault the most, I remember playing the multiplayer with my brother constantly and the on ground shooting was amazing I loved the options. I remember cornering my brother as Star wolf in some sorta pyramid so he couldn't escape, alot of fun!
A great Retrospective, Norm! Good job! I like Starfox Assault and Command. I have not yet tried SF643D but I plan to eventually. I do hope they plan to make a new StarFox for the Wii U. Imagine the possibilities with the GamePad!
I could have sworn there was talk about a Metroid and Starfox crossover game in the works, or at least the possibility of one. I remember hearing about it sometime during the anticipation of the Wii U's release.
Star Fox 64 3D multiplayer felt striped down compared to the original N64 version and even Command. Both Landmaster and On Foot where removed + no online.
Charlie Chinchilla Well Rare it's another example, check out their games in SNES and N64, those were flawless too, and then, check Star Fox adventures, Banjo Kazooie Nuts n' bolts, and, of course, Kinect sports
5:47 would love to know about those costumes, like whether they still exist, if they were just used for box art, or was a tv show in the works, and does anyone own the original costumes, theyd be a pretty cool collectors item methinks.
so i saw you on the game chasers and decided to check out some vids...2 hours of non stop vids later i decided to just go ahead and subscribe. good deal man!
AGREE! Yay for a part 5 about Star Fox Zero! And Star Fox 2 has gotten an official release too! those two things alone should give enough fodder for another video!!!
Star Fox Zero was made. And by far I love this game. This was the game that I was able to change modes on not just the at wing but the land master too. The Gyrowing seem cool.
Also don't forget the first level of Star Fox: Assault is an tribute of Legend of the Galactic Heroes anime. Just look at it, it looks pretty much like the anime. Indeed Star Fox was going for that Space Epic / Space Opera feel. That kind of music is typical for Space Operas.
And with Snes mini we will officially get StarFox 2. However I have never played any Starfox game but tried the 3DS version but never liked the control with gyro... didn't worked well with 3DS xl. But I believe if I get my hands on the Snes mini I will probably have time to try out the old games in the serie and hopefully understand their greatness:P
"He worked on the game Blasto!" The poor man. If playing that game at 8 years old had me banging my head against a wall, I can't imagine what making it was like.
This is my second time watching these videos. They are very well done. I can't wait for the announced Star Fox Wii U game, especially since the rumors are that it is going to be mostly if not exactly like Star Fox 64. That is what the franchise needs, to get back to it's roots, and on rails space shooter with some "All-range" gameplay peppered in lightly. Hopefully they choose not to do any on foot segments, because that horribly hurt Star Fox Assault for me. It had some fantastic on rails sections and "All-range" sections, but the one foot parts were slow and frustrating. It seriously pissed me off when I had to get out of my Arwing on some of the planet or space station type missions. It was even worse when I was having a blast flying around shooting things down and then I was shot out of my Arwing and left on foot. If anything I would have rather died and started back in my Arwing then have the on foot sections after getting shot down.
Man this was such a good series. Really made me nostalgic about Star Fox 64. Tho I did'nt know about the other sequels besides the crappy dinosaur planet conversion and the 3ds n64 port. I'm going to look into getting a DS to play Star Fox Command.
Great series of vids. I don't know why so many hate on Starfox Assault. It's one of the most visually impressive and has unique run & gun third person gameplay. It's a shame that Miyamoto would even consider cancelling this series.
Jacob Lewis Thanks but I didn't say it was cancelled. I was referring to the part of the video where he said if the next game isn't a success Miyamoto would "consider cancelling" the series.
Too much detail? I love your videos norm, I wish everything you put out was 15-20 mins. Go into as much detail as you want, you have interesting things to say!
What is the music that is playing when the Retroweartv logo comes flying across the screen at the beginning of this video? It sounds so great, and just curious if there is a longer version?
I hope to god that they make a brand new Star Fox game for the Wii U. The Wii U needs this series. I mean, imagine all the control innovations it would have! Like using the Gamepad to go into cockpit mode. Or flying an R-wing with just a Wiimote Plus. Or having classic Star Fox controls on the classic controllers, pro controller or Wiimote and Nunchuck. Plus online multiplayer. Ooo I wish I was a developer for Nintendo!
+Alex Day Yeah, Star Fox Zero, (despite it's name, which makes it sound like a prequel to the Original on NES It's Star Fox 7 or 8, depending if you say Star Fox 64 is 2 or 3)on Wii U.
Even though I enjoyed this 4 part Starfox Retrospective, I feel like this final part was lacking in detail. Here you skimmed through Starfox Assault being the most linear of all the games and that the Great Fox was sacrificed while reaching the Aparoid Homeworld. Not to mention Starfox Command's unique stylus control and "story affecting route" approach of the game in comparison to starfox 64 where it was the other way around as well as the 9 endings. Despite this I appreciate the videos.
I still believe that, to this day, Star Fox Assault is the most underated game in the series. IT WAS SO GOOD
+Vincent Shen I hated the on-foot sequences.

I agree. I adore Star Fox 64, but I love the more story heavy aspect of Star Fox Assault. I hope the new game pulls elements from both.
Hylia's Hero Here's hoping they do.
Make a Part 5 about Star Fox Zero!
YellowFroggy33 Not going to have online multiplayer!
+YellowFroggy33 Starfox Zero was barely announced, not enough information for a part 5,yet...
It's out now!
Came here to say that. Assault has been out for long enough now! We desperately need a Switch game too!
Can we not
Star Fox for the Switch needs to happen!! It would fit the system so well, especially the chance to bring back online multiplayer.
Also local and motion control
What about starlink tho
@@matzer1110 it's not a game in Star Fox series
It just a exclusive crossover on switch
Yes, that would be awesome, especially since Zero was so awful. Sadly, Nintendo drives the ignorance train with many franchises. It did. Starlink battle for atlas
Wonderful retrospective!
It's amazing how these franchises hold such big places in our hearts. I still remember being in elementary school, sitting in class, day dreaming about getting home and playing some Star Fox 64.
Man I loved that game. You could play and play and it would never get old.
The thing I liked most about assault was the story, and just how dark it got.
To me it was that and also the gameplay. being able to fight on foot and getting on the landmaster or the arwing in a jiffy was an awesome feeling
I can't get into the StarFox games but I appreciate them so much more after this docu-series.
This was superbly done! Hope to see you cover other franchises soon (suggestions if you're looking for ideas: Street Fighter, Battletoads, Castlevania).

great work man love your videos, star fox is often overlooked and glad someone took the time and dedication to do the series justice
2018 and Im watching this series, is awesome
Imo this franchise actually needs more appreciation. Too much attention is focussed on mario and pokemon. Can't wait for starfox wii u
I am so sorry.
1:27 "On Valentines Day 2005, StarFox was released to the public."

Loved all the parts - thanks for doing justice to a game series I have many fond memories of! :D
Another awesome and interesting history series! Adventures and Assault will always be guilty pleasures of mine.
This was a great video series. I've only played a couple Star Fox games, but it was fun to look back in the series. :)
I just got Star Fox Assault couple week's ago...
AND I LOVE IT!!!
MY PERSONAL FAVORITE STAR FOX GAME OF HALL TIME!!!!
Awesome retrospective in 4 parts! Thanks for this. Starfox for SNES is my favorite game.
Awesome video my friend! Awesome research and very detailed information! Great content here!
This was well thought out and helpful. A newcomer to the series I am eager to get into it.
After one week as follower TheGamingHistorian has become my favorite video games RUclips channel. Delicious material. Congratulations and greetings from Chile 🇨🇱🎮
Bravo! Love your channel and all the work you do to keep it going. Cheers
Over here waiting for Star Fox on the switch!!
I remember playing Star Fox Assault. I really enjoyed it
Thank you so much for making this its so cool to see the history of my favorite franchise. My one complaint to starfox command was that blasted timer on missions that messed me up so bad
Its mid 2022 and Nintendo seems to have absolutely no plans to release a new Starfox game for the Switch. :(
Great 4 part review. Thanks for taking the time to it all together.
Very good retrospective on the starfox series.

Not to mention the walker.
Speaking of which, If you hate star fox zero for the Walker, you would of hated star fox 2.
I actually think star fox 2 was a brilliant game and if it had've come out a year before it got cancelled it would've been a massive hit.
wariodude128 they included star fox 2 for the snes classic
Then there are gamers like me, that departed from Nintendo consoles after the SNES. The only game of this series i've played extensively is the original, and I love it to death.
Nostalgia Works Gamecube was awesome, though.
The Wii is an underrated console
Check out the Switch man, its fucking awesome.
Beautiful history! and Starfox lives on in Nintendo Switch Starlink Battle for Atlas!
frankly assault is my favorite starfox game. Cool, dramatic (Even if a bit over the top) story, amazing control, gorgeous visuals, and i like the on foot segments alot.

Star Fox 64 3D multiplayer felt striped down compared to the original N64 version and even Command. Both Landmaster and On Foot where removed + no online.
Thanks for links Norm, I was thinking of watching the other three videos again before watching the end of this epic saga
Terrific series! Thanks!
We need a remaster of Star Fox Assault for the switch
That first voice of Star Fox is how I pictured his voice.
In fact it's how I picture the voice of most male Nintendo lead characters
Can't wait for Star Fox Zero! :3
Jony Silva X I kinda fear it, i mean, they can screw up again
*cof cof* adventures 2 *cof cof*
walter937 Platinum is making it. I highly doubt its going to be a failure. They are monsters at making games. Look at Bayonetta that game is flawless.
Charlie Chinchilla Well, there's always a first time
walter937 True a lot of people say they didnt like Metal Gear Rising but I loved that game. I guess we will all see in the end.
Charlie Chinchilla Well Rare it's another example, check out their games in SNES and N64, those were flawless too, and then, check Star Fox adventures, Banjo Kazooie Nuts n' bolts, and, of course, Kinect sports

The music of Star Fox Assault is EPIC
This is a good catchphrase for star fox zero: The Next Generation.
0:50 so project aces helped develop star fox assault, neat.
so i saw you on the game chasers and decided to check out some vids...2 hours of non stop vids later i decided to just go ahead and subscribe. good deal man!
Love your series dude. What will you do next?
AGREE! Yay for a part 5 about Star Fox Zero! And Star Fox 2 has gotten an official release too! those two things alone should give enough fodder for another video!!!
I first emailed this guy asking for star fox 3 years ago. He finally did it
Star Fox Zero was made.
LOGH is my favorite anime. Awesome to here.
I think they should make another Assault-styled Starfox game. With online multiplayer.
That was a great little series on the Starfox games, it made me sub to your channel :)
"I've been waiting for this, Star Fox."
No, really, i've been waiting this part for days. Thank you!
Starfox Assault looks awesome.
I wanna play it
I do wish that Namco’s planned Star Fox arcade game was made. Imagine how cool that would be to play Star Fix in the arcades?
And with Snes mini we will officially get StarFox 2. However I have never played any Starfox game but tried the 3DS version but never liked the control with gyro... didn't worked well with 3DS xl. But I believe if I get my hands on the Snes mini I will probably have time to try out the old games in the serie and hopefully understand their greatness:P
You know you can change the gyro comtrol scheme to nomal controls on the 3DS version of Star Fox 64.
"He worked on the game Blasto!"
The poor man. If playing that game at 8 years old had me banging my head against a wall, I can't imagine what making it was like.
“Will there be another star fox game in the future”
“Star Fox Zero would like to know your location”
Personally, out of all the Nintendo titles, Starfox has been an all time favourite of mine. I hope they continue making Starfox games in the future.
This is my second time watching these videos. They are very well done. Starfox Assault--best Arwing design
Star Fox Adventures was a HUGE f*ck up. I remember playing that and thinking... but, why????
Damn Good Video, Brillantly and Professionally done!
Man this was such a good series. Really made me nostalgic about Star Fox 64. Tho I did'nt know about the other sequels besides the crappy dinosaur planet conversion and the 3ds n64 port. I'm going to look into getting a DS to play Star Fox Command.
Starfox franchise have a great amount of good music numbers .. but the 'corneria' from first game is always my favourite .. nothing can beat it .
this is the best channel on you tube!!!
ya did the series good man :) Nice retrospective
I miss Star fox. Good video man.
Enjoyed this retrospect, I love the Starfox series! Tell me more about the Starfox Starbucks tshirt, desperately need one! Lol
Wolf: Can't let you brew that.
Leon: Annoying turd, I'm drinking on!
Andrew: Andross' cuppa tea is MY cuppa tea!
Pigma: Peppy... Long time, no eat!
I just wish they stuck with the first star fox music theme, that was just so much more epic.
Great series of vids. I don't know why so many hate on Starfox Assault. It's one of the most visually impressive and has unique run & gun third person gameplay. It's a shame that Miyamoto would even consider cancelling this series.
The series isn't cancelled...there's a new game coming out on Wii U in early 2016...
Jacob Lewis Thanks but I didn't say it was cancelled. I was referring to the part of the video where he said if the next game isn't a success Miyamoto would "consider cancelling" the series.

Probably my favorite Starfox game
I really don't understand why everyone wants online in Star Fox so much. It's not the main focus of the series.
I hope to god that they make a brand new Star Fox game for the Wii U. The Wii U needs this series. I mean, imagine all the control innovations it would have! Still watching this 6 years later. Dang Norm came along way.
1st point love the Review, Two love the Shirt Norm, and Three have you been working out you look stacked.
Amazing reviews!
I actually love Star Fox Adventure
We need MORE Star Fox games.
+Alex Day Yeah, Star Fox Zero, (despite it's name, which makes it sound like a prequel to the Original on NES It's Star Fox 7 or 8, depending if you say Star Fox 64 is 2 or 3)on Wii U.
oh that snes tune at the end...
3:55 ...finished Star Fox..._to completion_.
Arin: GAAAAAH!!!
Oh man I forgot all about Blasto, I loved that game as a kid and had no idea it is made by the same guy as star fox
Even though you have to unlock to play Star Fox 2 on the SNES classics it’s a great way to experience it.
