NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Are you ready for Ryotaro and his hidden jam?!
I'm not.
I AM INCREDIBLY READY
yes!!!
This is the earliest I've ever been. So exciting!
Hello there Chris, How are you doing?
@SpongeBob wow 😍
Can we get a series where Natsuki drags you along a whole entire trip that he planned himself and do whatever he wants without saying no
@Not RickRoll 👇 thanks for the soap fam
I want to say yes.
But no.
Half of the itinerary will be smoke breaks
@@AbroadinJapan you should consider it, people would really enjoy a vid like that
@@AbroadinJapan can you replace Ryotaro in this scenario like last time he made you climb a cliff by a chain
Chris: "After 5 years, we've finally figured it out."
*messes it up 2min later eating dessert*
Hahaha came here for this comment, noticed that as well.
@@spinnie0 same haha
Yeah but they remembered the next day! That by itself is progress... maybe
Lmao
Chris to Ryotaro : "You f-in donkey!"
Chris to Natsuki : "Oh dear oh dear gorgeous"
Literally, **chef's kiss**
Ryotaro can open a “Hidden Jam” company with a slogan of “More strawberry than strawberry”. 😆🍓🍓
😹👍) Ryotaro the best!) 😻
Actually, "more xfruit than xfruit" is a common Japanese saying and other companies use it already. It just means an intense, concentrated taste that captures the essence of the fruit. I was surprised that Chris missed that bc he is generally good with Japanese cultural /linguistic references.
Ryotaro's neverending sarcasm and Natsuki's shenanigans always bring a smile to my face. Love this channel.
*Risottoro
I feel like Ryotaro over time learned to match Chris's sarcasm and it kind of works. Although sometimes I feel Chris comes off a little too harsh despite them being pals.
Ryotaro was the rare specimen Japanese person who can unlock sarcasm
@@graymatter242 Chris isn't that harsh tho .. if this is harsh My friend group was bullying each other this whole time . Yeah sure he is sarcastic, but Risottoro is his friend and they are both accustomed to each other.
I love the banter between them. They're always bullshitting each other
Eating with these guys had my anxiety level up. Taking in members to whoever wants to join my Slow Eaters Club! ✋✋
i feel your pain alex...-fellow slow eater (probably slower than you):)
As one would. Very brave of you to sit so close to Chris while he was feeding :P
I feel your pain as a slow eater also named Alex
Was the kid who always ended up alone at the tables whenever we had meals at camps cause of how slow I ate, so yea kinda a veteran member of the club :')
Makan perlahan-perlahan lebih bagus dari makan terlalu pantas👍❤️greetings from upstate NY
Honestly, i find Ryotaro hilarious. That conversation about how he eats his shaved ice was the best!
watching these makes me wanna visit new places so bad
Same here dude

Absolutely same
Disgusting
💀💀
Chris: mocks Ryotaro for saying “Hidden jam”
Me: Yeah, okay mister “crows and cons”.
OH NOOOOOOOO!!! I have two girlfriends, but very few people on YT are happy for my relationship success. They disl*ke all of the videos I make with my 2 girlfriends. Please be kind, dear da

There is just something about Chris uploading a new video that gives me a huge amount of joy. It's like catching up again with a very old friend, and I have never even met him. I appreciate him so much for his years of top quality content, and the ability to grow up alongside one of the best RUclipsrs the site has and will ever know is something that I cherish.
I feel exactly the same pal
Couldn't have said it better.
I Feel the same too
same thoughts, every time a new video drops :)
same!!
I always love when you interact with who is behind the camera, makes the journey more than our lovable british man and our guest of the week, we get to have a 3 person dynamic rather than a 2 person one
I can't believe Ryotaro just dropped the bombshell that he has a 6 year old kid.
On another note amazing video.
I was just wondering if that was something he'd talked about before. Or was he talking about a hypothetical 6-year-old child?
I love how Chris thoroughly researches his source material for his videos, such as when he combs through old family albums to find childhood photos of Ryotaro.
hahaha
Risottaro
Calling out Alex for enjoying her meal was the cutest most genuine moment that usually end up in making of, or omitted but ended up in the video and I loved that
I love how she also laughed in the sweets part when shes normally entirely silent
2:55 The Asahi Headquarters building really was built to emulate a mug of beer, but Ryotoro skipped mentioning the more (in)famous part of that complex which is partially visible to just to the right - the "Flamme d'Or" - known colloquially as "The Golden Turd". The architect intended the structure to be a golden flame representing the spirit of the Asahi Brewery workers. If you take a Sumida River boat tour, it will take you right by both buildings as well as give a great view of the Tokyo Skytree.
Chris, you've cost me $8000! (But happily so)
For many years I've been watching your awesome content and my daughter has been watching along with me. She particularly loves this Asakusa video.
When my daughter turned 5 she asked me if we could go to Japan for her 6th birthday, not thinking she was serious I casually said 'sure, why not'. Honestly I thought she'd forget about it all - but did she? Heck no!
Anyway, her birthday is in January 2023 and we are booked to go to Japan for nearly a month. We're even staying a few nights in the same Ryokan as in this video and we have managed to find the same dessert place - my daughter, Charlotte, is desperate to eat the shaved ice and the blue Hawaiian drink you guys have.
So, you've cost me $8K in flights but it's with a smile on my face I'm saying that. Thanks for all your wonderful RUclips and Podcast content, can't wait to be back in Japan in just a few short months from now. Cheers, Rowan
Loved reading this story! Hope you can find your way back to Japan again!
Legend has it that under the dark gritty underground of Asakusa, Alex is still finishing her plate of yakisoba.
Poor Alex! I felt sorry for her trying to keep up with those two lol
more strawberry than strawberry is another reference to bladerunner... "more human than human". Deep cut there ryotaro
Hah, came here to post this.
And to think that it has been 39(!) years since this film was released and it is still relevant.
Yup I came to say the same.
I love the subtle filming techniques that Chris keeps using. blurring shots for a fraction before panning into them, panning in different directions every shot, and getting shots that have multiple focal points in them. Idk im not a filmmaker but I can tell this channel keeps improving on its (already solid) techniques. Keep it up Chris!
Oh yeah, Chris has serious skills.
I catch myself taking mental notes every time I watch one of his (recent) videos.
Don't you mean Alex?! I mean she's in the video!
@@NectarineSoup it's almost disrespectful that he names all the cinematography tricks being used and then credits them to Chris even though this is one of the few videos where we actually get to see and meet the cinematographer. Chris even calls her the "Top Cinematographer" in the video so he's outright admitting that the things being praised here are ALL Alex Lee. We get to see Chris manning the camera inside the onsen and we can clearly see that his skills are noticeably lacking compared to hers.
Its amazing how many people share an umbrella....
Alex is me while eating. Very relatable, I love it. :')
didn’t expect to see you here
didn’t expect to see you here.
Hey Pearl 👋
Found another place for Scar to build
Didn’t expect to see you here
Welcome back Ryotaro. Please invite him more often! He's a cool dude.
Ryotaro is so fun to watch lol
he's just really enthusiastic and happy
I understood so much just by “it’s more strawberry than strawberry” than Chris’ eloquently spoken descriptions.
It melts in your mouth 👄
My favorite part was how he refused to get in the onsen with Ryotaro but squeezed himself into a log bathtub with Joey
To be fair, Rissotoro was butt naked in there, (I think), whereas Joey wasnt. That said... They _have_ gotten in an Onsen naked together before in another video, so yeah. Maybe he wasn't feeling like it after Ryotaro's shaved ice comment.
I liked his "More strawberry than strawberry" nod to Blade Runner.... I can't be the only one who felt that, right?
13:00 - The onsen manager just creeping about is hilarious, he's like, oops, don't mind me, just going to slide back out of your b-roll shot, as you where chaps 😂
Chris and Ryotaro eating Yakisoba: "We finally sat on the correct side"
Chris and Ryotaro eating their sweets: *Wipes that from their memory*
Chris and Ryotaro eating breakfast: "Oh right, we sat on the correct side before"
Haha yeah ikr I was like ok guys you forgot already
do you know where is it? what is the address?
Chris: Ryotoro is my worst enemy.
Also Chris: does multiple collabs featuring him.
You know the saying "Keep your friends close, and your assassins closer" lol!
When we were in Japan 3 years ago, we ended our stay in this exact ryokan. It was beautiful and surprisingly affordable, even during the Sanja Mitsuri. And the street food going on during the mitsuri was just crazy and everywhere and so so so good. Highly recommend.
I love the gritty roughy around the edges places. The historical meets modern by way of neon and grime. Love it.
Ryotoro: *simply exists
Chris: Ryotoro ruined everything.
It's his fault for cumming on icecream..
“We finally sat the right way round”
*cuts to next shot*
*sitting wrong way and bumping arms*
Never change
Did you see the "PREVIOUSLY ON ABROAD IN JAPAN" label at the bottom?
@@mfaizsyahmi I think he is referring to when it cut to them eating the ice cream & shaved ice and they're bumping arms again.
As an 22 y/o Jpanese girl, I used lived in Asakusa and i moved a lot in my life, but i feel like Asakusa is the best area to live
Ryotaro has been missed, glad to see him back
I just want to say that I really love it when people acknowledge the person behind the camera! It's not only humbling, but oftentimes the camera person is interesting too. :]
I have missed Seeing Ryotaro! To be honest he's my favourite right after Chris. So glad to see him back
My favorite too! Him and Chris exploring beautiful places while bickering is the recipe for a perfect video.
@@ahumanmerelybeing 💚💚 I swear I feel like I only live to see them together
I love how the traditional Japanese breakfast looked healthy and fresh and fancy and here I am in America eating a stack of sugar, flour, and butter covered in strawberries and syrup. I'd love to have traditional Japanese breakfast everyday but I don't think I could ever give up dessert for breakfast! Once again awesome video!
Ryotaro's perfect reciting of an airport greeting, with a slight sexual edge, followed up by Chris' "disappointment" comment. Comic genius. No voice breaks, despite how out-of-place it is, just perfectly smooth delivery.
It's spelt Ryotaro (sry to be that guy)

It's a Blade Runner reference. Tyrell corporations motto is "More Human Than Human"
Ryotaro smug and smirk face is iconic it actually refreshing to see thise again in one of your videos 😄
Glad to see Ryotaro again. Absolute love his vibe, you two are great:)
Ryotaro: *Breathes*
Chris: "My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined."
Ryotaro and his hidden jams are the essence.
Essence of Hidden Jam: grabs a jar of Jam from his coat pocket and shoves the entire contents down opponents throat
Chris, you look so refreshed and rested. We, your audience, are happy to see you like this!
the lofi beats in the background of this video are impeccable
Ryotaro: Hidden Gem
Chris: HiDdEn Jam?!
Uncle roger alert.. when he says jam
hey ur back Evil and some other dude took over you in the comments in the past few months
Oh is that how people get likes these days? Just type something that was said in the video. Original.
He did say jam tho…
I love how it says (Translate to English ) and just ads up space between the word and exclamation and Question mark
I love Ryotaro
❤ he is great
Chris I can't thank you enough for your great videos. These are relaxing to watch. When I am stressed with school and family problem I find your videos as ways of escapism. Thank you so much Chris and Ryotaro!
I love how amazing the video looks like in 4k, you can tell Chris really does his best at making his videos.
Chris: "Rytoro's hidden jam" A sentence I never want to say again.
Also Chris: proceeds to say hidden jam like 7 more times.
that's a very Chris thing to do.
We must protect Alex guys. She needs time to finish her noodles.
As a fellow Alex, I 100% agree
Chris, you have no idea how much pleasure your videos are providing to someone going through a hard time. Keep em coming!
This is easily my favourite episode so far, the temple is beautiful but that underground cyberpunk street looked incredible.
Yay, Ryotaro's back! I've missed him
8:34 Chris says "crikey that's sweet", Joey has made great progress in the counter-colonization of an englishman
Whenever I see an Abroad in Japan video pop up, I know I will love it and my urge to travel to Japan will grow.
Your videos are the best pieces of film of all time. They are so overwhelmingly well made and entertaining that I have to watch them in small doses in order to not be overwhelmed all the time. Very inspiring! Love every one of your videos. As an American who grew up in Japan, I hope to make videos about Japan some day that are at least 1/100th as good!
The day Chris complements Ryotaro is the day when pigs fly.
Funny I just got done watching Porco Rosso 😂😂
Alex caught on camera in Abroad in Japan! Love it!
Oh I LOVE Asakusa at night! Senso-ji and the pagoda and in the back scene modern Tokyo Skytree. Amazing. Thank you for this great video.
Great video Chris. Love seeing you, Alex and Ryotaro
Confucius say, never eat shady risottoro.
Shady risottoro actually sounds nice to me
Ryotaro: mispronounces "gem"
Chris: "So you have chosen death"
Just wanted to say youre one of my two all time favorite RUclipsrs. You're awesome and love the content! Keep up the good work Chris!
NEED longer videos. Love watching your videos after a busy week at work. It really helps me unwind.
Talking about how they FINALLY perfected eating being opposite hand dominant. Only to go for dessert and immediately reverting to old habits... Nice one guys
Ryotaro in the bath house looked like a NPC in a James bond game. 😂 Never a dull moment
Have been a fan and subscriber for a while now. Pretty sure you were the first RUclipsr I subscribed to. Still a huge fan. I just wanted to reach out and thank you for including the message about the need to support local businesses in Japan. It is true everywhere. If we do not keep these amazing places going, the pandemic will do damage much longer than it has to. Your balance between knowledge and entertainment is appreciated. Well done. Thank you. I have family that I visit in Tokyo as often as I can. I miss them and am anticipating seeing them again soon. Should I ever see you there, I will give you an actual thumbs up. Keep doing what you do, you make the world better. Thank you.
I cannot put into words how great this episode is and how much I enjoyed it and just appreciate all the amazing camera work and editing. I love this channel! 😍❤
Ryotaro's "How 'luxury' is that?" always a music in my ears
Truly like a magic
Theres something about these videos thats comforting, time goes by super fast when watching the videos and it really feels like something more than a travel video. These videos not only make me want to go to Japan they make me want to go to hiden treasures across the country and do something more authentic than just the regular tourist stuff. Highest quality stuff on RUclips and probably the best Japanese travel media outlet
Watching traveling videos when we are still on travel restrictions is so much pleasing. Can't wait to travel as freely as before the pandemic again. Love your video and thank you for sharing the fun with us.🥰
This is the district where I'll be staying for in two weeks time for a week! Very excited, thanks so much for this video!
I love how they were exclaiming about sitting in the correct positions then the very next place they went back to elbow bumping.
The shot at 4:56 is Godly, love the water dissipating the signage
I randomly stopped the video and saw your comment , my video stopped at 4:56
Ryotaro is a such a joy 🥲
Enjoyed the tour of Asakusa and revealing the really interesting things to do and eat and where to stay.
Chris: We’re entering somewhere Cyberpunk-y
Ryotaro: Look at that, we have Fortune telling, Hair salon, and some dodgy massage place
Ahh yes, the quintessentials
All that was needed is a place selling cloned snakes.
I always appreciate those rare times when we get to see the talented individuals behind the camera that help make these videos possible.
Your off the beaten trac episodes are some of your best episodes even with Ryotaro!
Way to approach Ryotaro's hidden jam with humility and finesse. Top-quality content.
Gotta say, this channel always delivers on the "vibe" of the places visited. It doesn't just feel like you watch a sweeping camera shot of an obvious tourist spot, while someone monotonously lists why it's so great.
It feels alive and real, creates a real longing for just visiting and both Chris and Ryotaro feel so down-to-earth, too. There's neither too much, nor too little focus on the humor or the places; it's just a well-balanced, enjoyable video.
Absolutely agree and the cinematography is top notch
Chris: "So, what are we doing today?"
Ryotaro: "You must be hungry"
Sly remark😂
The production value of your videos is insane, keep up the amazing work Chris!

I couldn’t shake the feeling of familiarity when i saw the inn from outside and then the rooms. Well, turns out my friends and i stayed in that exact inn 2 years ago. Was the best sleep i had in the entire trip, loved their futons! Wasn’t really expensive either if you were sharing a room.
Beautifully filmed by Alex, definitely not the slowest eater, just the most stylish.
When I visited japan two years ago I stayed in Asakusa for a week and it was absolutely amazing. Thank you for this great video, it brings back many memories of this place.

I've stayed in this part of Tokyo many times and love the area. Senso-ji at night is an amazing sight.
Love the candid convos and great humour in your voiceover!
I like how they made such a point about _finally_ sitting on the correct side when eating…and then go right back to the wrong sides come dessert time.
