    00:01:52 Number 13, by M. R. James
While researching church history in Denmark, Mr. Anderson notices that the inn where he is staying has no room numbered 13. Or does it...? One of the best known ghost stories by M. R. James, first heard read aloud at Christmas 1899 and subsequently published in 'Ghost Stories of an Antiquary' in 1904.
00:45:00 The Sealed Room, by Arthur Conan Doyle
A solicitor finds himself intrigued by a young man who lives alone in a huge mansion, with virtually no furniture and a mysterious room which is sealed up with wax... 'The Story of the Sealed Room' first appeared in the Strand Magazine in the September 1898 issue, as part of 'Round the Fire Stories'.
01:19:25 The Room in the Tower, by E. F. Benson
After many years of experiencing a strange and recurring dream, of an unseen, unidentified terror lurking in a room at the top of a mysterious house, our narrator is disturbed to find that his nightmare appears to be crossing over into real life... 'The Room in the Tower' first appeared in the January 1912 issue of Pall Mall Magazine.
01:58:54 The Red Room, by H. G. Wells
In H.G. Wells’s celebrated ghost story, an intrepid and self-confident young man resolves to spend the night in a room which is reportedly haunted by a malevolent spirit, determined to disprove the legend... 'The Red Room' first appeared in the March 1896 issue of 'The Idler'.
02:27:44 The Mystery of the Circular Chamber, by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace
"Something happens in this house, and no living soul knows what it is, for they who have seen it have never yet survived to tell the tale." Legend says that no-one survives the night in the circular room at the Castle Inn, where several unexplained deaths have been popularly attributed to "fright". 'The Mystery of the Circular Chamber' originally appeared in the June 1897 issue of Cassell's Magazine. It was the first in a series of stories to feature John Bell, Victorian adventurer and "professional exposer of ghosts".
The full series of Bell stories is available to listen on the channel here: • A Master of Mysteries ...
03:21:55 The Thing in the Upper Room, by Arthur Morrison
An unnamed horror lurks in the empty room on the top floor of an otherwise perfectly normal lodging house in Paris; no-one really seems to know what gave the room its evil reputation. But to Attwater, a young and impoverished English artist, the low rent seems worth the risk... 'The Thing in the Upper Room' first appeared in the May 1910 edition of 'The Story-teller'.

Thank you for your rendering of these several stories by some of the best writers of ghost and horror stories. When first I heard you reading, I
pictured you wearing a three piece tweed suit smoking cap and rimless spectacles reading from a heavy leather covered book and sitting in a wing chair before a log fire and a pipe in your hand. As usual your reading is impeccable. Thank you Simon.

Excellent compilation, SImon! I got ghost story collections by James, Benson and Le Fanu thanks to your channel. Such rich language it is and absolutely should be preserved as much as possible. Looking forward to whatever tales you may bring in the coming year as you always pick the classiest ones imo.

Simon Stanhope is for me, one of the best narrators of this decade. Thanks for all your good work Simon!
Right up there with Jonathan Cecil, Hugh Fraser and David Suchet for my listening ear. Easy to listen to,
no sudden loud noise, just good even reading. Modulation, timbre, rhythm all A+. Cheers

It always gives me a little thrill when these authors reference each other. There's little doubt that Morrison's 'The Thing in the Upper Room' is making a call-out to Wells's 'The Red Room' with the 'story of a room haunted by fear'.

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  4 месяца назад +1

Thanks Simon. Your comment prompted me to realise something... of all these stories, Number 13 stands out, inasmuch as it's the only one in which the narrative doesn't actually take us inside the eponymous room. All the action takes place in number 12! Anyway, glad to know you enjoyed it.

    You, friend Simon.
    Ian Gordon of Horrorbabble,
    Jasper L'Strange of Encrypted,
    Mort, of Mortis Media,
Otis Jiry of Chilling Tales for Dark Nights, as a Canadian/American voice,
And as for the Ladies, I have been quite entertained by both Miss Worm, and Bethena!
If you all could assemble, and find that you "mesh" properly, and "spark off one another", you would be one of the FINEST "Radio Acting Companies" ever assembled, at least to THIS American!!!
(I must, at this point admit that I'm reacting to your post, Simon, about a collaboration between yourself and Ian Gordon of Horrorbabble, as mentioned in another video, which I seem to have more-or-less "lost" around here somewhere, and thus do I post it HERE! Cheers, Simon!)

    you say. :
short stories a hundred maybe more,
My opinion on that. : I've been listening to them for over a year. And it's way clear over a 100. But so I think you need to change what you say that recording, I would say 200 maybe more.
Well, now I would go back to listen to the beginning of what you're about to explain.😊😊

I've not counted recently, actually! I think it's probably closer to 150 but I must double check when I have time. The video count isn't quite reliable because there are some re-releases, some stories which are serialised across multiple episodes (like A Christmas Carol) and of course a number of multi-story compilations, like this one
