Their 1968 studio album, Days of Future Passed, that this song was the finale was one of the very first progressive rock concept albums that used orchestral elements as an underlying theme and bound the rock songs together in the metaphorical dawn to night of a our cycles of life. It's a masterpiece that should be experienced as a whole from start to finish when you have time for serious contemplation.

One of the greatest songs of all-time! It is amazing to think this song/album came out way back in 1968! Justin Hayward is fantastic!

I first heard The Moody Blues and Justin Hayward's voice in the early 70s. Fifty years later and countless songs through the decades, and I've yet to hear another voice that sounds like Justin's. It's truly unique and special.

The first time my husband saw them was in the 70s without an orchestra and he said it was a bit disappointing. He had the albums and without that background music that he had grown to love, it was just okay. Then he saw them twice in the 90s both times with full symphony orchestra accompanying and he said it was just magical!!!

*sigh* On that stage, at that time in the '70's - - we had only three Altec Lansing microphones. I distributed them on the stage, each sitting on paper towels. The music was poor. I was so upset. Eventually a couple years later, when I was dating my (future) wife, we started constructing duplicates of the Hartley speakers. They were big. Ultimately, you will see them in the 1st 'Back to the Future' movie. Now, I am only minor distressed the BatF movie showed three different speaker systems. Mine WAS THERE! - - - Yes, I can understand that audio for a live performance of Moody Blues in the '70's - - was inferior. I could write more, but then I will get horrible messages. I don't want to read them. I'm 72 years old, and I don't care about negativity

This is one of the few romanic songs that men have a stronger emotional reaction to than women. I suppose every man out there who has ever loved and lost, this is their anthem.

Just a bit of info for you, the London philharmonic orchestra there were 106 playing in the background at the concert and came from around the world, with 14 different nationalities.

It is not the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing here but the London ‘Festival’ Orchestra.
That was a non existent orchestra consisting of session musicians and made up for this song.
      Still very good.

The white satin refers to a set of satin sheets his girlfriend gave him shortly before they broke up 💔 Don't worry, she came back and, shortly after they got married and have been together ever since.
