Wow. So many problems here in the late 90s. First the bmw deformation was considerable. The tube head airbag thank god was redone. Hardly provides any protection for front occupants. Meanwhile, explorer airbag fired so late, probably caused injuries. I can’t ! Thank god we have learned…
The suv was built higher than a normal car, so the rocker part can't defend the cabin, only the B-pillar and the doors protecting the passengers in this special case. The setup looks like the worst case scenario. If the impact car bumper is lower than the rocker can help to protect. Or if the impact car hits a bit forward or backward than the other pillars can help to protect. In my opinion. Side crash is always very dangerous, because there is no collision zone.
The ford explorer of that Era failed side impact crash test miserably too in that the b pillar completely caved in moreover because it is higher up above in terms of the suspension (It's higher than the bmw) it had little damage in the front as shown in this crash test
It's tough odds. The Ford is very heavy, it has a stiff front and it hits very high up, where all cars are more structural vulnerable. Think either all people should drive trucks or cars. They are not very compatible...
Ford Suvs and trucks from that era had a front end rock solid. I once saw a 2006 Explorer that went trough a block wall. Only headlamps and grill were damaged, the engine was running like nothing happened
@@runepedersenDK Yeah, it seems like driving a truck is pretty much a non-negotiable on todays roads. Most cars are crossovers, SUV, and trucks and if you can't beat'em, join'em
The tubular airbags did nothing to protect the head. My parents had this era 7 series - it was the first to have head and side airbags at the time, so I guess it was one of the safest cars at the time. That car always felt very solid so my mom never wanted to get rid of the car. I had to convince her that modern cars are safer with more safety features. After watching this crash test, the bmw safety features now seem so antiquated - I’m so glad they finally got rid of that bmw.
The ford explorer vs the ford focus would be more appropriate lol😆 🤣the ford explorer completely caved in the b pillar of the ford focus in that crash test. Neither is safe!!!!

But the idiots still claim 'old cars are safer'

Deformation to BMW didn’t even show signs of stopping until the tires of the explorer hit the body of the beamer!
Heavy and high car vs. a normal car. Nothing surprising here.

Wow, I assumed the BMW would handle that hit better

Its the 90s..the driver was a part of the deformation zone :D
Although if the Explorer rolled the roof would have collapsed like it was made of cardboard 😂. Can’t have it all I guess.

I mean these cars were engineered in the early 90s, didn’t expect better. There’s a ton more cars way worse than this.
What a shame, that is pretty much a collector car today, stupid to get rid of it over that just get another car.
What's far worse is people thinking that 80's, 70's or even 60's cars are safe. So stupid
Водителю и пассажиру Форда явно не поздоровилось,получили нокаут подушкой по голове.Хотя в Е39 ситуация не лучше
But thats because they place the dummies way too close to the steering wheel. Anyway, HIC is quite low and far from being critical.
The airbag of the Explorer deployed so late tho...

Bye Bye if the passengers are over 30
No wonder why they crashed look at the fords alignment.... the bmw never stood a chance the ford came it sideways lol
:DD I first thought the rear axle detached
