My mother made this every Easter and I love it so much it is my favorite. She would also make the best wheat pies. She was a phenomenal cook and baker. Her and my aunt her sister would stay in the kitchen all night before a Holiday cooking up a storm. The baking started at least a few days or a week before. Love your Nonna she is adorable.
When I was a child (50 years ago) my neighbors used to give us some of their Easter pie as my mother did not make it. I always loved it so much, along with their stuffed squid and spaghetti they would share. Unfortunately I was in hospital for kidney stone this past Sat-Sun, but did get home in time to make the ham dinner yesterday evening. They had to wait, but it was good! . Today I am making this wonderful dish. It is in the oven now - late is better than never. Your Nonna is adorable and the two of you make a nice team. Keep up the good work Rossella!
This brought back so many memories of my Italian Mama. Every Easter we would cut up all the meats and make this. My Mother in law was the greatest cook and taught me all her Italian recipes.❤️Miss my Mama.
My dad’s side of the family were from Naples, Italy and the Easter Pie was made on Good Friday and eaten on Easter Sunday as you stated. My maiden name is Pasqua. God Bless on Easter and always. Thank you for the video.
This brings back so many memories of growing up surrounded by my Italian family. So many are gone now and my children are grown, but I am making this recipe this Easter!! Yum!! Thank you for this delicious recipe! I agree that your Nonna should have more speaking time. She seems so sweet, but we don't get to hear her very much. You do a very nice job explaining everything.
She really reminds me of my own grandma, who (very generously) gave me her own recipe before her passing. She made it for really any special occasion, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and visits from her grandkids. My dad gets very sentimental whenever I make it for him. (Incidentally, it's always been "pizzagan" in my family.) Thank you for sharing this - her recipe is slowly evolving into my own, and I love seeing how other people do it.
It makes me sad to think these traditions are dying...I haven't had a pie like this on Easter for many years. My grandmother used to make the best one, and she used to let me help decorate the top of the pie crust. So many good memories.
gridcaster not dying we still make it we even make it on Christmas and Thanksgiving and Easter of course. We are responsible for passing down traditions so let’s not let them die.
You gals are terrifico! Love love how you use the American Italiano lingo correctly, you use it as it’s supposed to be used, WITH the vowel at the end! Belllllisssimo ! The Pizza Rustica recipe and how you share it with us, of course rocks, too!!! Graci Graci ! Happy Easter 🐇 ✝️🐣🙏♥️
Always a tradition. Now that my parents are gone, my Nana and all aunts and uncles, it's very sad - my sisters don't seem to want it. 😢 Meanwhile I miss it. I learned how to make it in the 70s from my mom and can whip it up easily. I've even cut some of the fat from it over the years. I add a little cooked sausage to it as well. I'm going to make it for MYSELF and freeze pieces of it. What I love in yr version is that the dough is same kind...a thick, heavy egg dough that stands up to that amazing, heavy filling. The egg/lard (I use butter) dough is a MUST. Thank you for making me think of my family and Easter so fondly. My sister is making Easter dinner today. It will certainly be and Italian meal; but no Pizzagain or pizzarustica. I even offered to make it. ❤
Hi Rossella. This looks simply divine! Your nonna is adorable. I don't comment much but I need to say thank you for sharing all the nonna videos. I am a young nonna myself & hope that my grand kiddies remember my recipes that I cook for them. Thank you :)
I have to say I just found your RUclips channel and I love it. I love your Nonna! She reminds me so much of my Nonna. How much I miss her. It's been over 33 years since she passed but this channel brought back such beautiful memories of my Nonna trying to teach me some things. Wish I payed more attention and gotten her recipes. But this will help so much. God bless you and your beautiful Nonna!
rosella is piggybacking off of her nonna to make a name for herself. her nonna is a pawn in her attempt to become a celebrity chef. it's pathetic on rosella's part
Don't be a putz. She's making sure all those Nonna recipes get out there rather than getting lost to the world. And, if you watched this much, you'd know she has lots of different Nonne on, and each one gets to tell their story. And if they want to talk, they get to talk. She's under time constraints on these videos, for one thing, and has to keep things moving along and, for another, not everyone likes to talk a lot. So, just enjoy the recipes and don't be such a hater.
My mom and I use to make 9 pies that was a lot of work by hand then my husband bought me the kitchen aid thank God what a pleasure .we use to ship Some pies out thank you nonna you brought memories God bless you and your family
Besides being Italian & Beautiful.? You can cook to.? Thanks Rossella,For sharing this great Recipe. My Grandmother,? Did the Dough all by hand.? i remember watching her growing up.? She was Neopolitian
I was thinking about the fact that you american people call it pizzagaina, while in Italian dialects it’s written “pizza chiena-pizza piena”. And then I realized that there’s a very simple reason for that... I thought of all the people that first came from Italy, and how poor and (some) young and uneducated they were, that they didn’t bring written recipes or the exact names of things, but they just brought their love of home and their original cuisines. So names like pasta fazool and pizza gaina sound like that just because they actually sounded like it to english speakers or the second generation italian americans that later wrote all those recipes to save tradition ❤️
My mother did the same, and she never used mortadella - she used the dried italian sausage, salami and prosciutto, from memory she also used a lot more cheese and more eggs in it too. But I guess they all have their various ways of making it, but I loved hers because it was really cheesy and the italian sausage takes it to another level in my opinion.
Can ricotta salada be used instead of basket cheese? My northern Italian grandmother used sharp provalone , no mortadella. Soppressata, prosciutto, ricotta and mozzerella.
+Rossella's Cooking with Nonna absolutely Rossella. I got her into your sites. She loves your Nonna I've learned a lot from both of you and thank you for that. I got the best of both worlds here. My mom from Italy and you and your Nonna. Lol 😂🇮🇹
+Rossella's Cooking with Nonna your welcome. I have a friend Tina who owns an Italian catering business. But. Also makes daily meals to sell. She's been taking care of me with the Broccoli Rabe since my mom has been in Florida. Lol I message her and BOOM. Next day huge bowl to take home. 😂 to bad I didn't live closer I could say to your Nonna. Can you make me braciole Nonna? Pleeeease my mommy is in Florida. Lol
Mmm must be really delicious!, here in Argentina we make something like that, but its more flat, like a pie if you will. its called "tarta". Love your recipes! Greets!
Nonna should have a bigger role in these videos. Also Rossella is talking so loud I had to turn my phone down more than half way because it sounds like she’s shouting. Otherwise cool recipes they look amazing
Always Good Friday but we made all cheese for Friday and after 12 noon Holy Saturday we could eat the pies with the meat. My grandmother used lard, my mother used Crisco in the dough
I live in an area with very few Italians. My go-to description for people who've never heard of it (I.E. everybody is a big, boisterous, hairy-chested Italian quiche.
It reminds me of being at my grandmother’s with my mom. Grandmother was just fluttering about trying to tell Mom what to do with her pie crust. Mom told her to go watch tv. As Grandmother left, she had her parting shot, “Good luck with your pie crust.”
Fabulous. That buttery dough, I'm sure it's a million times more delicious than just yeast-raised pizza dough. I gotta make this recipe, it's June, but who cares?!

What a thoughtful and charming observation. I do like the way you put it, and I agree! Buona Pasqua!
I put some sausage in mine. Great recipe
9:40 She's still pissed about you breaking that roller....
Lollll I was thinking the same thing.
Just the way I remember it. Mmmmm🍽
Can ricotta salada be used instead of basket cheese?
My northern Italian grandmother used sharp provalone , no mortadella. Soppressata, prosciutto, ricotta and mozzerella.
Can't wait. My mom has been in Florida and is coming back on Sunday and on Monday she's making this for me. 😁😁😁

Hi I love this recipe! Does it freeze well?
Yes it does!
Growing up Italian my grandmother & auntie called it Easter pie
Nonna should have a bigger role in these videos. Also Rossella is talking so loud I had to turn my phone down more than half way because it sounds like she’s shouting. Otherwise cool recipes they look amazing
Rosella is nerve Racking, Bravo for Nona!!!
So true 100%she is shouting😊

You should have let Grandma do more, she's just standing there
Her grandmother begins to be more and more active in videos as the time passes and lets her be more comfortable

Grandma is still mad she broke her family chair leg rolling pin
I agree
ive been watching your recipes all day i like yours the best but why dont you bake the bottome crust first? is it just preference?
Brandon Otanjah it's not really necessary for this recipe. The crust bakes together with the fillinh
RO, don't you have a food processor. Well I love your videos. Grazie ciao franco
I'm a rookie...what do you call the device you made the pie in?? Can I find it on Amazon?? Thanks!!
It's a springform pan. (Looks about 9 inches, a common size for many recipes you use springform pans.)
Can you use pizza dough instead?
Me and my sisters would fight over grandma's pizza rustica..
So every Easter grandma would make each of us our own pie so we wouldn't fight..
Loved it
+Debra Delesky Have you made it yet? www.cookingwithnonna.com/italian-cuisine/nonnas-pizza-rustica.html
Your nonna is so sweet!
I can see how nona is really excite about her dish.
Always Good Friday but we made all cheese for Friday and after 12 noon Holy Saturday we could eat the pies with the meat. My grandmother used lard, my mother used Crisco in the dough

Can you tell me what quantity of flour, butter etc as I don't think you've given these amounts! Many thanks

We have this every year for Easter! The only difference that we had as we use Locatelli cheese in ours and ours didn’t have a crust
What is Locatelli cheese?

Thanks for this Laura, it was so great! My favorite part was when you pinched the lattice piece on. HOME COOKING!!! Not perfect, just delicious!
Is the basket cheese the same as ricotta salata?

My family always called it a cold cut pie
Feel so bad when Nonna goes to help and doesn’t get admired :( such a good video besides that!
Could this be called a quiche too?Thanking you
Similar to what my family makes for Easter but we use sausage, pepperoni and ham and call it “sausage pie”
My family is from lazio. atina to be exact they also call it pizza rustica!!! Also hilarious that’s it’s killing her to just watch you 😂
Video grandioso per tutto quello che significa. W l Italia w gli states
There is no"W" in Italian.
Keep everything keep every Holiday. Just give me that pie. & i will die a Happy 😃 man. Trust me best thing on this planet. RIP. MoM. ❤️
No pizza dough?
Lord hear our prayers 🙏
He is risen indeed.
