I’m a Merchant Marine and a lot of these container ships are maintained on a shoestring, the crew is very low paid, the owners have a habit of cutting corners.
I have seen mechanical failures on other vessels that are like this one.

If this happened at 1am ish, who do they "think" they are "rescuing" after treading water for 8+ hours in those temps? Just call it a recovery mission, same for the vehicles under water and anyone whos been trapped in them.
Never know. I saw a story where a boat capsized & sank & a guy lived for 4 days in an air pocket. Another guy made it a week under rubble after a building collapse.
air bubbles exist in vehicles. unconscious victims can stay alive in a submerged vehicle for up to 20 hours. this isnt a submarine that was crushed. this is shallow moving water. you obviously know dick all about water rescue.

You're also "assuming" their vehicles were "water tight" and even if they were, you'd use up you air supply in a short amount of time and suffocate. If there was more than 1 occupant, it would go twice as fast.

The bridge looks like it was a tinker toy....
It actually was a very elegant truss bridge. It was more like a giant erector set. I drove over it dozens of times in the 1970s. It was a very old bridge and had exceeded its design life several times over. Politicians don't like to pay for proper maintenance nor replacement before a collapse.
Yes a bridge should be able to handle more than that. What a piece of trash bridge, they should have sections that aren't that extremely dependent on each other, this bridge looks like it was made with tooth pics

@@tbenjamin8348 This. Ships usually use electric steering gears, if there is any short in the way to those motors, most steering will be lost. That being said, its still frustrating that it was set on a course to the bridge.

There were also tub boats to escort ships in and out.
@@Roboticus_Prime_RC Tug boats were used to leave the dock but SOP was a release once in open water. The malfunction knocked out their steering, they dropped the portside anchor and went into full reverse to stop (note the black smoke) but it was too late.
@beaux2585 I think the prop walk in full reverse was the nail in a bunch of coffins. Probably too late anyway but rookie mistake.

Worse Bridge collapse!? Did we forget about the Sunshine Skyway bridge or the bridge over the St. Paul river in Minnesota?
Considering the distance to shore this is likely worse. In a river you have a chance to get to shore. Not so much in this case in cold weather and at 1 am in the morning when searching is harder if even started quickly.more people are likely to be on this bridge with the length of it.

When the bridge is rebuilt the bridge bases need to be made larger so no ship will be able to touch the bridge support.
They will name it the George Floyd Memorial Bridge in honor of saint George, The patron saint of drugs and crime.
Perhaps a manned draw bridge would be wise.
In a 1 mile stretch, it had 2 pile ons, almost half a mile apart, and they couldn't manage to miss it.

It opened my eyes, as I lived in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area, when the I35 Bridge Collapsed about 2009. That bridge was not hit by a ship, but the weight of the equipment of construction workers caused it during a late rush hour traffic. My heart goes out to all the families and individuals caught up

SOP, tugs were used to move it off the dock and into open water before disengaging.
It’s not incredible to watch it collapse. It’s gut wrenching! There’s no telling how many lives were lost and how many will be changed by this.

Harbor pilots do not PYSICALLY man the helm of the vessel, they coordinate the vessels port entry travel docking and departure with the cooperation of the Captain and helmsman. They give guidance/direction on currents, weather conditions etc. in aiding a vessel in and out of the port and harbor. There are very few places globally where the pilot actually takes physical control of a vessel travelling through a port, harbor or channel one such place is the Panama canal. The mention of the harbor pilots being on board sounds like someone trying to cover the Captain and crews ass, and this certainly wouldn't be an investigation led by the FBI as they lack the expertise in this situation to determine cause that would fall to the NTSB who are neither shown nor mentioned in this coverage.

Things like ships and planes can be run by most people when things go well, but only exceptional people can handle them when something goes wrong. The days of finding those people are quickly coming to an end.

@@darkbehiI wouldn’t but I used to be a teacher. Bridge building projects are pretty standard and straightforward, and when one spot falls the entire structure fails. To build a bridge like you described would require 10 times the resources, and pilones too close together to allow for barge traffic essentially closing the river.
There are a lot of 5 minute or less RUclips videos about bridge construction if you want to understand it better.

All those people who fell in the water, the collapse must have been terrifying. ☹️ My thoughts are with them and their families.
The fact that they won’t admit that this is a recovery and not a rescue is astonishing. The waters are freezing temperatures which induces hypothermia which leads to death.
I think they have two stages. They will often do "rescue" first until they feel there is no chance of a survivors, then they will slow the pace and do "recovery".
Part of that is the mentality of the workers because once they go to "recovery" they don't have to be as careful when searching.

Your story is crap, the bridge was rammed by a container ship, then it collapsed. Divers recover, not rescue. Intentional ignorance??
So if a small emp burst were to hit the boat before it crosses a bridge it would be a loose cannon?
The lights were still on just before it hit and the ship was already very close to the support. EMPs take out everything, including light bulbs. The ship was either damaged and out of control, not being supervised at all and it just ran right into it, or someone did it intentionally. I don't think this was intentional, so it's likely one of the other scenarios. Tragic.

That bridge construction was no suitable for that place, that was a problem waiting to happen.

I was on this bridge like two days before this happened delivering a steel column for my boss .. so crazy. But this bridge is super scenic and nice when driving on it. Absolutely amazing construction
