    Just ran across this video. To lose a child anywhere along life's path is devastating. My condolences to the family. I thought that one could make segments of contrasting wood by rough turning the outside but matching the inside and gluing together. Next would be turning the outside and prepping for a lid of some sort. Will take time to watch the entire video in the future.

    I'm sorry for your Loss. My Father passed away on 11 June this year. I'm not an experienced turner (I'm a cabinet maker who's just started turning). I opted for a an oblong box, about the size of a shoe box. Luck would have it that it was the right size. An interesting calculation on the size required. What I did find was that my father lost a considerable amount of weight in the few months before his passing, so if it is for your friend, I suppose that if you size it now in advance, then maybe at the time of her calling she will not need such a big Urn. It may have failed but I learnt from your experience. Thank you Mike.

    Congratulations on "video of the week" they video was a good comprehensive lesson on making an urn. Good tips all the way through. I was actually thinking about doing a video on making the female insert from some 2 part cast resin. As your insert was larger, it is more difficult to find good thread chasing wood that is big enough. So your technique is a good option. And you are a good man for showing that spit at the end-sorry about that. Regards, Sam

    Mike,
    As everyone else condolences on the loss of your son Brian--I am sure he will be in your heart always!
    I wonder how it would go with making two bowls and then joining them with epoxy to get the final urn shape? Since I have the small excelsior lathe I am thinking of doing this for my urn and also for my wifes. And I think I will use the pre made brass threaded inserts as I don't have your level of skill with threading. God Bless you and your family!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 лет назад

      A hollow form with two sides can be an effect approach. The challenge is making a shape and fitting the ends together like a box with a recess on one and a tenon on the other. The other challenge is grain match and disguising the joint.

    .
    It is difficult to find a large tree that cold be quartered vertically and have enough wood to turn this large. Alternatives could include segmented bowls, built up to the height required, or gluing lumber to obtain a blank that will be large enough for the urn. Glue ups offer the possibility of celebrating wood grain, especially with complimentary or contrasting wood. I felt your disappointment at the huge crack - could the urn be recovered by sawing it in half and gluing another piece of wood in the middle?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 лет назад

      I guess that is an option adding wood but I would never be happy with the look. Burn pile and try again. I was given a huge piece of Bradford Pear so that is in the future.
