  • Last year, we here at Hemmings introduced you to our new RUclips series, REHAB. The idea was simple - take a stock older vehicle and breathe some new life into it so that when complete, it’s in better shape than when it arrived. Our first subject was a 1987 Chevrolet IROC Camaro - it was a good car, but with a spun bearing and some soggy suspension, it needed work. The result when we completed it was an IROC that was improved in every way.
However, this is season II, and with that comes a new car - and by new we mean a 32-year-old Ford Mustang GT complete with a 5.0L V8 under the hood and a lot of room for improvement. But where our IROC was set up for corners, our Fox body will be prepped to run down the 1,320, but in a style that’ll make you think it’s the late 1980s all over again!
Folks, welcome to Fox Body REHAB!

In the 1970s I had a Mustang II. It was a four-speed with a four-cylinder engine and a lot of fun to drive.
The re-introduction of the mustang in 1979 turned me off. It was a square bodied atrocity
I was an older dad and in 2014 my 17 year old son bought a 1991 LX convertible (I was 65 years old at the time, lol).
He and I worked on it together, making various upgrades. In 2019 he decided he needed a newer vehicle and so I bought the LX convertible from him.

I was hoping to do a stroker 351W since the original engine is long gone, but in searching for parts I found a 1968 Olds 442 with a switch pitch torque converter and variable duration lifters on an aftermarket cam for $4,500...couldn't pass that up :)
with the rust in the Must' , i'm thinking Capri bubble fenders might be in the cards just for something different (1986 was the last year for the Gt to not have the side trim that added weight). I'll be happy with a 5 speed (the T5 in it now isn't original) but the ultimate goal is a long distance traveler (i do car shows in NE, NJ, NY) that runs low octane pump gas (hence a stroker over a power adder) and AC and CC. My 442 is a base model with no AC, and after an hour of driving in the dog days of summer i'm ready to park it :)
I had a turbo t'bird before this, so i want something that won't beat me up as far as the suspension is concerned. something that can get me out of trouble faster than i got in it--after a few hours of driving, the white line fever sets in :)
thankfully the Fox body has a plethora of parts to choose from, and many are at used car prices. will be fun to watch how this series goes forward (i've been to the hemmings cruise nights once or twice, if you're in that area, check out the Gillette Stadium thursday night shows at Bass Pro. it's a bit of a travel for you from VT, but the Mass Cruisers car club claims to get 2,000 cars so it'll be worth it for your guys).
