This was the Kings palace, many structures like this existed throughout the Kingdom of “Ruanda-urundi”. King Mutara III was assassinated by the Belgians and his heir exiled to the US, dying a King with no country. The monarchy can be traced by written record over 1000 years to 1000 AD but oral history records it to years B.C.

@@cynthiamclaglen5687 Dear Cynthia unfortunately this was the case. The Belgians found it hard to get their grip on Rwanda. Particularly with the Rwandan monarch in place, it was hard to exert rule over highly established levels of decentralised administration. So they set out to device the old “divide and conquer”. The French later took over and trained the Hutu government and militia to perpetuate the genocide.
I finally realized watching this, that I literally go into a trance whenever I watch African dance... I don't know how but I felt at peace and wound up at the same time with him... with them all, and I was mesmerized.
Guillaume Rusengo Thank you for identifying him. Butera was a amazing dancer. I wish this scene was longer and we saw more of all of the dancers. And the landscape is utterly beautiful.
My goodness!! Goosebumps all over me.... Especially after setting my eyes on our historic Intore dancer; #Butera_bwa_Nturo!! I have always been seeing his pictures but now seen him perform 👏👏👏. My culture, my pride!!
It was very thoughtful of the Film maker to include such a beautiful dance . The African continent had and has a rich cultural heritage. But for this great item, I wouldn't have known this fact half a century ago.
This is beautiful. So much was lost from the African continent. It's down to the modern generation to restore what was lost. The four giants are totally awesome.
So good to find this on RUclips! I can remember having to sit through the entire film, just to watch this part -- tremendous! In her recording of 'The Jungle Line', Joni Mitchell samples the Burundi Warrior Drums; I think maybe there's a connection? 🙏🏼🌹🙏🏽
Back in the 60's, albeit before my time, there was a popular dance called "The Watusi", in the US. I am watching the film now. The elephants getting shot, and the native getting killed is sad, but overall the film is interesting. For the most part, it seems respectful of the continent.
This is an original Tutsi dance. Has since become a Rwandan dance in the name of unification. But it is a dance of the Tutsi tribe originally! And that is a historical fact!

Even Blacks in Africa have this infatuation with blond wigs but this time it's the men. Is this where it all started? But I love the dance moves and I believe the dancers after having seen themselves on video no longer have to wonder why their audiences have looked so captivated all these years.
The blonde wigs are culturally trying to mimic a lions mane. It’s the cultural dance in Rwanda. Where the Tutsi were a ruling class during the monarchy error.
As others have pointed out its to mimick the mane of a lion, these ones are overly long i think for the dance, while originally they were shorter and kind of stayed up instead of falling to the back making the warrior seem taller and more intimidating.
I don't think that I have ever seen a more graceful beautiful and powerful dance in my Life.
I recommend you watch Saturday Night Fever
