David - I love that you are the only youtuber who cares to pay for the real song. Just for that, you are super cool. On a side note: Sarah was initially introduced as “a friend”. If I am reading this right, there might be something more going on. If this is correct, DEFINITELY KEEP THIS ONE. Smart, fun, willing to haul parts around. Perfect. Go, go, go. EDIT: timing, plugs or wires? You have certainly been through the options and fixed it already. I have faith. You gotta have faith.
M539 has been battling a very similar looking Bosch fuel injection system on an e21 BMW. Might be worth checking out. Glad to see a classic come back to life.
I am an old car mecanick in south Sweden,, and have workt a lot off all models off Volvo cars !! It is great you like this fantastisc cars !! The are bullit safe in order off reabiliti and performance !! Only rust kan stop a Volvo !! Sorry for mine bad englihs!! But think you understod anyway !! Keep uo your good work 👍👍
Ah, the good old 245DL! I had 2 of them, I love ‘em. Built like a tank with that massive bumper, soooo comfortable, nice high driving position for all round visibility, and (if well maintained) ultra reliable too. So stable, maybe the sheer weight helped! On standard rims it was also good in snow, maybe due to the weight concentration. I used to pull a horse trailer with mine, effortlessly. And on long runs, so relaxing. I’d be happy to drive one every day again right now if I found one in good shape.
That's a car from my very early childhood, dad had to replace it as it was very well used (for good reason, very reliable) but scrapped it after some 3-4 years as he wasn't the most particular on maintenance.
Congrats! And thanks for saving the OG 240. My old '76 245DL was probably the best car I ever had. I wish that my circumstances had allowed me to keep it.
Damn you're persistent. But just get the old waxy fuel out of or through the system and that old beauty will roll again. I must say that if that Volvo is an unusual model with rare fuel injection and other weird features then you, David, are best qualified to sort out the details and make it run. Also it cleaned up surprisingly well after removing all the junk from the cabin. Looking forward to further rescue stages. Cheers
My father-in-law had one of these and my boss in the Gas Industry , very much a statement back in the day here in the UK that you were someone....love the Pink Floyd in the background , clearly you have taste my friend.
I have only ever worked on one 240 with the B20 engine. Glad to see you revived one. Change those old injector hoses and get a fire extinguisher. It will ruin your day fast when one lets go. I successfully put out my 142E when a hose blew but it was scary for a couple of minutes. Good luck!
I had my 1983 Volvo 244 running last time in 2001 May. It slept over 20 years in a barn. I had it done with my son. And about a week ago it passed road test and it is now a driveable survivor. My son has a LS-swap in his mind.... Some 400 hp is going to make a difference...
That engine sounds healthy! Good job fixing that pump.👍 Some fresh and a bottle of injector cleaner will make it run even better. The injector cleaner will clean the pump, the fuel dizzy and injectors. But may also dislodge old crud in the tank so prepare to change fuel filter multiple times. Also, maybe put all new fuel hoses in because the old ones are not ethanol resistent. Same for any seals inside the fuel dizzy. Replace those with green HVAC seals.
Love the work you are doing. I never owned a 240 but currently own an 850r its always a work in progress. I recommend that when you do get to put fresh gas in the car put in some Redline Fuel system cleaner. The cleaner will break down a ton of the varnish in the tank, lines. It will also help lube up that fuel pump and clean it even more. Plus it will remove carbon and varnish in the injectors, valves, and inside the cylinders. I would recommend filling it up halfway and adding a full bottle. For an old car like that, I would do it 2 or 3 times and you should notice a huge difference. Also, a good idea to install an inline filter if you can.
The era ever God 🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️ God bless you all and your family ♥️♥️♥️ life is good to spend holiday season with family ♥️♥️♥️♥️ priceless trager golden family ♥️ life
David, i had a 76 245 .. be sure when u get the tail light get the 245 one... they look very similar but are not interchangable.. yours is the 245- the reverse light is set higher on the 145. also original seats in mine where vinyl...great to see you saving it. i have not seen very many early cars in many years
My 145 with the 20B Motor and twin Strombergs looked so simple in comparison. Can’t believe how the engine has been buried under all the fuel injection accessories etc.
Gosh this video reminds me so much of working on my 242 back when I was 17. There's something about the early ones I love they look better the crappier they are. The early colors are so much better along with them having single stage and they just faded instead of flaking. The chrome really ties it all together well. I want to make my 93 245 have chrome windows but I'm scared it might come out terrible
I had one , same Green colour body , same Brown interior , same year , in England , my single carb version was much simpler to work on than that fuel injection , but the Wet English climate got to the body in the end .
Hah, you sound just like me when I try to be a mechanic! "Sounds pretty easy!" Two seconds later: "Where do we start even??" I also love the name -- my '04 XC90 became "Dew" like "Mildew" after I rescued her from three years of sitting with water inside from a leaky sunroof. Similar sentiment here!
They can still be found in decent shape! I'm still driving my stalwart old beater of an '88 245. Learned to drive in it at 18 and 20 years later, it's still my ride-or-die. And after driving us and our last load of crap 1300 miles from Southern California to North Texas, it became the daily driver for both of us. Husband bought another car, but sadly totalled it last month, so here we are with ol' "Constance" as our only vehicle once again. They're just built different 💯💙
I think it's both fantastic and super weird that we find or make words for almost anything... But I must admit i like the word rickroll better than interrobang.
the b20F is the most rare engine for the volvo 240 even beating the turbo intercooler model. when you bought a volvo 245 new you could choose between a b21 without AC and all the other accesories, and most people chose the b21 for some more power so the b20F is really unusual on the 240. i can tell you there is only 1 car with that engine registerd in sweden because we did not even get the injection model we only had carburator or mechanical injetion. so the only cars with the b20F are car made for the US that did not make it over there
The earliest 240 cars were built for the UK market. I had one. It was registered 16th December 1974. The chassis number had lots of zeros and ended something like 600. It was a B21A 245DL. The gearknob was wider and flatter than later cars. The gear linkage frame was part of the gearbox and it had a very small throw to the point it was similar to 1990-on TVRs. The stalk switches had a triangular cross section. It was a cream colour with red cloth interior. 90mph or so top speed. It only did 24mpg (imperial). It did not change after changing the carburettor fuel metering needle. I think the wipers were also the wrong way round. I think it was some years later Volvo made RHD wiper linkages. It was super reliable. The same 8" Bosch headlamps as the 164 were great and it whistled. People forget early 240s whistled until the A pillar seals were redesigned. Happy memories.
In terms of the gas tank in the car, the early 240s were part of a NHTSA recall which called for the replacement to a newer design. You might be able to check with your local Volvo dealer to see if that was ever done on your wagon during its history. My 1975 242DL has the newer style set up with the in-tank pump and would recommend having that if you are able.
Nice! I like that its a k-jet car, its not a bad system. And of you have issues with the fuelpump in the future it Will run fine with the newer style pump from cars with lh systems!
Dear David Bello and Sarah. 👍👌👏 Uuuuh, at last it's wrenching time again! And WOW, even with two VOLVO enthusiasts/specialists. The engine sounds healthy and I hope that you will not have too much respectively more issues because of the old deteriorated gasoline. Unfortunately it's pretty cold for working on cars outside. Hope you two stay healthy. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part about Fun Gus. I thought the vehicles name would be a bit like Ivys name because it's green too. Something like Ivyng or Irving I guessed. ;-) 😁 As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you. Post Scriptum: Channel Budget Buildz rescued/repaired/showed a wonderful original and low mileage survivor 240 wagon (white/ivory) which will be sold in the near future. It's such a fantastic car and I simply had to tell you about it because maybe you know an enthusiast who would like to own a car like that.
Great video. I never knew the B20 made into the 240. Mine was in a 144DL Auto, '69 vintage. £500 back in 1981. Beautiful car. Looking forward to your progress.
I love it! So glad to see it fire up after sitting so long. With that mechanical fuel injection it'll probably just get better as it runs fresh fuel through the system. This restoration is just like my 1980 245 I got about 6 months ago. It has the B21 and has the K-jet fuel injection as well, and the same body style as you except I have the quad rounds. I thought you'd have the "D-jet" injection but it looks similar to K-jet, so Volvo might have swapped over earlier than I thought.
Hey David, I love how calm your videos are and the music you include. I had seen your videos of Arthur was it, the green 122, and then met you one year at the IPD Garage Sale when you brought it. I'm looking for a project 245, and of course prefer the older flathoods, but open to all wagons. If you know of any sitting in a driveway like this one....btw, I'm up in Washington (South Whidbey). I've got a restored 1996 850R estate with tons of upgrades, with the most recent being projector headlights & clear glass headlight lenses. I'd also be interested in a 122s Wagon (aren't they really 222s?).
19.3 mpg - eeeek - why I'm driving Volvo's lovely D5 diesels. The 2005 XC70 with the Euro 3 163 hp D5 had a readout of 61.8 UK mpg after a 1,000+ mile round trip to Isle of Skye (that's about 51.5 US mpg). The other one - a 2008 XC70 with the Euro4 185 hp and Volvo's Polestar (about 205hp) reads UK 40.0 average ) that's about US 33.3 mpg... Of course, you're paying about half or less for what we pay for motion lotion over here so not so painful after all..:)
What a superb vid. I found this video after just watching another one on the history and over engineering of the Volvo red block engines. Its funny where life takes us sometimes as its often in the wrong direction to places we have no interest. This time I am chuffed to have stumbled upon you and this channel. Loved the vid, had to hit subscribe and will be checking other vids. Good work guys.. oh and that backdrop with those mountains. A little like where I am based in the Scottish Highlands but not so high or vast here. Looking forward to the next vid, im off to find it. Keep up the good work :)
Did you find out what the "solenoid" next to the valve cover was? The one that you reconnected the wire but there was still one missing? That might be in the cold start system. 6:55.
It should have a locking tailgate strut on the driver side and a gas strut on the passenger side not 2 gas struts. In Europe the 240 had a b21 engine also in the UK its b21 like my 245dl, some Italian models had the b20 engine for tax reasons, the b21 being 2127cc and above the 2 litre tax cutoff size. Some stuff to check on k jet cars that have trouble starting, cold start injector, warm up regulator, and very important vacuum lines and air leaks.
K Jet... Fun and games till random issues you can't understand why or what I love mine but rn shes being annoying (some pressure thingy issue) Looking at an early early 144S atm, I feel like the Kjet issues are gonna push me to buy it 😂
I just bougth a 1976 Volvo 245 L red wagon with a B20 engine, in bad shape, 5 year without engine started and some good amount of rust and a bunch of junk inside. I took the challlenge, let's see if I make it run.
My mom is a volvlo fan, she has only driven a vlovo since 1973, when she got a 1972 142, which I think was the best one that she had. Im currently selling her 1991 240, its got over 200k miles, but its still in real good shape, so it may go another 200k
Nice to see you and Sarah collaborating on the 1975 240, I thought by now the Volvo SUV would be working ok, what is the problem with the suv the X70 is that a problem that all VolvosX70 suffer from?.
Great job, congratulations! I knew that 240s with b20s existed but I never actually have seen one. I’m surprised that the K-jet is still operating and is not gummed up. I’m far from an expert, but I’d recommend checking the delivery of each of the 4 injectors at a later stage. Some cylinders might be running too lean so you’d risk blowing the engine. I don’t know about the US but over in Europe gasoline contains ethanol nowadays, which is causing major issues with engines that haven’t run for a while, even 1 winter out of action can be enough to seize up a fuel pump. Carburetted but also fuel injected. Is Sara your g/f now btw?

Love that red xc90, love the 245 and 164. Great tunes and you two are lovely. Thanks for the many uploads.
80s synth tunes with classic Volvos. I could hang out here all day and then some.
Awesome to have a extra hand working on stuff.
The minute you opened the hood.... Yep get that power washer!
The 245 is engraved into the DNA of all Swedes my age. Happy to see this one get some TLC. 👍🏻

That's a car from my very early childhood, dad had to replace it as it was very well used (for good reason, very reliable) but scrapped it after some 3-4 years as he wasn't the most particular on maintenance.

Hey David, nice to see what u guy's r up to for the holidays, enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work!
This is why I like old cars, you can repair things like a fuel pump. Try doing that on the XC90. (I have a 164. Xc90, and others)

Fantastic to see a 1975 station wagon manufactured in Göteborg Sweden😀 Greatings from Sweden from another Volvo freak

I use to open all doors and just blow the dirty out with compressed air. then do the fine stuff
19:25 I can only imagine the terrible, terrible things a 70's Bosch engineer would say upon hearing this idea.
K Jet... Fun and games till random issues you can't understand why or what
I love mine but rn shes being annoying (some pressure thingy issue)
Looking at an early early 144S atm, I feel like the Kjet issues are gonna push me to buy it 😂
16:43 again, amazing song choice lmao
I just bougth a 1976 Volvo 245 L red wagon with a B20 engine, in bad shape, 5 year without engine started and some good amount of rust and a bunch of junk inside. I took the challlenge, let's see if I make it run.
Best of luck, amigo!
Can’t wait for the next part! When do you think it will be coming out?
CIS, just like a Rabbit (A1) of the same era. Very primitive, not complicated.
Nice... could it be the cat that smells 🤔
Nice mix!!!!!
Rick Anstsley/George Micheal
Sweet!!!!!
This I love!
I'm in still driving my 86 240 DL station wagon..it's getting harder to find parts or even someone to work on it tho..
Nice work u 2. 👌
Is it the B20 that gives it that punchy engine note? Sounds meaner than my B230.
I've got a 76 245dl 67k miles parked since 82. Something went wrong with jetronic and no body could figure it.
Any idea on how to clean the cowl on a 240? Mine is completely clogged with leaves
In europe the b20 was in the 240 1976 too but only in some 244/242 L
