I understand that having a place to visit is an emotional need for many people, but families die. Centuries pass and people are forgotten simply because of the passage of time. And families move away to other states or countries. Then, whose responsibility does it become? Both my parents are dead. We loved them fiercely, especially my widowed mom. But out of 7 children only one lives in the state where she is buried. None where my dad was buried. For some there was a feeling of separation. But then, we realized that neither parent is really there. They are certainly kept alive in our family through stories and pictures. Yes, cremation or green burial is a solution that needs to be looked at seriously. JMO
@glennmaxwell5394 I live hours away from there, and lived hours away when I was a kid, but would still visit the cemetery every so often. I wish I could pay for clean up.
There is no reason why the township can't propagate and appropriate specific funds for reinternment. None! Vote these politicians out. Its abhorrent that this has been allowed to go on for as long as it has.
I wouldn't bet on that. The state/city can't even house the homeless. I don't think they are going to champion for a couple of million to house the dead.
Emotions aside: This was a privately held business. The owner died years ago. It's not the city or the state's responsibility to rebury the dead. It would take a couple of million to do it. This state can't help the homeless; they're not going to spend millions re-housing the dead. It's obvious the families of these people have not visited in decades...they are probably dead. It would seem the only solution is to gather the names of the dead from the plaques, post a 30 day notice asking any relatives to make known their intentions to remove the interred. If no response, then the city should demolish and bury the building and its contents. Perhaps erect a plaque with the names of the deceased as a memorial. NO individual is going to foot the bill to remove, transport and re-bury these people. Sounds harsh, but that's the reality of the situation. The present state of the mausoleum is certainly no fit remembrance or respect.
The place is one of the most haunted places I've seen. Even the crypts in Belgium at Laeken Cemetery with a lot more bodies stored didn't have as much activity. That place in Belgium had over 4000 bodies.

The place got so bad that Douglas Fairbanks Jr. didn't want to be buried with his father there. That was when two people, I believe from Chicago, stepped in, bought it, and are bringing it back to its former glory. To fit in with this story, they are building a three story mausoleum there.

It is so sad to see that. I do not understand how it can be that way. Everyone in that mausoleum needs to be respected. I wonder if a family member of the other people there no about this. Thank you for sharing this.
A casket in a crypt in a Mausoleum should have a block of some type holding the lid open. Not much, but it has to be slightly open. The one Brown casket was not blocked open.
Mausoleum's have an air circulation system, dehumidifier so dry air is passing over the dead remains, they then dehydrate and become mummies. Lid has to be propped open or air can not reach the body. Especially one with a seal, think higher end casket. Which they usually are in a mausoleum.
I know this is a year old, so nobody will probably read this. But when I bought my home in upstate NY, it was way out in the countryside, farmland (This is where I have always preferred to live) I was taking the garbage can to the road just after dark when I saw a green mist. It was odd and glowing, about as tall and wide as an adult human. It was just swirling into itself, not dispersing at all outside of itself. My daughter, who was 12 at the time, was with me holding her cat. We just stared in shock as it slowly came toward us. Suddenly the cat my daughter was holding tensed up when she saw it and started hissing and growling but didn't try to get out of her arms. We ran to the house and locked the door. We looked out of the window and it had paused at the end of the driveway, still swirling and glowing. I didn't know what to do if it came to the house, but thankfully it continued slowly down the road. We never saw it again. But living in the seclusion of the country most of my life we all know that when an animal is reacting to fear about something, you should too. If they say thats bad, then it is. If they say run, then you do. I don't know what that thing was, but my cat did and didn't want to go near it. To this day I don't know why that thing was, but it seemed aware. Some people told me it was a wisp. But my research never mentions the color green, and it was very bright green.
That’s very interesting to hear. I’ve seen things like this in my former town of Easton, MA. The mist appears more a blue color to me. And it’s been said by quite a few people throughout the eras. I googled it and was shocked to hear of so many similar sightings.
It was fascinating and horrifying at the same time. It's funny how you freeze and can't function while your brain is trying to figure out if it has any reference for it. It was a very unique thing, I've seen and heard things way out in the countryside over the years, but this I have no expectations for.
