- Andras Schiff recently performed two recitals here in Los Angeles, in a series of three, on February 18th and March 4th. (The third will be in October) The recitals are devoted to the late sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, .Beethoven and Schubert. I was fortunate to have attended both recitals presented in Disney Hall. Here, Schiff plays the first movement of Haydn's Sonata in C major, Hob. XVI:50. Schiff performed the entire sonata as part of his February 18th recital.
He brings out the carefree, witty insouciance right from the beginning. I am loving this performance.

Good old major scale....works every time, feels like a spring morning. Anyone fancy an early walk (up at 7 ) over the hills then a dip in the river, back by 10?
Only 7 notes in the scale but so many ways to bob and weave through it....a few new ways here by Haydn. Thanks Piano Man too!

Rgis one of the lasr sonatas of Hatgn. The very beginning of this movement is completely original ans feeds it in a quite original way too. The quality of the inpiration is not far from that od the last sonatas by Beethoven.
Tempo absolutely spot on.Played with his customary good taste and elegance(not to mention colossal musicianship).All he needs is a personality...😊😊🍺

Keep this splendid performance in mind when you compare how Brendel and Gould played it. Haydn.....such genius. Schiff's version is a bit more feminine than Brendel and is metrically very balanced; it almost floats in the air. Gould's is typically a bit eccentric. Brendel transforms portions of the first movement into something approximating something Rachmaninoff would do. All excellent performances with great variety of tonal and metrical flows.
