Boy did they get the casting right in this film. And the writing. This scene, that speech. It just brings to the forefront the whole question of mythology and religion. I remember "The Iliad", and thinking my god, were the ancient peoples really this obsessed with religion? Was it that permeated in every moment of their waking lives? So obsessively you wonder how could they even function, if I trip Zeus must hold me in disfavor, ect.? When in actuality all you can go by are nebulous "signs." It's the perfect speech because Achilles welcomes the dawn of agnosticism, of pure Socratic reasoning: "The gods envy us." Next step, the "gods" don't exist, we made them up, to give us comfort on this lonely mortal's journey.
@Joel Sennerstrand The priests, who invented the gods, derived their power which enabled their very sustenance from fear and love. Flip a coin for either, which garentees the coins in the bowl, or the "victuals" left ostensibly for the gods. By comfort, we mean reasons for existence. Achilles the agnostic, spares with Briseas, the true believer. "Where's the sun god now?" "He's waiting for the right time to strike." You gotta give it up for Achilles, holding his ground before this beautiful creature. In real life any guy woulda been "oh yeah honey, tell you what, how about I build you a temple? You can be the high priestess."
@@mistermixleplick8690 I agree with you in thinking Brian is wrong in his words of Achilles being agnostic here, Achilles seems to revere the god of war in this scene. I believe the holy spirit is in us and we are godlike
God is a concept that is as old as humanity itself and that is because it is deeply engraved into our psyche. Everyone can experience this and all our ancestors really did was personifying existing emotions and psychological motifs. What do you think happens when one takes a powerful dose of psychedelics? The mind literally goes into this mode where its consciousness expands a thousands times faster than it would normally and you are left with the feeling that your perception as a human being is actually too miniscule and underdeveloped for us to say anything absolute about the existence of god or any other supernatural matter.
What I really like about "Troy" is how much is in the basket. There's romantic love-(though for some reason I feel it more from Achilles and Brisaes than Paris and Helen) familial love: Hector/Paris, Mendeleos/Agamemnon. War and violence, who's the greatest at arms, Achilles.?..You gotta give it up for Agamemnon, he was a good strategist. His two armies against your one. You submit, you get to keep your kingdom, just fight for big A when next he asks. Which he will. That's probably how he rolled up all the Greek city states: Sparta, Athens, Ithaca, . Agememnon is a proto-emperor. So there's big high stakes political/nationalist rivalry going on: Troy vs. Greek City States....."History remembers Kings and Commanders, not soldiers."...."Be careful king of kings, first you have to win the victory." But what's most ironic is "Troy" is a domestic fantasy. Achilles comes trudging back from a hard day at war to the deluxe tent by the shore. Here's two creatures matched in charisma, aBrisaes&Achilles; multi-leveled love story. But you want to keep watching them because you believe in them. It's the outside world that tears them apart. That and Paris's arrows. But can you imagine the juxtaposition, kicking ass by day and making sweet love with Brisaes at night?
at the end there she basically said she can’t forgive him for being a soldier because he just showed her he’s not just any meat head... in case you couldn’t tell.
Yeah dude watching this again I still love the scene but I can't help but think why aren't there more people seeing Briseis also said some deep stuff here particularly the "I could have forgiven a dumb brute" line. That's really relevant to anyone who's been done an injustice by someone who wasn't doing so by accident but who knew exactly what they were doing was wrong and did it anyway..
At the same time Achilles clowned her.. she said she pitys soldiers (aka dumb brutes) and he reminds her of the soldiers who died trying to protect her. He didnt want her pity, and he didnt want her forgiveness for not knowing any better. He wanted her to know that he wasnt just another cog in an army following orders and that he knew more important things about the gods that she had devoted her life in studying
"I'll tell you a secret something they don't teach you in your temple.... the gods envy us.... they envy because we're mortal. because any moment might be our last... everything's more beautiful because we are doomed... you will never be lovelier than you are now... we will never be here again.."
Each and every conversation made by Achilles is a conglomeration of truths which blend from every corner of the world. What a perfect dialogue delivery by my favorite man. Great.

You can divide up the universe into different forces and seek them out and they will come into your life. This is like appreciating the different organs in your body or the trillions of cells. There is one god and many gods at the same time. The body, the organs, the systems, the cells. You have a very one dimensional perspective on existence.

Also when or if you read this and invariably take personal offense to it, just realize that your taking of offense only proves my point further. Your feeling of offense is a defensive mechanism rooted in evolution which preserves your higher spot on the pedestal I explained earlier. Thats why I used provoking language in the first sentences of my first comment.
Aren't the Greek gods envious in general. I don't think I've ever heard a story about someone's life being fucked over without hearing God and jealousy in the same sentence. Edit: Apart from Hades I think
A thought provoking scene. One could argue that at this point in history as a species we're starting to believe a bit too much in ourselves. We're figuratively acting like gods on this planet, often feeling invincible and caring less and less about our fellow man. Perhaps we should travel back in time and ensure Achilles never speaks out these words, leaving people never the wiser. :)
Anybody who wants to live forever on earth or in heaven, has not truly contemplated/ understood the ideas of Infinity & eternity. The Hinduism has an interesting philosophical approach to this. In Hindu mythology, many humans & daemons tried to earn immortality through various means. God took one form or another and struck them all down one way or another. Only one person called Ashwatthama was ever "cursed" with immortality because he killed a baby in a womb. One more person Bheeshma in the same Epic called Mahabharata, was given the power to decide the time of his death because he was considered to be very wise. He ended up living too long and badly regretting his decision to keep postponing his own death.
The ancient greeks had a very unique view of their gods. Although they were worshipped as extremely powerful they were not treated as morally or superior to us in any way except for their aforementioned power and immortality. Homer portrays a fight between the gods during the illiad as almost comical, because they cannot die, so too are their fights meaningless and without glory. But humans, since we risk everything all the time our acts have meaning. I will say though this portrayal of achilles is bad, achilles was deeply devout and would never blaspheme the Gods.
I recently watched this movie again And i thought I gotta use these lines for a song The gods envy us because we're mortal So i did! Im still working on it...

People say Hinduism and Greek religion were same because they both have multiple God's and there is a thunder welding King of gods in both of them who is a jerk. Indra and Zeus, but this is where problem comes, when Indra acts like a jerk he is punished multiple times for thousands and thousands of years and one time a Human was given his throne as punishment to teach him. But Zeus got no such retribution as no one is above him but in Hinduism there are actual God's who have to make sure that Dharma is maintained, there are multiple realities in Hinduism and in each there is a Indra there is only one Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti.
Then why was he allowed to keep the throne , he was a jerk right . If dharma was important ,he shud have been replaced . Greek and hindu gods have a lot of similarity tbh.
@@EloraSelah He was replaced, multiple times. Indra is not one guy, it works like a cycle. One time he was even replaced by a Human king. Indra is a name used by multiple heavenly beings who take the place of King of Devta's not god's. The similarity between Hindu and Greek gods is cosmetic, they are very different ideas. There are God's above God's (devta) in Hinduism. In Greek religion, Zeus is Supreme, Indra is not.
Indeed they do. But we are immortal. Our energy will always be human and it cant be destroyed or manipulated. Fear them not, our mother and us shall prevail.
Running away with this thought. The Good God doesn't get mad at us when we sin simply because it is objectively morally offensive, but because we did not act in a way that make sense to such a deity. Because the Good God can never be, could never be, and had never been, anything but Good. Their nature does not permit it, they never had the opportunity to fall, like we do. It isn't a matter of choice, for to sin simply never occurs to such a being, and what force is there that could possibly compell them? God might have Heaven, but we possess the Freedom to choose Hell; to go to where God is not. A punishment, to be sure. But maybe, it is a power. A power to choose our own nature. A power that not even God possesses. For if Hell is where God is not, and Heaven a place where God "is", then Hell is a place that God can never be, and Heaven seems less a palace, and more a prison. Or, an Asylum.
The Christian God is unique in the sense that we're not just "Servants" and "Mortals" - But eventually we are destined to become Gods literal children. The bible states that God will be our Father and we will be ascended above the Angels in heaven. "Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?" - 1 Corinthians 6:3 KJV God wants us to behave like servants to teach us humility, Because our purpose in heaven is going to be far greater. It is said, that we will be Rulers and sit WITH God and Jesus Christ on the throne. God wants us to be his Children - A royal bloodline in heaven. That is the difference between Paganism and Christianity. Furthermore - Salvation is a free gift. You do not have to go to church, you do not have to do good deeds - All that you need to do, is truly believe in Jesus sacrifice for you and your heart will naturally change towards good. Finally; For those who have a problem with it - Hell is NOT eternal. Eternal Hell is a lie to make god look cruel. Even more; Hell is only as bad as a person deserves. It's a punishment for the evil people have done and that is it. Then the will be no more. People choose to be with God or not. "47 That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded" Luke 12:47-48 KJV

Interesting take, but ultimately obscenely wrong

Man all this time I thought this quote was by Homer, so when I finished reading the Iliad and the Odyssey I was so confused because this quote never came up. Turns out it was from a movie lmao
there is only one god and that is you me and everything in the universe experiencing itself !
You can divide up the universe into different forces and seek them out and they will come into your life. This is like appreciating the different organs in your body or the trillions of cells. There is one god and many gods at the same time. The body, the organs, the systems, the cells. You have a very one dimensional perspective on existence.
@@donvandamnjohnsonlongfella1239 wow Jesse your so much more woke than everone else. Please teach us messiah. Your pathetic attempt at philosophical one upmanship is classic and pointless. I think people like you just don't know when to accept what is true and when to stop thinking about it, always having to take it 'one level further'. I would wager you are really just a sad desperate person trying to acheive meaning in life by differentiating yourself from others by positioning yourself on a higher pedestal.
If you think about it, thats really just your evolutionairy drive for survival via dominance manafesting itself in your thoughts and personal philosophy.
Also when or if you read this and invariably take personal offense to it, just realize that your taking of offense only proves my point further. Your feeling of offense is a defensive mechanism rooted in evolution which preserves your higher spot on the pedestal I explained earlier. Any moment it can be last.
We see what we want to see.
Hey, I have a dish towel like the one she's holding. I wouldn't let her bleed on my good dish towels.

Huh? He was brilliant as Cliff Booth?

@@ktowniecity7269 Indeed.
The Christian God is unique in the sense that we're not just "Servants" and "Mortals" - But eventually we are destined to become Gods literal children. The bible states that God will be our Father and we will be ascended above the Angels in heaven.
"Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?" - 1 Corinthians 6:3 KJV
God wants us to behave like servants to teach us humility, Because our purpose in heaven is going to be far greater.
