2024 - COLORADO RIVER 100 - Kayak and Canoe Race

The Colorado River 100 is BACK! September 14, 2024 marked the return of the popular paddle race which has been on hiatus since 2020. Starting in Bastrop, Texas the 100 Kilometers (62 Miles) of unsuspectingly challenging course over shallows, shoals, and aquatic vegetation. Vegetation which had been reduced since Hurricane Harvey in 2017 (prompting race cancellation) has returned to add an extra obstacle for paddlers to surmount on their way to La Grange, Texas. Race class starts were at 5:00 am (Adventure Class) and 7:00 am (Competition Class) which was two hours earlier than the previously established course starts. This allowed for paddlers to travel farther and faster before the Texas heat made its presence known.
Would like to extend a heap of gratitude for West Hansen and Barbara Hansen-Edington for their efforts in resurrecting this engaging event, the small army of volunteers keeping the race safe, and the racers who dared to brave the heat and shallows. More information about the race at:

From a technical standpoint it was a lot of disk space dancing as 115GB came off the cards with over 2.5 hrs. reducing to 74 min. of selects. With the race start at 7 am (sunrise 7:13) the high iso footage was just too noisy to recover given the murky atmosphere and non-existent lighting. This was not for lack of trying but after a number of hours using the GPU as a space heater it was obvious the delivery video would have to begin at Mile 5. Drone was a challenge in that the software kept barking for updates and required several reinitializations/calibrations to operate. Even then GPS satellites were slow to acquire. This lead to delayed takeoffs and unfortunate missed shots. Tech is great to have but far from perfect.
