Loved this video, thank you for sharing! As a marketing student, we learn that the core function of marketing is creating value for the consumer (it's a actually a huge part of what we're assessed on, how our marketing activities deliver REAL VALUE for our audience)! That would be the real goal for any marketer who actually cares about what they do. However, I feel like what we see online doesn't reflect this and it's a little disappointing that an entire discipline now seems like it's all about releasing as much content as possible to keep up with algorithms and SEO metrics and it feels a little discouraging. I hope that in the future, I get to work with a company that shares my values and truly puts their consumers first!
Tbh most of the 'digital marketers' are interns or new entrees who are just 'good with social media', not necessarily every marketer knows what they are doing and that's the reason why 'popularity=marketing' became a thing for them, and tbh after those 'popular' people share the products it doesn't affect the sales that dramatically lol. When it's a less popular person with a higher amount of credibility and creativity, sales go up more.

Awesome points! For the sunscreen, I couldn’t tell if the chemical sunscreen had a white cast or not, but I could DEFINITELY see a slight cast with the mineral sunscreen. If I could make a suggestion: Consider launching tinted sunscreen/BB cream for darker people. I know that the white cast is actually desirable in Korea, but for darker people (even darker Koreans), escaping white cast can be quite a struggle. Thanks for creating such cool products!
Great topic- it's also interesting to think about how audience literacy on a subject makes a big difference. For example, quarantine shifted many people's energy and time to self care where people who previously knew Nothing about skin care or dermatology became interested in that content. When the literacy of the audience is zero, virtually anything creators put out will be interesting/helpful. Now that the community of people interested in skincare has exploded and become better versed, the 101 content and product recommendations aren't compelling anymore- not because that community has lost interest in the topic, but because they're craving a higher level of content (and have bought a crap ton of product). I personally would love to see creators taking better advantage of the medium they're in- ie: youtube being better for long format (not trying to leverage it for bite size shorts). With long format you can actually dig into things like understanding beauty regulations and why they're different around the world, the ethics of botanical versus lab made ingredients, adulteration/fraud in production lines and ingredient sourcing, why certain ingredients/cosmetic procedures are so much more popular in one part of the world versus the other, why a sunscreen is so much harder to formulate than almost anything else. Here's to hoping the next wave of content gets more ambitious with its' topics!
I'm about to graduate cosmetology school and I'm just now learning Instagram but it all feels the same. I feel like everyone is trying to "sell" themselves. "Choose me I'm better because xyz" "look how specialized I am in my focus" and like yeah it's cool but it was made for views not passion. I wanna use social media but I don't wanna be a promo robot to my friends....
Great topic. I just want to add that sometimes it becomes obvious when content creators are trying to go viral or their opinions change because of a brand deal. This makes me lose interest in their channel because the authenticity has been lost. For example, I followed one channel from their early days and now it’s so obvious they are trying to go viral because they are over acting on the camera. For another channel, I stopped following them because their recommendations were so off when it came to their brand sponsorship products versus their usual recommendations. Some viewers will catch on.
There is also this side of 'wanting to go viral' maybe not for you or some other more known creators but it is seen as 'big money'. It is not nice when you pay $3000 - $5000 for a RUclipsr to promote your company's products for 3-5 minutes in their videos when your monthly salary is below that and then you edit their videos for secondary usage :/ People who experienced this, especially if they experienced money problems before would try going 'viral' ofc. (and not only these people lol, who doesn't want to get rich easily(!) in a capitalist system???)
Thanks Liah for the video! 🥺 always a good reminder to slow down.. It’s hard when to see other content creators posting their stats .. 😓 oops.. Can’t wait for the spf!

Nowadays, I am exhausted of trying to catch up with the new products being promoted on social media.. It used to be fun discovering new and viral items, but everything is becoming similar and there is no fun in trying them out anymore because I would think, "ahh never mind, there'll be more similar products in the future". so I get why it is very hard to make contents with fresh ideas every time but since everyone is doing the same thing, it becomes.. boring.
I think it's not just the influencers' fault. Brand definitely take advantage of social media environment to advertise, and if they see a product is successful, they just pump out an entire line of it (for eg)
Hi, I'm an environmental engineering college Year 2 going on to Year 3 this August and I've had my fair share of social media marketing jobs in the environmental sector, just bc I am more naturally creatively inclined and I like the flexibility to learn new skills while also WFH. However, I have found that much of "content creation" is just "put something out there so that our page doesn't tank" or "make sure people don't FORGET we exist". I've worked to publicise a thrift store before and literally a post could be just "take a pic of our shelves and make up a not-so-shitty tagline". I'm currently working as a social media intern for a zero waste non-profit but there are so many already in this space that do similar things, and there's only so much info to tell the masses bc most are factual and scientific. Yes, maybe ways to reduce our waste can be great to put out but there are already so many putting out similar things and it's so easy to get drowned out in the barrage of posts... I don't know, as someone doing social media for companies, even I feel stifled bc it's become a game of "just put something out, just don't fall off the algorithm", not truly engaging with the audience and not truly adding value anymore... Just my two cents! Please feel free to continue this discussion!
I do a similar job and kinda agree. That's how we started. Just post every day, no meaning necessarily. And now we have new members and a new manager, and we post less and care about the 'message' we give on our posts & on our paid collaborations too. For real user generated content they are free to mention anything they like/dislike about our products but if we pay someone to promote our products we want them to be 'clear' and deliver the message!
I think it comes down to the individual creator and the nature of the platform/algorithm. There are a lot of smaller creators out there who are still doing exactly what you describe - they’re still putting out original content with the focus on value and creativity rather than on profit or “viral” potential. They’re not making money or doing sponsored content, and they don’t get much recognition or a lot of views. Viewers have to dig more to find them, because the algorithm isn’t likely to promote creators like that. If you’re a creator making a living from your channel, you probably can’t afford to ignore the algorithm because your rent and your bills are on the line. I wish that platforms would adopt algorithms that make it easier to find a wider variety of different content and creators instead of only showing whatever “viral” content they think will keep users scrolling.

Thanks for talking about this. In my case, I used to trust recommendations from beauty creators, but that hasn’t been the case for a long time. I quickly realized that most of the creators I follow were recommending a product just because of a sponsorship, so I think I’m my case it’s become boring because of the lack of trust I have with beauty and skincare creators. I agree 100% with the authenticity part!
Thankfully I wasn't the only one feeling this! Lately, I've been watching streaming services for entertainment purposes rather than youtube whereas 3 years ago, I would opted for youtube. I used to get excited for new launches, viral products yet now, I rarely buy new products and just restocking my go-to and hollygrails products. And truly, watching your video validate all of my feelings!
It is hard to be original as a content creator. Being a male in a predominantly female space I do have a little bit of an edge in the curly hair and skincare space, I create mainly because I love creating and that has to be the core of why you create.
I just want to see what I’m subbed to and see it in the order it was posted. I’m so tired of things not showing up on my feed until a week later. The algorithm is the fkn worst
Liahh I hope one day you make a thicker moisturizer. I have dryy skin and the oatl so simple is unfortunately too light. I’m thinking of purchasing your great barrier body relief for my face since its a moisturizer and the ingredients look amazing.
I find that this situation accelerated exponentially in the past 10 years. I use to love the beauty community because it was a space to share tips and make tutorials, review the product we buy so we can inform others, educate ourselves etc. And you could also see people get some use out of their products (particularly makeup). But these days, there are soooo many product launches in the whole year, if you compare to 10 years ago. You see a product in one video or one post, and that's it.. Skincare became real fast fashion for god sake! In a way the reason why makeup accounts like project pans are so popular, it's because you can actually see people using their items, and get yourself inspired. People are done with the disgusting consumerism. The amount of waste these launches represents, but also the sheer mass of it feels to me like it's just a money grab. Like there is much less care put into the product itself. And there is so many new brand popping out of everywhere. It became overwhelmingly disgusting. It's just too much. And add to this that everything became political about beauty products, beauty brands, ingredients, etc. The amount of misinformation online is horrific as well. I am just done... I don't follow a single big acount anymore, it is the new façade of advertisement. I am just online for the beauty talk, the hobby, the passion around cosmetics and beautiful dirt, not for this whole influencer business.
Please ship to India . I mean sell your products make them available in India through websites like Nykaa which has a lot of Korean brands already on it along with other western brands. Thank you . Can't wait to try your macha hemp hydrating clenser and beet the sun sunscreen and also khelaluya among others of course. I want to try everything from your brand.
With the maximalist culture nowadays, sometimes I cringe at how many eventually wasted products I see on TikTok. I am also getting more concerned for the environment. Also, I am getting exhausted at everything being about getting viral that I really doubt everything I watch on TikTok and Instagram. I only trust a handful of people from IG and TikTok. And none of them have become viral.
So true this is why I try to keep my videos very structured and most of my reviews are basically me saying it’s too expensive or it’s not worth it 😆 glad I’m still a small channel where I don’t get sponsorships yet bc I can be super honest. Granted I have a regular full time job and can do it as a hobby so I don’t have to worry financially. Thx for making this video! I’ve been finding social media boring lately too and have been following artists more

It seems that since people are looking at economics in a new way, where environmentalism and focus on ethics is becoming bigger vs just getting rich or letting people get rich via shady/destructive things, I feel the new standard for economics will shift from trying to make money for the sake of it (consumerism for the sake of consumerism) and shift into a more holistic way of approaching resources, where people, community, and the Earth are considered in both production and consumption.
All money is is a resource that gets you access to other resources. As the times have shown us, there is huge inequality in resource distribution. A shift in the mindset of younger generations points to the desire for more equity and monetary + government systems that actually help instead of harm the people and the environment. The mindset behind what our current world system was build on is crumbling, and being replaced with a new value system and new standards.

If people have more access to resources, they don't need to monetize things in order to stay afloat, so by default, you get people who make things that are original, vs things that are marketable/commercial.

I quickly realized that most of the creators I follow were recommending a product just because of a sponsorship, so I think I’m my case it’s become boring because of the lack of trust I have with beauty and skincare creators. I agree 100% with the authenticity part!
Thanks for sharing your perspective! Totally agree with you from a viewer’s perspective
Yesssss

Taking notes 📝
Wait, you spoke my mind 🥹 Thanks for sharing your thoughts out loud!!! So important
@@LiahYoo Thank you Liah for opening the discussion ^^
Please ship to India . I mean sell your products make them available in India through websites like Nykaa which has a lot of Korean brands already on it along with other western brands. Thank you .
Can't wait to try your macha hemp hydrating clenser and beet the sun sunscreen and also khelaluya among others of course. I want to try everything from your brand.
We do ship to India from KraveBeauty.com! 🥰
@@LiahYoo it becomes very costly because of international shipping and especially customs charges.
I’ve been finding social media boring lately too and have been following artists more
Definitely checking your videos out! I've been watching and making videos which are at a slower pace. It really helps me to slow down and be present.
I'd love for you to check it out, let me know if it helps
I Go To Shopping For A Week.
Thank you so much for this!!! Couldn't have said it any better!! BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY I AN REALLY EXCITED FOR THE NEW SUNSCREEN! 😍💚
Ahhh you know it’s gon be worth the wait 🥺
❤❤❤❤ love your ideas
We don’t mind to seeing you finishing your make up (silently) Liah :)
Me encanta cuando la gente descubre el agua tibia jaja
in the beginning of her tik tok the whole product going viral had me confused. I immediately thought that it really only propels the brand and capitalism. I always thought creators wanted to go viral for their work rather than the products they use if that makes sense
For a platform like tiktok, if you’re the one that makes a product go viral, the more views you get!
hi
I am so excited for the chemical sunscreen when it comes out!
Thank you Skyy!
I love your GRWM. They helped me create a morning routine starting a few years ago because of you. Will always enjoy your content when you do post. 💗🌴
Thank you Thomas 🥹🥹💕
