It’s better explained in the book to a degree. In that they have to set traps up at the tops of trees for birds. They set them in the top because birds don’t like to land in the forest, pretty much all animals avoid it like the plague. So they trap birds when they can and other times they forage for edible plants and berries. For water there is a stream near the coop one of them walks to every morning to collect water. They don’t shower. It’s December when Mina and the bird show up so it’s too cold to bathe. The most she does is splash freezing water on herself sometimes and tries to keep her hands clean. I don’t believe there is a mention of how they use they use the bathroom though my guess is out in the woods during the day.
I don’t like most of the changes the movie made from the book. For some reason the bird having a name is annoying to me, I like how the book refers to him to simply as “the golden one” throughout the whole thing. Plus it didn’t talk. Dani was just a traumatized kid and not autistic or crazy in the book. Also as an autistic person I don’t like how the movie just made him autistic for some reason. Ciara didn’t do much because she was devastated from the loss of her husband which felt real. Plus the cool thing was that the watchers brought him to the coop to torture him but the people aren’t able to see outside at all so there’s a bit of questioning if it’s really him and a rift forms when everyone makes Ciara stay inside instead of opening the door and dooming them all. The bird doesn’t leave his cage, instead they have a freaking compass which makes more sense. Like the book wasn’t perfect but I prefer how it went about things more.
A few months ago, I listened to the audio book this film is "based on" and my gosh, did they ever just take the character names and basic setting and then do a very bad job of adapting this atmospheric modern Irish folk tale 😕 Reminds me of what Netflix did to the Bird Box adaptation or D&D did to Game of Thrones. This is one of those situations where I'd recommend reading the book, but to go in blind (not possible for watchers of this video, unfortunately).
was really interested to hear your takes on this one, where it lost me was with the actions daniel takes towards the end as if that issue hasn't been resolved like twice before, im not too nitpicky with my films but that was just dumb
Shymalan’s “flaw” was always finalizing stories with prioritizing the idea/premise and not the actual story. He clearly doesn’t have an issue coming up with great ideas.
This was quite the mixed bag for me. I really liked the first two acts, I thought the mystery and thrills were very engaging. Unfortunately the 3rd act really went down hill for me. The reveal and “twist” just didn’t work for me.
I liked the movie. But was still a bit disappointed? Like I thought it was going to go way more into how Mina plays other people and the fairies can turn into other people. I also noticed how in the beginning of the movie, we don't see the faces of the shop keeper or the man Mina talks to at the bar. The shop keepers face also looked a bit off. I thought that was going to come up more but it didnt. I knew that we were dealing with changlings immediately lol! I love irish folklore. There were just some things I thought the movie would do and it just didn't. I loooooved the old lady. I really want to see her in more things. She just looked really cool to me lol.
I watched the movie recap and was also very very disappointed. I really thought it was going to be a metaphor to spectating and watching influencers and reality TV. In the end it looks like they completely scrapped that idea and made this shit.
I was so stoked when I heard there was a horror movie featuring fae creatures coming out. Mythology and folklore is a passion of mine and has been since I was a kid. Some of those original fairytales are bleak as hell with terrifying creatures that are a mix of wild animal, unknowable magic, and natural disaster. There's so much potential there for great movies. Sadly, it sounds like this one missed the mark and ended up being incredibly stupid and boring. I was gonna go see it too. :(
I tried watching this movie and fell asleep on it the first time and the second time, I wished I was asleep.. I have to watch this review to fully grasp what I've seen .... The movie was all over the place, the story telling wasn't good and I was left feeling like what was the point for real!!
Ireland doesn't have massive virgin forests like that, nor does it have such a huge population of black people. If you want movies to look like they take place in America, just set them in America and be done with it.
Most of Ireland is deforested but there are some old growth forests left, enough to make something like this movie feasible. The characters are kept in a small area of the forest because of magic. As someone who’s lived in Ireland, there are enough people of color living there that having literally one black person in a group of white people isn’t far fetched. Also my guy, you’re talking about realism in an M Night Shyamalan movie about faeries lmao.
Fairies are a huge part of Irish folklore. You should’ve done a bit of research. This doesn’t make the movie better but it does make a difference for the story of the fae being the bad guys
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but finished the audio book last night. The book is more detailed and a bit different of course, creepy. It’s was 10 hours long (audio book). I sad alone in my parents living, which overlooked woods, from 11pm to 3am listening to the book - excited, yet creepy and scary I was.
This movie suffers from the same problem all Shitamalan movies after Unbreakable suffer from: nobody talks like a normal person, nobody ACTS like a normal person. The problem is, if your characters are to be convincing they HAVE to act like normal people, unless they're playing a deranged character. We don't KNOW and CAN'T know how inhuman beings act because we've never met one. When you read about fay folk in folklore, they act and express emotions like normal humans, even if those emotions are often negative (in for instance like how easily offended and petty they are), but they don't act like emotionless robots like in Signs or this movie (like, seriously, who tells a bird, "You wouldn't like me if you knew the real me"? Who TALKS like that?!? Really, the daughter learned well from her incompetent and pretentious father.
I'm glad i watched the recap recently and did not watch the movie in full. I saw Lady in the Water in the theaters and HATED IT. Then i saw the recap of this and had to think about how much i hated that movie. This movie and that movie WENT NO WHERE. They try to build this mythology and characters but it wasn't scary or interesting.
Honestly I love the premise... but the execution just bad. She tried to cpy the style of her father, wich is itself not very good in a storytelling point of view, and hit and miss with his atmosphere... But yeah, when you're "daughter of", you can have the buget for a movie based on your name, not your skills... Nepotism at is finest...
“Try not to die” the bird whispers to the movie. Lol thanks for the cid sir, not a fan of other channels adding more extra bs to stretch their videos. I gotta admit your voice put me to sleep, i had to rewatch after nap. Will be watching you more when i cant sleep.
There is a major plot hole no one seems to talk about. It is explained that feries were good etc etc and then they had kids with humans. It was these "kids" what were able to shapeshift and scared humans so much that they banished the feries. So all the watchers must be halflings since they shapeshift but thats not true in the movie as Madeline is a "daywalker" and is special because she is a halfling, implying the other watchers are "normal" feries. Am I missing something???
The ability to shape shift was passed down. It's explained that no one knows what happened to the halflings, because they were more difficult to distinguish.
4:12 Not her friend, twin sister 12:01 we see multiple times they cook the food outside in the daytime. There was a fire and a bird cooking over it, in one shot.
Ahhhh yes. Very good. Sorry I missed a few details; I was in a shit-show cinema that had a group of obnoxious teens next to me and had to keep telling them to shut the fuck up. That’s why I also missed the line about the bird saying try not to die.
I feel bad for the movie… listening to people rip it apart. I haven’t seen it yet but I read the book and a lot of the plot issues sound straight out of the book. I mean, they could have changed things, but maybe they were wanting to stick closely to the source material. I’ll have to watch it and decide from there.
In the trailer I saw Dakota tells the bird "I'm going out tonight, try not to die." And the the bird repeats it. Was that cut from the film itself, removing the context for the bird to say it later? I feel like that's on par for Shyamalamanam, aiming for something but then tweaking it in the wrong way so it just completely misses the mark 🙄
Hey Stark; I'm just looking up reviews/hot takes/whatever about 'The Watchers' an- Hold up! I'm just a guy looking stuff up (for clarity) and this is by far the best, honest "review" of this bat-shit film; why the heck did I have to scroll through ten pages of crap to find you?! I guess im the only one who enjoyed this movie. Mina changing herself to bond with strangers is what later saves her life when Madeline tries to kill her. I enjoy the mythical creature part of it, im so glad it wasnt some secret society or govt crap (tired of those). I enjoyed the twist of Madeline also being a fairy (part fairy). It made sense that she knew so much about what they want and how to hide from them. Also that no people longer than her were there. I will say the negatives were that the characters weren't displaying fear as much as they should have. Especially Mina when she first arrived. Also was unrealitic that the professor's office was unused for so long, they should have just made it his house. Last, them not looking under the carpet was stupid. The door should have been hidden better.
@@alexandresobreiramartins9461 true lol but they also showed hella missing persons posters so it wasn't totally unnoticed. I'm sure if someone went searching they'd just end up fairy food

27:35 wrong. Madeline never said that the watchers can't swim. She actually said that, they don't have to worry because the watchers can't leave the forest. So there's a difference! You just have to listen closely

I think some people really don't get the symbolism of this film. It clearly went over some people's head, and if you are more an absolute 'realist' and insist that all movies make '100%' to your world view, then your fooling yourself. Your world view is just as bad as anything in this movie, you just judge other peoples as worse', but don't have the skills, bravery, humility, courage, nor craftsmanship to make your own, so you judge others in your ivory tower. I don't mind critics, and not everyone has to like everything, but the way you approach critics is so full of yourself, it's hard to imagine you ever creating anything but that which is 100% a reflection of yourself as the main character, because if they are one once different, the your not going to have any empathy for them, so you'd only be able make characters that are 100% the same as your world view. No room for differences, or 'errors'. When musicians play music, especially back in the 70's and eighties they would make mistakes, singing slightly off pitch because the speaker feedback on stage was off, because someone misses the timing etc. But those performances though not perfect were I think so much more full of life then the pitch corrected performances of today.... Yes this movie has some parts you must look past, suspend disbelief to go on the journey. Sometimes the journey is worth suspending the disbelief. But sadly most people are so used to being spoon fed, the ideas of reflection, self-hatred, being uncomfortable in your own skin, seem completely lost on every single reviewer who disliked the movie. And yea, if you can't understand the higher dialogue taking place, the the errors seems random and pointless, rather than filled with the life of a raw performance, writing, journey that both the writer and director have tried to take the audience on. Where you have to forgive the odd note, and look past it to hear the music of the spheres...
Having symbolism doesn't make a movie good. Also, I don't care for 'realism' I care for consistent plot / story logic. I like Lord of The Rings. That shit is so beyond reality.
@@Stark-CinemaIt is clear from your review you missed the themes of the film. And again that's not the issue, it's reviewing something before you have studied it enough to understand it. I think if you want to cut up Acolyte and not search for 'deeper meaning', or 'symbolism', I'm with yea. Cause that is the worst writing and directing possible, worse then a student film, cause at least student films have an excuse, but Acolyte is just unbelievable bad writing. But something like The Watchers, you know the writer of the original source material(book) had deeper themes he was exploring. Every scene in the movie is playing with this theme, even the reasons for her vaping, she can't stand being alone with her thoughts cause someone who is hating themselves, well that's the worse torture you can give them, especially when they have been living with it for a long time, they have by then found coping mechanism to deal with the pain, distraction, taking on other people's goals, etc. So if you had shown you understood what the director was attempting, then I'd be ok with your review, but you just seem to be treating it at surface level, and missing the entire point of the book and film. It's like taking a poem at heart because it doesn't follow proper grammar. The entire point of this film is self choosen isolation for whatever reasons people do that to themselves, and it's a film about going through hell for her to transcend that. At least this is what the writer in interviews, and the director and actors talked about. About the envy that we all have of other people's lives being better than ours, that youtuber's life seems 'so perfect' and how we mimic those in a higher social standing we believe than ourselves, trying to 'mimic', etc. There is yes some issues, like it's hard to believe anyone professor could just kill hundreds of people in the name of 'science', and how the hell would that not be noticed, etc. It's not believable. But it doesn't really matter, sub in whatever you could believe, and it won't change the scripts themes, or ideas. If you want to not look past that, as I said, if you need per pitch, then can't hear what the muscians are going for. What Hendrix was trying to get to, etc. And i explained my in context meaning of 'realism' as being whatever 'works for your own sense of 'believable', etc" ie of course that includes fantasy films, but you will hate some fantasy films because they don't reach your idea of what might be a believable 'consistent' world, based on your particular worldview. It's kind of an obvious point, and your choice of addressing that seems like trying to point to semantics rather then address the meat of the criticism, which is you didn't bother to understand the themes of the source material, and therefore what the film built a foundation from, etc.
@@Arrogan28 But what are the themes? And yes, I agree with Stark, having "themes", being "allegorical" does not make a story or movie good, just make it pretentious.

@@erinfrazier1439yeah, the boy said “how many times will she p in the bucket?” When introducing Mina
Thanks for the book rec!!
was really interested to hear your takes on this one, where it lost me was with the actions daniel takes towards the end as if that issue hasn't been resolved like twice before, im not too nitpicky with my films but that was just dumb
Nepotism at its finest, isn't this just that horror show "Them" the monsters live in underground burrows and only come out during the night
The bird gets that phrase before fanning goes out in the wig; she says “I’m going out tonight, try not to die”
My thing is how did Madeline not know of the underground bunker? She clearly knew the professor would go in and out
12:42 I'm guessing that the peace talks happening in 1992 are regarding the Irish troubles (1960s-1998)
To be fair, the book sucked, so she didn't have a lot to work with for a movie.
LMAO
I tried watching this movie and fell asleep on it the first time and the second time, I wished I was asleep.. I have to watch this review to fully grasp what I've seen ....
The movie was all over the place, the story telling wasn't good and I was left feeling like what was the point for real!!
The perfect videos to listen to while working out
Its funny because I just had to delete multiple comments saying I’m awful to listen to 😂
But also thanks for the love my friend
The bird mimicking her is a direct nod to the watchers being mimics lol
Haven't finished yet, but i bet it's government related.
Edit: her vape is definitely laced too
😂😂😂
You should not have to do research to enjoy any film. I stand by my opinion, and now knowing this it still doesn't make the film any better. Lmao.
I feel like I would have loved the book way more
This movie suffers from the same problem all Shitamalan movies after Unbreakable suffer from: nobody talks like a normal person, nobody ACTS like a normal person.
She tells the bird she's going out, and try not to die. It repeats her and she's shocked because it's not supposed to mimic
Found your channel the other day and am loving your content; great work and good commentary!
A real twist in an M. Night Shyamalan movie would be no twist at all.
My assumption is they could cook on a fire they make
I'm glad i watched the recap recently and did not watch the movie in full. I saw Lady in the Water in the theaters and HATED IT. Then i saw the recap of this and had to think about how much i hated that movie. This movie and that movie WENT NO WHERE. They try to build this mythology and characters but it wasn't scary or interesting.
The “try not to die” line was from when right before the main character left the bird alone to go out to a bar.
I’m sorry I missed that I was in a theater full of shit teenagers who wouldn’t shut the fuck up
@@Stark-Cinema lmao I know you’re pain. That’s why I try to go as early as possible. They want to be apart of the show so bad.
The scene with the car craah made me laugh out loud, it plays out in the most insane way.
Thank god...muh curiosity was about to waste my time again
Honestly I love the premise... but the execution just bad. She tried to cpy the style of her father, wich is itself not very good in a storytelling point of view, and hit and miss with his atmosphere... But yeah, when you're "daughter of", you can have the buget for a movie based on your name, not your skills... Nepotism at is finest...
So glad i found your channel! 😊
Welcome to the channel my friend!!
“Try not to die” the bird whispers to the movie. Lol thanks for the cid sir, not a fan of other channels adding more extra bs to stretch their videos. I gotta admit your voice put me to sleep, i had to rewatch after nap. Will be watching you more when i cant sleep.
I loved the movie no lie. Underrated but it was a solid 7/ 10
4:12 Not her friend, twin sister
12:01 we see multiple times they cook the food outside in the daytime.
You deserve way more subscribers dude.
This made my day!! More content coming today - HoTD episode 1 recap commentary 🎬🙏
@Stark-Cinema looking forward to it!
I feel bad for the movie… listening to people rip it apart. I haven’t seen it yet but I read the book and a lot of the plot issues sound straight out of the book. I mean, they could have changed things, but maybe they were wanting to stick closely to the source material. I’ll have to watch it and decide from there.
When you said "the Group Coop" I fucking lost it
In the trailer I saw Dakota tells the bird "I'm going out tonight, try not to die." And the the bird repeats it. Was that cut from the film itself, removing the context for the bird to say it later? I feel like that's on par for Shyamalamanam, aiming for something but then tweaking it in the wrong way so it just completely misses the mark 🙄
It wasn’t cut; I missed it because I was in an obnoxious showing where the people next to me wouldn’t shut up. I’m sorry 🥴
Yeh so no one looked for a professor at a university who hadn’t been back to class but left his office in tact
BTW, stupid thing to put Norse runes in her car's radio when we're in Ireland. Guess Shyamalana Jr. just thinks all "ancient people" use Norse runes.
There was a god-fearing one that nearly had me... fuck! You're good; your honesty goes a long way - I hope you don't mind if I tag along (also, I've drank a lot so I can only apologise for sounding like I'm from some sort of corporate wank parlour, "tickle your toes John?" - I meant well when I started... fuck🤦🏻♂)
Jesus Christ, I'm terrible at making an entrance... I meant to say, "Hey Stark, Awesome channel; I'm going to Subscribe!"
My friend!! This was an amazing comment to ready, I am lucky to have a viewer like you. Thank you so much!
She must've thought riding her Dad's last name would lead to automatic success. Nepotism at it's finest.
i feel like the dialogue was off. It had zero subtext, and didnt let you think for yourself, it always told you the things that were happening and didnt let you piece it tpgether by yourself. Kind of annoying, i think that hindered the experience a lot for me
When I got into the video, I tought your voice was A.I. generator and I was like... "its another one of thoes..." and than I saw your face and was like ah noice
4:38 the bird learned it from her! That’s what she said to the bird before she went out the night before
Ahhhhhhh f*ck me lmao
Also the hundreds of workers the professor sacrificed to the fairies without anyone in the outside world noticing...
@@alexandresobreiramartins9461 true lol but they also showed hella missing persons posters so it wasn't totally unnoticed. I'm sure if someone went searching they'd just end up fairy food
is this movie not just the show From but stripped down and worse?
The movie doesn’t have plot , it is just a big mystery box
Great video as always!
This movie sounds so frustrating! I'm happy just watching this review!
Nepotism at its finest. This.
Is why we will no longer have good movies come out of hollywood. It's all about them indie movies now!
No surprise coming from M. Night "They just don't get me" Sham a lot.
Maybe that's not what she meant with "Happy Ending"...? :)
That's a big closet.. (great video btw)
Watched this after watching.. you know what. Spot on review.
Thank you very much for taken the bullet, so I don’t need to .
Honestly, I loved this movie. I did lose interest after they got in the boat, however, so if i watch it again, ill turn it off there. 😂
I genuinely fell asleep during this movie, my favourite genre of movies are thrillers/horrors. It wasnt good, i was able to catch some of the movie some shots are good but thats all.
I would suggest to put more clips from the movie otherwise good video

Interesting review. I liked the book, probably will watch the film for the creature design.
This would be a good example of a video that would be better with scenes of the movie interwoven with your commentary.
I made it when the movie is in theaters… I can’t legally show the film
So it's like true blood ?great original storytelling thank you for saving me 30 bucks
Professor R.K? R.Kelly is that you?
Boring movie, it was so dumb and a total waste of time!
27:35 wrong. Madeline never said that the watchers can't swim. She actually said that, they don't have to worry because the watchers can't leave the forest. So there's a difference! You just have to listen closely
I’m sorry I paid 20 bucks to see the movie and there were idiot kids next to me who wouldn’t shut the fuck up.

Saw 😮it Monday truly bonkers 🤪
Wow. So dumb. Who’s giving the ok on these dumpster fires?
That shit is so beyond reality.
you took this way too deeply / personally, don't come back to my channel, have a nice day!
@@Arrogan28 Please listen to the end of my review, I went over the themes clearly. Have a nice day my friend thanks for the comment.
@@Arrogan28 But what are the themes? And yes, I agree with Stark, having "themes", being "allegorical" does not make a story or movie good, just make it pretentious.
How is this a rant if 3 quarters of the video is a recap of the movie...
