Is this 20mp Sensor Enough?

  • Considering where all of our images go and all of the systems available, I think micro 4/3 is going to be bigger than ever, not die. Of course that’s just my opinion and you know everyone else else has a different one. With so many of my clients now being 100% on-line for marketing and company content, this system meets their needs perfectly, while being really enjoyable for me to use. Win win.

After reading a lot of comments, I thought I would share my two cents. I started on the Nikon d7000, and I wanted a lighter system, so I got the Sony A6000 and then the a7ii. While I loved Sony tech, I hated editing Sony files. To me, Sony files lacked proper auto white balance, and I hated how it looked. I wanted to get into more travel size, so I traded my gear for em1 ii and 17,25,45,75 1.8 primes. I love the files, and any time you get to edit less is a better workflow. Once you get over the fear of a smaller sensor, get ready to be amazed at how good they look in post-processing.

    I love my 45mm f1.2.
You are doing amazing studio work getting spectacular results. Everyone assumes these cameras are only for outdoor/nature shots. OM System has certainly focused its marketing on outdoor/nature genres. You are showing that it can do so much more. Thanks for this. They need to update the Pen series and also commit to street shooting.

Indeed, you probably don't find many studio shooters using Micro Four Thirds! But Panasonic and OMDS know they can't market to that crowd, so they're sticking with what they think are their best chances: outdoor/nature & high end video. Too bad, because that excludes a huge chunk of us regular Micro Four Thirds fans out there.

Well John I think you’ve done such a great job of convincing so many followers of the quality of Olympus m43 images that you should be rewarded by Olympus. I wonder if Panasonic’s LUMIX uses the same sensor. It’s about time that Olympus and Panasonic upped their marketing game. Superb photos by the way esp. Just loving from 3:02 to 3:17.

They don't use the same sensors. Only OM System use stacked sensors in MFT

I loved my Olympus system... but I traded out of it to go to Nikon... the two main reasons at the time was no "eye detect" and potential clients at the time REQUIIRED full frame images. So I went to the Z5. Roll forward a few years and now I have only APS-c Nikon Z bodies. I only do my own work, so I no longer get the pressures of having a MFT sensor. If I was starting again, no doubt I would go for Olympus!

Win win indeed! But still it's a tough slog going up against the marketing budgets of Canon, Nikon, and Sony. And not to mention all the FF Fanboy bloggers out there. Btw, I would love to see a video about your portrait post processing techniques.

Really nice shoot! Totally agree about MFT sensors being absolutely fine for social media stuff (that didn’t sound like a compliment, but it was I promise - people can assume anything social media is a negative for some reason).
Cameras like this or the new Leica D-Lux8, or in particular the previous generation 24mp Fuji sensors (a wee bit bigger I know) are so popular I think because they are so good for posting on social media; in the case of MFT, increasingly so it feels.

I agree. As sensor technology advances, the minimum viable sensor shrinks and the 35mm sweet shrinks with it. And (somehow) MFT sensors hit at APS-C weight class. So they’re the next step for full featured camera sweet spot.

Am I right that in this shoot the main is natural light and the strobe is set for fill? I’m a Nikon guy and currently run Z9’s but I’m looking at the OM-1ii as as you said, most work can be done on these micro 4/3’s and there’s benefits inn having lighter gear especially outside.

I dunno tbh. I mean it seems very capable and all, but I'm just not liking what I see as much as I do the Leica or even when you had the Zf. And that's just 4k RUclips. Maybe I'm seeing with my heart instead of my eyes. What do you think of the SL stuff for an autofocus system? I appreciate Leica is beta testing the software on us lol but I will admit my interest in piqued especially because Nikon doesn't seem to be making much effort to bring lens sizes down for the Zf so I'm considering just going all Leica.

    • @danny_r27

The Zf literally only has 4MP more than the OM-1 and the Lumix G9II beats the Zf by 1MP. When it’s this close in megapixel count you really gotta reevaluate what your priorities are. Is it resolution, brand name, or sensor size? because that’s always the reasons why people put down micro four thirds and don’t consider it a real camera system despite plenty of professionals out there that couldn’t care less what people like Toneh Northrup or Jared Polin say about micro four thirds and use these cameras to make a living. At the end of the day they’re RUclipsrs and not working photographers anymore. So taking their opinion on anything is mind boggling to me as a consumer when they only review cameras based on their own biases. Thats why Panasonic doesn’t bother with RUclipsrs like Toneh or Jared Polin. Because they’re not working professionals, they’re trash talking idiots with biases.
I’ve had Nikon, Sony full frame mirrorless, micro four thirds, Lumix full frame (S1R, I still own it), and Leica’s (albeit I still own them as well) and the one system I always came back to was micro four thirds wether it be with Olympus/OMDS or Lumix. Once you stop obsessing about sensor size, big resolution numbers, and what people say and actually use these cameras yourself without regard to anything people say about the system is when you will realize how much literal crap spews out of people’s mouths because they don’t have the slightest idea of what they’re talking about when they criticize the micro four thirds system. And how could they when they’ve never used the system?
I personally love getting images and have people thinking it was taken on a Nikon Z6II or Sony A7IV only to be let down when I tell them it was taken with a used Lumix GX85 and a Panasonic-Leica 25mm f/1.4 II (a combo that only cost around $680). It’s like I absolutely shattered their reality. Most people only view and publish photos online. So large resolutions aren’t needed unless it’s to crop significantly. Then add in the great colors from both Olympus/OMDS and Panasonic Lumix and it shocks people that it wasn’t taken with a Canon or Nikon. As if they’re the only brands with good color science 😂

I have Leica, Nikon, Canon , Olympus digitals and film cameras for that matter, and even a 720 nm Lumix for IR imaging. All this argument about this camera makes images look like this and that camera has that look are just nonsense. I can easily make the file from any of my cameras look like the others in post, it just takes a bit of time and process understanding. If anyone claims that he or she could tell which camera produced an image in a proper blind test, I would wholeheartedly advise them to use their clairvoyance and put some money on the lottery so we could all share the good fortune. MFT cameras are very capable. In most cases they can match a full frame and they have a few tricks up their sleeves that the full frames do not. Olympus has had features like Live Bulb and High Res mode for years. Others are just waking up to the game. For landscape photography, I really do prefer my OLympus to any of my Nikons or Canons. They are small, relatively light and compact and in most cases they negate the use of a tripod. Why, because MFT lenses reach their peak either wide open or just one stop down from wide open so the shutter speed remains very high even in poor lighting. Where shutter speeds drop the superb IBIS kicks in. I have shot sharp as tack at 1/2 second exposure hand held. I do most of my landscape photography in the very rugged hills of NW of England around the moors in the Peak District, so every ounce of weight saved is a great bonus, particularly in the harsh winters. The MFT sensor is small so the lens has great depth of field at just two stops down from wide open, another bonus point in the bleak English winters that go on for months. In street photography this is also highly desirable. A 17mm F1.8 is still at its optical peak @ F4 and the DOF is so deep that you can set the lens to about 3 meters and have near far sharp focus. They perform superbly when it comes to macro photography. The list is endless. Lets just be happy that we have so many options, and cherish the fact that still a photograph is created by the photographer, and not the camera. We shall see what the future and all this AI and Computational Photography nonsense will bring.
