I would have loved to see how many layers you could have sewn through using a leather needle. The right needle with the right fabric makes all the difference. I'm impressed that you were able to sew 5 layers of leather without using a leather needle and without using a walking foot. This will be my next Brother sewing machine
Thank you for this video! Just purchased this machine and I would be too scared to try a stress test on it, but thanks to you , I know what it can handle!
I got this machine for my birthday and have been LOVING your videos to start sewing my very first projects! The Strong & Tough claim is no joke... I sewed through my finger on the first night. Luckily I used your tutorials earlier to navigate the machine, so I was able to take a deep breath and have my mom press the right button lmao
Oh no! Are you ok? Is this too much machine for a non coordinated 10 year old? I thought this one had a finger guard . Does it??? I'm nervous now. She sewed her fingers the first day of class with her low end basic Brother.
This machine will easily last you for 5-10+ years no problem if you maintain it well. Just clean it out every couple months and oil it, and you'll be in great shape for a long time :)
@@TockCustom What size motor does it have ? most crap home sewing machines have .65 amp motor, my old kenmore has a 1.0 amp motor and can power thru most things, i have new and newish bernina and there is no way i would get them to sew thru this kind of material .. i am seriously going to look at the machine in more detail i would love to have a dedicated sewing machine that can handle top stitching denim and 'true heavy duty' upholstry home dec projects
I know right? Its funny that this was my second stress test, and it actually did MORE than the first one lol. That machine should last you many many years. Thanks for the love buddy!
Oh I'm so happy you got one! I think you'll enjoy it for a very long time before you'd need to 'upgrade' from this machine. Thanks for the positive comment :)
I just bought this machine from Amazon and being a guy that wears heavy duty canvas pants and such I needed a machine to repair and make adjustments to my clothes. Have a high vis nylon jacket that the zipper died in after 1 season of wearing so that’s a project, some beloved outdoor at home pants to fix 1 blown out knee and some leather sewing for a custom top shield for my welding helmets. Funny thing my wife saw me unpacking it and she has a $2500 Brother quilting machine from 2008ish and she goes “oh this is nice, I can use it too! “. 😢😂🎉 Of course this machine is going to be the repair machine and we’ll keep the quilter for those duties. I might eventually make a custom quilt for my tastes at some point after I retire. Thanks for the testing and boy this machine just rips through stuff.
Glad you're happy with this choice here. I like this machine so much I bought a second one. For an affordable machine it really can handle heavy and delicate projects pretty damn well. Hope you make lots of cool stuff this winter. Thanks a ton for watching :)
Bought this for my 10 year for a sewing class at the park district. It might seem a bit strong for a child but my hope is one day she will be able to see the hems on my jeans! This is her second Brother. The needle clamp was twisted the wrong way on her machine we bought for class earlier this session I'm hoping this one is easy to use and can take her abuse better.
Thanks for showing me all of your tests. I am contemplating buying this machine in the next few days and you've definitely sold me on this model. Happy Thanksgiving! (liked and subscribed)
Awesome. Just ordered my new ST150 Heavy Duty and can't wait to try it out. Have two other Brother machines and love them very much. Bought a new Singer 4452 and had to return it after sewing three items, the needle position broke. I hopeful that this new machine will be of the same quality as my older Brothers.
The Brother I bought is the very same machine in your Videos. I knew that the Brother ST150HD was Awesome but, OMG what a Fantastic machine it really is. It out stitched the Singer HD 4452 sewing machines by yards. I could keep going on about the differences in these two machines but at the end of the day it was the Brother ST150HD for me.
The Brother STI150HDH looks very similar to the Baby Lock Jubilant that cost $600. The Baby Lock has more stitch patterns, but I only use just a few of the basics anyway. I believe both the Baby Lock and the Brother are made from the same company. So get the Brother because it cost a lot less. My Brother STI150HDH just arrived from Amazon. It was only $300. The stitching and buttons hole looks the same as the other consumer machines that I tested that cost $1,500. I spent a couple hours at a sewing machine store testing them all. With the money I saved I can buy a lot more fabric. So far I'm happy. Happy Sewing !
Thanks for sharing your experience with this machine! I've had it for almost a year and I'm still impressed with every project I use it on. I also agree that it's incredible value for the quality :) Hope you're having a great weekend!
Hi, thank you for the informative videos. When doing the stress test, c an you please show the underside of the layers sewn, to see how well is sewn in the other side. Thank you.
Oh the underside looked pretty clean on the leather, but with 20+ layers of canvas there were 20+ layers of bobbin thread lol. They were all a tight stitch, but it looked pretty busy under there. Obviously you could just sew through 10 layers all at once instead of 1 at a time to keep it clean looking :)
I bought the brother St531HD tuff and strong. The light machine (not the dark one) and the needle wouldn’t connect with the bobbin. The feed dogs wouldn’t rise or lower. The presser foot was not allowing any flow through the machine it didn’t even allow silk to move with the presser foot down. I never knew I had to bring it down to begin with because I struggled to move any fabric with the presser foot down since I got it. It got clogged up so many times I had to go in and fix it. Once I returned it, the machine itself from being used was separating itself so the Bobby bin metal plate got tilted up and left a gap. It was a mess now I’m looking for a machine that I can grow in and this seems to fit. It’s been a nightmare with the other brother machine that I’m hopeful this will last me unlike the last one. I thought I could grow with the other one yet I was wrong. 😑 I used it for a lot of Christmas decorations I use felt fabric but damn it said tuff and strong, yet the machine didn’t do that. And I would clean it and oil it 😩🤬 nightmare maybe it was me or maybe it couldn’t withstand felt 😒
Awesome videos! You have a gift. Question: what is the thickest thread you can use with this machine? I ordered some Tex135 and Tex 90 to sew outdoor awnings. Thinking of using a #18, 19, or 20 needle? Can this be done? I would really love to know, and trust your opinion.
I really love your videos, they are super helpful! I have a pair of pants that are too big in the waist area, they have a zipper on the side and I want to make them more fitted. Can you please make a video on how to tailor pants to fit better?!
Thank you so much for the compliment! I do have tailoring pants on my list of videos to make, but it may be a while. I really appreciate the comment, hope you have a wonderful weekend!
It's very difficult to troubleshoot issues like that without seeing what your machine is doing. Forgive me for not being able to help - hope you figure it out :)
I just got the ST531HD which is the mechanical version of this one. I started sewing on a Singer 2277 Tradition (like the machine you used for your basic sewing video). Sewing on the Brother vs the Singer is the difference between driving a car vs driving a truck. The Singer feels so clunky and cheap after using the Brother. I wonder what sewing on one of those really spendy machines is like?
I completely agree with the metaphor you illustrated, feels the same way to me. Sewing machines are a lot like cars for sure, the more you spend, the more features and reliability they offer. You may find yourself looking at an entry level Bernina or Juki at some point - if your enthusiasm for sewing grows, go to a high end sewing machine shop in your area and ask to try out some other machines, there's a ton of great options out there!
Hello. I'm looking for a machine that can be used making small leather goods and small bags and purses. This machine looks promising except for the fact that it doesn't look like you can slow down your stitching. Can it stitch slower than as fast as you were doing it?
I have a Singer Heavy Duty 4432. It is supposed to be heavy duty (for home/hobby applications) and most of the time it does OK, especially when straight stitching. However, I find that when sewing through a few layers of webbing, or when stitching and passing over the top of earlier stitching, it often skips a stitch - especially when using longer length stitches or a zig-zig. Is this common with other machines, too? And is there any trick to avoid this (slowing down doesn’t seem to work).
Unfortunately, that's the issue with singer machines, although I've heard great things about that particular unit. If you're doing very heavy duty materials, use a reinforced leather needle with a wider eye. It will help a LOT.
Then I watch other videos and they can't get it to go through 2 layers of leather and have issues with denim....Are they just approaching the material wrong? I am looking to get a sewing machine to work on modifying clothes and tactical/hiking gear. maybe even making some of my own. Just don't want to have to hand sew everything. Any suggestions?
That's really strange to hear other folks having problems. Everyone I know that has gotten one hasn't had any such issues. One thing I can say is this is non-finished veg tanned leather. If it was chrome tanned, or has a chemical finish on it it would be WAY more dense for a sewing machine like this. Full transparency, I liked this machine so much I bought a second one to use as my top stitching station. So I currently run two of them every day and the only issue I've had is one of the auto threaders stopped working.
@@TockCustom thank you so much for answering me. That is awesome to hear about the Brother machine. It looks like a great unit. I am deciding between it and an older Japanese vintage machine. After hearing from you Brother is pulling into the lead. Love your videos and am learning alot. Thanks for making them
Hi Tock. Which of your vids shows using heavier threads? Can’t find it in your playlist. A Tex70 poly (with appropriate needle - 16 or 18) would be great!! Not sure what strength/size upholstery thread is, but that would probably be fine too. Hope you see this question. Thank you!
Well I know the inside is all built on a metal frame (unlock most home machines which are plastic on the inside) - so I'd imagine that if you keep it oiled, and swapping needles, it should be able to keep it up!
Liking this new machine but was wondering if we are stuck using just standard sewing and embroidery thread or if we can use heavier threads like tex 92? was wanting to be able to sew Bags.
I use 'Sew-All' thread for bags, and several thicker Top-Stitches, but I have not tried upholstery thread yet. That is on my list of things to do with this though, Keep an eye out for some new videos on that soon! Thanks for the comment :)
Just pulled mine out of the box love it but the auto threader is a bust out of the box calling customer service tomorrow but on regular material great working with neoprene going to take some trial and error
If you had to choose between the ST150 and the SE625 for general hobby use which would you choose? I’m torn between the toughness of this machine and the extra bells and whistles on the 625!
Wow, that's a really tough call. Both amazing machines. I guess I'd go with the SE-625 for the extra features and embroidery. I don't do too many 'heavy duty' tasks... but when I do... this thing is a beast! Either way, you can't go wrong :)
Holy S**t! That's incredible. How many amps is the motor in that cute little bugger? Would it be a bother to find out? I might have to get me one of those! I really like Brother machines and have two of them. A simple little SC3000 about 3 years old and a massive computerized VQ3000 sewing and quilting monster - one of the big (45lb) beasts with the extra large harp. Other than my vintage Kenmores, these are my favorites. I really enjoyed this video, as well as the one you did on simple maintenance. All (or most) Brother machines have the same basic configuration of the bobbin and bobbin holder, but I've not oiled underneath them the way you demonstrated because the manuals say NEVER oil these machines; take them to the dealer instead - h-m-m-m-m. I've been sewing for 60+ years and have a tech background, so I'm not afraid to open up my machines for cleaning or whatever (I frequently check tension disks for debris) and I'm beginning to think this is a ploy to prevent neophytes from messing up their machines, and/or to make sure the dealer gets his $100+ repeat fee every time a machine comes in for a "tune-up". I do this all the time on my Kenmores and have the tools and oil, so what's your take on me going ahead and doing this for my Brother machines, particularly the VQ3000. I know enough to not over-oil. I truly would appreciate an expert opinion.
Yeah this machine is a powerhouse for sure! I can't say the amps this motor has, but I'm sure its on their spec sheet on their website. I'm self taught, so I don't really care about what the manual says, and I had a much more experienced person than myself teach me basic maintenance, which helps. I don't consider myself and expert, but some of the machines I've been using for 6+ years still work like new when I clean and oil them... plus saving $100 every year per machine (of which I have 8) is a BIG help. I can say that I put this video out while under contract with BrotherSews, and even they endorsed this content... so thats a good sign :)
Thank you so much! Including my two terrific Brother machines, I have a 1980's Baby Lock, a bunch of vintage all-metal Kenmores, a White 77 Rotary machine and a EuroPro serger, for a total of 11 machines. I'm a victim of S.M.A.D. - Sewing Machine Acquisition Disorder, and I've loved Kenmores since I got my first one in 1969. My husband rolls his eyes, but I really do use them, even if it's just a monthly "run" so they'll remain usable. This is mostly the White 77, because it's sentimental. It was my mother's and she taught me to sew on that very machine. The Kenmores are easy to maintain, but the electronic Brothers have to be handled very carefully so as to #1-avoid static electricity (static+motherboard=dead machine) and #2-damaging the internal nylon and/or plastic bits. So your info is going to save me mucho $$$$. Thanks again and please keep making the great videos.
Thank you so much for all the great videos. I'm just getting into sewing to make custom shoes and I can't believe how informative your videos are. Amazing! When it comes to leather (I'd usually be doing fairly lightweight stuff) the reviews always put the Janome HD3000 at the top of the list and this Brother never shows up (it may be too new). Do you have any thoughts on the Janome and do you have a leather-specific machine that you use? Forgive me if you've covered this, but I'm just now digging into your videos. Thanks again.
The only two "Heavy Duty" machines I've used are the Singer Heavy Duty, and this Brother ST150HDH - They are both good, but the Brother seems to have quite a bit more torque for getting through very thick materials. Janome is a great brand for sure, but I'm curious what the price would be. Either way, I hope you find something that works well for you! I love the idea of making custom shoes too, that idea terrifies me lol Have a terrific weekend, thanks for watching :)
Toch, HELP!! I am having problems with my new St150, I am sewing some canvas to make a back pack! I have broken numerous needles but the biggest issue is it keeps bending and eventually breaking my needles! It will stick one or two inches and then the needle bends! Ive carefully replaced them different sizes and it is properly threaded!??? Just a single layer of canvas will not sew at all?? Do I have a lemon or what am I doing wrong you cant sew with a bent needle!!! ha ha ha Im sure its human error but I can't solve it!??
I'm so sorry your having issues, its very difficult for me to be able to help you with your issues over RUclips comments. I have a video on basic machine maintenance for this machine, that might help a bit. Hope you get it resolved soon!
Does anyone have a link to buy this sewing machine online? I can't find it. How does the Brother ST371HD compare? (Love your videos - I have watched all of them!)
I talked to my rep at Brother last week, and they are struggling to keep machines in stock right now. Just gotta keep checking their website, amazon, and local shops. It's hard on everyone right now. Hope you can find something soon!!
I've never personally used it, but I know that it's a good reliable starter machine for entry level folks. It'll also be much higher quality than your typical 90 Dollar Singer machine. I'd say pick one up if you can, if you don't like it return it and push your budget up to about $300. Great questions, hope this helps!
I know this comment was made a year ago, but in case you’re still curious, I have the Brother GX37 and it’s okay. It gets basic jobs done fine, but I find that I’m fighting with it more than I’d like to. It also cannot sew over anything even remotely thick (it has trouble going over hemmed side seams of a lightweight cotton fabric - so we’re talking roughly 4 layers of light fabric?). It’s extremely frustrating and I am looking to sell it and upgrade (hence why I’m on this video lol).
Tock Custom don’t worry, as soon as I buy it they’ll come out with a new model that has an auto thread cutter. Probably like the following day after my 30 day return window ends - lol!!
I totally should have. As you can imagine, the top looked pretty clean - but with 20+ bobbin threads on the bottom it looked pretty rowdy. There weren't any knots, and non of them were parallel, but they were all strong. Forgive me for not showing this in the video! Thanks for watching :)
lol right!? I do have a link in the description for this machine, and you actually get a discount if you use it, along with free shipping if you're serious about buying it :)
Oh that's too bad, it might be called something different in Asia, but I don't know what that would be. They also might just be out of stock at the moment too. Hope you can find something soon!
**Gets through 4 layers** (TC) "Yeah, that seems fine..." (ME) 'Yeah, but how's the seam?' (TC) "Yeah, its fine..like I said...seems fine" (ME) 'Hmm..I think we are on the same page then..'

Thanks for making them
Do you have a stress test video on the janome hd1000?
Unfortunately not, if I could afford it, I'd buy every machine on the market and review/test it lol
On my stickshift HD machine the needle flat goes to the right.
(it also needs a new clutch)
Sounds like you're red-lining your tach... or your transmission is out lol
Yep, there's your problem :)
Hi Tock. Which of your vids shows using heavier threads? Can’t find it in your playlist. A Tex70 poly (with appropriate needle - 16 or 18) would be great!! Not sure what strength/size upholstery thread is, but that would probably be fine too. Hope you see this question. Thank you!
But could it take this everytime everyday u sew...over time is when it causes issues usually. Am gonna check it out though..
Oh maybe I need to change the needle?
Why cut off threads
aww yeah the st150hdh is a great looking machine and will most likely be my "big" investment
I totally support that move for sure!
@@TockCustom Home sewing machines are sold out right now. Industrial sewing machines are not versatile enough for home use.
Thanks for the reply! Guess it’s time to toss a coin and grab my wallet. :)
I love the idea of making custom shoes too, that idea terrifies me lol
Have a terrific weekend, thanks for watching :)
What would be the non-computerized heavy duty version of this machine?
I'm not actually sure, Brother sent me this machine to play around with. I've this is also the only Heavy Duty machine I've ever used, and I love it!
I've just ordered one thru Amazon. Out of curiosity, do you remember what stitch length you used for your two test? Thanks & happy holidays!
Stitch length was 3.0mm I believe. Thanks for watching 😀
If brother ST150HDH had the knee pressor lift, it would be as good as Juki machines.
What do you think about the brother GX37 sewing machine
Really cool. What thread tension did you use?
Nice sewing machine, what's price in India, including text n shipping
I'm not sure, feel free to look it up on your local distributor :)
I'm going to have to buy this for bag making. my BabyLock Jubiliant seems like a toy compared to this beast!
If only this had an automatic thread cutter!
I 100% support this for sure. My bag making has gotten MUCH better since I got this :)
I also 100% support this comment as well lol
Tock Custom don’t worry, as soon as I buy it they’ll come out with a new model that has an auto thread cutter. Probably like the following day after my 30 day return window ends - lol!!
You should have also shown the wrong side of the sewing, to see if the stitches were properly sewn there too
I totally should have. As you can imagine, the top looked pretty clean - but with 20+ bobbin threads on the bottom it looked pretty rowdy. There weren't any knots, and non of them were parallel, but they were all strong. Forgive me for not showing this in the video!
Thanks for watching :)
You welcome... the demo was still impressive!
*Clicks "Add to Amazon Cart"* :D
lol right!? I do have a link in the description for this machine, and you actually get a discount if you use it, along with free shipping if you're serious about buying it :)
23 lettters in the English alphabet. Baby's first learning book? Embroider A-Z , Then stitch a binding?
lol, that would actually work with this machine. It might look crazy, but it would work!
The damn jeans is my arch enemy!,
With the Thumbnail, I thought you sewed a chocklett bar.
Hahahaha, this thing would turn chocolate into dust lol. Great comment 🤣
This model not avil in asia :(
Oh that's too bad, it might be called something different in Asia, but I don't know what that would be. They also might just be out of stock at the moment too. Hope you can find something soon!
This is a good advertisement,
I do not recommend this kind of load on a home sewing machine.!
For sure, this went way farther than I thought it would. Thanks for watching!
But.. making a sail, it won’t handle five layers of Dacron….
I honestly have no idea, I had to look that up. I reupholstered a boat with this machine, but I didn't do work on any sails
Sailrite machines would be my guest choice if you have the budget. For $299 we get what we paid for.
**Gets through 4 layers**
(TC) "Yeah, that seems fine..."
(ME) 'Yeah, but how's the seam?'
(TC) "Yeah, its fine..like I said...seems fine"
(ME) 'Hmm..I think we are on the same page then..'
lol this is a great conversation you were having with pre-recorded content
Spanish please😊
I'm not sure how to add spanish subtitles to videos, but that would be very helpful. Thanks so much for watching!
