    This is how you do a guitar microphone shootout.
    No talking, no annoying brakes or obstructing sounds in between.
    I greatly appreciate your effort with this video. Thank you.

    Such a fantastic video!! Great and concise presentation. Only bad news: this only confirms that I must start saving for a 121! 🙂Thank you so much for sharing!!

    Thanks a lot for this comparison, it helped a great deal on deciding to buy the TUL mic.

    I could live with any of them except that Heil Sound PR30B!
    So, since I already have an SM57, you have graciously saved me pratting around with anything else. Superb work.

    This is the best formatted mic shootout I’ve watched, and I’ve watched a lot. I’d love to see one on very clean guitars.

    Thank you for the great demo.
    I was interested in the Tul. It's nice, but sounds a bit scooped in comparison though.
    The Sm7 is sounding great, as is the trusty old 57 . I liked the 906 too.
    Great job on the demo. Very thorough yet to the point.
    I especially liked the quick comparison clips at the end.

    I love that TUL G12 mic. Such a great mic. Surprised about the Heil PR30B sounding as harsh as it did here. I've never had mine sound like that before.

    In first place is a tie between the Royer 121 and the Beyerdynamic M201. In last place (as always) is the Sennheiser MD-421.

    Why isn't the Audix i5 in this comparison? I have compared this mic to a couple of other mics and found it to be an excellent guitar microphone.

      Hi Henry! Unfortunately I don't own an Audix i5, neither do my friends. Maybe in a future shootout :)

    Also, was the boost on for the SM7, or was it flat? Also, holy cow that Tul had a shit tonne of low end hah.

    M201 and SM7B are the 'deepest' and fullest imo. They sounded the best to me with this tone.

  • @tasteapiana

    Isolated vs in track gives it away, the M201TG would allow for the most flexibility at mix. It doesn't sound the best isolated or in a rough mix but it captures everything more evenly than any of the other mics, therefore an engineer can push or pull any part of it to suit whatever you're going for. The SM57, for instance has the imprint of upper mids all over it and that would take CORRECTIVE actions to account for in many circumstances. The MD421-U4 has a, likewise, signature low mid growl to it. The M201TG doesn't have any of those such colorations. I get that guitarists wouldn't instinctively dig it but their wallets sure would appreciate the studio time it saved them after forking out $1,500 for a mix instead of $2,000, $500 of that saved by NOT messing around ''dialing in'' the guitar tracks so that they don't step all over the vocals or bass.

    I've been looking into the G12 and wondering if I should pick one up. In this demo was it dead center and was the filter in the bright or classic setting? Out of curiosity were all the mics in the same spot or did you put them where you felt they each sounded their best. Great demo by the way!

    • @funkpunkmusic
      @funkpunkmusic  4 года назад

      Hi Frank! The G12 was positioned on-axis, almost center, ~2cm away from the grill, bright-switch = on. All other mics were positioned at the edge of the cap, as a starting point, and then some of them were moved 1-2 centimeters to get the best sound.

    • @fearhk213
      @fearhk213 4 года назад

      @@funkpunkmusic Thanks for the detailed response. Wow, I was totally expecting you to say it was on the classic setting lol. I guess it does filter out quite a bit then considering its placement because it actually comes off darker and less in your face. Have you used that mic in a high gain metal setting?

    • @funkpunkmusic
      @funkpunkmusic  4 года назад

      @@fearhk213 I haven't used the G12 in the studio at all (I just borrowed it from a friend). I don't consider it a dull mic (there is a sizzle in the highs ~5k) with the bright switch on. What's missing is the upper-mids of the SM-57 we are used to, which makes it less "in your face". That could be useful though, somethimes that's what a guitar part needs.. or maybe you can combine it with a dynamic mic. Having said that, G12 wasn't one of my favorites.
