Bellissima riedizione di una registrazione classica, divenuta paradigmatica dello stile Chicago. Andy Schumm si dimostra, con tutti i suoi comprimari, il degno, intelligente, musicalmente colto e sensibile perpetuatore dell’eredità del grande Bix. Nella esecuzione originale la cornetta, se mal non ricordo, era quella di Jimmy Mc Partland, che è stato definito il più “bixiano” tra coloro che dovettero raccogliere, a lutto appena avvenuto, quella eredità così grande e, malauguratamente, così limitata nella sua estensione. Qui aleggia poi lo spirito di Eddie Condon, che ha saputo tenere in vita quella gloriosa tradizione fino agli anni del be bop e del cool jazz, regalando ancora, a noi vecchi amatori che alla fin fine restiamo sempre legati alle origini, tante meravigliose sedute di registrazione tuttora reperibili a piene mani anche in Cd e su You tube. Ai giovani che apprezzano il jazz vorrei dire di andarsele a cercare, anche sotto i nomi di Jack Teagarden, Pee Wee Russell, Bud Freeman ecc. ecc. Scopriranno una miniera di swing, di capacità inventiva, di musicalità naturale che sarà fonte di diletto e mezzo indispensabile per la comprensione dei linguaggi jazzistici più moderni e (talvolta forse troppo) sofisticati.

L’originale si trova anche su You tube cercando McKenzie Condon. E c’era anche il grandissimo Frank Teschemacher al cl., un altro genio musicale naturale, della nidiata di Bix, anch’egli morto prematuramente, in un malaugurato incidente stradale. Il suo staccato particolare e personalissimo, purtroppo ascoltabile in ben poche incisioni, resta anch’esso indelebile nella memoria di ogni jazzofilo. È bello che musicisti dotati di oggi, come A. Schumm, riprendano con intelligenza e passione questo indelebile passato.
