- This video is titled Bobby Orr and the Big Bad Bruins, a 40th anniversary tribute to the 1970 Stanley Cup winning Boston Bruins done by the New England Sports Network in 2010.
The extremely well-done doc is narrated by ex-Bruin Andy Brickley, and has plenty of great highlights, player and coach interviews, and observations from media and other National Hockey League types. (Can't believe this wasn't out there, but when I noticed I went searching for my copy and finally found it.)
The 1970 Bruins, led by the wonderkind Orr, widely considered the greatest hockey player ever, won the team's first Stanley Cup since 1941. Orr had a breakout season, leading the league with 120 points, the first defenseman in NHL history to record over 100.
Slot man extraordinaire Phil Esposito scored 43 goals and had 99 points, with John McKenzie, John Bucyk, Ken Hodge, and Co., providing ample support. Swashbuckling defensive center Derek Sanderson contributed toughness, sweep checks, and his share of points, and Gerry Cheevers and Ed Johnston were a nonpareil netminding duo.
The beloved team took out the Rangers in six, swept the Black Hawks, and annihilated the Blues, with Orr scoring the Cup-winning goal in overtime of Game 4, then flying through the air after being hoisted by St. Louis defenseman Noel Picard.

I remember watching them on cable tv on channel 38. We never missed a game. That music was amazing. When you heard that you ran to the tv.

Hi Pete I grew up in the North End at just about every game. I played pee wee hockey with the boys in the 70’s. This is far fetched but wondering if you have from the 1978-1979 season mini one on one? I played for the boys pee wee team. Me and Janet Dettore played the mini one on one and won but I can’t remember what game. I was hoping you might have it in any of your videos. I’m 60 now but just gave up hockey 3 years ago. Would love to show my grandkids. My name is Patricia (Trisha) Cappello. Hockey is in my blood. Love these videos. ❤
Awesome! Alas, my first thought is there aren’t a lot of full regular season Bruins games out there from that season, so probably not. I’ll look at what’s out there, though, and also keep an eye out!
I was born on 11/25/75 the last time Orr played as a Bruin in the Garden so I missed the party.....but thank God for color footage.
True. And there actually is a lot of Bobby ... just not of complete games. But in total, much of Orr's greatness is out there for folks to marvel at.
Pugnacity was pervasive as well as jocularity
Как жаль, что я английский не знаю!
Great goal, but this was game 4 of a 4 game sweep if the Blues won that game in overtime, the Bruins were still going to win the Stanley Cup anyway
That's not false. But in Boston, we thought it was an unforgettable goal that capped an incredible season by the most beloved player in Bruins history, who had yet to score in the series.
Where are the 1970-71 B's videos?!
I see them, Ray-Ray. Can you not call them up?
I was a 10 year old Boston peewee hockey player that year, 5 minutes after the game we're playing street hockey reenacting that play.
I think we all did that. It’s just what we did.
Attached the rabbit ears to the b/w tv, adjust the dial to 38 and watch the Big Back Bruins through the snowy reception. Oh my, that was a long time ago.
It was. But what memories! You'd finally get a decent picture, and then one of the rabbit ears would move ... good times!
My dad just passed on this week and that’s my first memory of him working the rabbit ears for Bruins games.
@@jasonwebb3727 Gee, I'm sorry to hear that, Jason. That's a great memory to have, though, along with all the others. I remember my dad taking the young me to Schaefer Stadium to see the Patriots vs. Joe Namath. My most vivid impression? The one those cold, hard aluminum seats made on my butt! Again, my condolences.
Somebody has to have that bench-clearing brawl vs. Toronto from Feb. 1, 1970, in its entirety. All I've seen of it are clips from this.
I agree. Too many other clips for them not to have it. What a travesty if they're sitting on it!
I'd like to see that whole game it was on CBS the Bruins won 7-6 I remember it we'll
It was a Sunday afternoon game with Dan Kelly, started with orr pounding Quinn behind the net .. remember it very well
@@arnoldstevenson4427 A classic!
