    I worked in a movie theater when this movie opened. At the end of each showing, we had to open the doors to the theater before the customers emerged. We'd walk in the theater just as Doc would say "Where we're going we don't need roads." On cue, everyone in the theater laughed. As the car flew away, everyone cheered and applauded. And we'd open the doors. A half dozen times a day - CHEERS and APPLAUSE. Every day. All summer long. People loved this movie. They were so happy when they came out of the theater.

      Summer movies in the 80's were MAGICAL.....there is ENERGY in the audiences back then.....I miss that feeling of being part of an audience laughing and applauding all the way through some of those block busters.....those days are GONE.

      My way older brother was asst manager of a 2 screen theater that was showing this. It was so successful they had it for months and months before leaving theater. My mom would drop me off at his job and I would just watch this movie two or three times in a row, eat free popcorn and soda and then catch a ride home with my brother when he got off. This movie and the theater kind of imprinted in my childhood.

      Jesus, this sounds like the greatest summer ever. During the summer of 93, my mom dropped my buddy and me off at the theater where we watch Jurassic Park back to back while she rad errands. I still remember it 3 years later. Couldn’t imagine how awesome it would be to do that every day.

      @Moviefan2k4 10 лет назад +5

      It is very rare indeed, made even more so by the time we're living in now, where even the most "family-friendly" movies are often a chore to sit through. Studios and filmmakers these days pander down to everyone, targeting the lowest common denominator for their audience. In my opinion, the only blemish on BTTF's record is the language. While not extreme, its presence is like smudge on an otherwise spotless mirror.

    • @GideonGleeful95
      @GideonGleeful95 10 лет назад +4

      ***** There are edited versions of Die Hard, Aliens and Predator that were shown on british TV during the 80s without any of the gore/swearing.
      My favourite line from the edited Die Hard: "Yippie kay yay mother cruncher!"

    • @donskiver
      @donskiver 9 лет назад +4

      ***** I'll agree that the original BTTF is definitely a product of its time. Most people don't even realize that in spite of it's brilliant story and heart, it still has that whole "1980's Rags to Riches" motif going on. During the Reagan era, it was very common for movies to have that whole "moving on up" and the "American Dream" thing going on. (Of course, they might have turned it around in some films where "being rich" isn't *only* about having lots of material wealth...it's about having love/friends/family/blah blah...though they still keep the wealth in the end. ;) )
      That's why I love the entire trilogy of films (though it wasn't originally written as a trilogy) they end up subverting the materialism message and sending a completely different message in the end...being the masters of our own destiny.

    • @donskiver
      @donskiver 9 лет назад +3

      ***** Yeah...a lot of that materialism in the 80s stemmed from the economic slump we faced in the 70s. People were working harder, longer, making less, and things were costing more. It's easy to see why pop culture fell in love with movies that show a regular person (just like me!) getting the job/girl/car/whatever despite coming from humble roots. Come to think of it...not much has changed. People are *still* working harder, longer, making less, and things are *still* costing more.

      They borrowed from the movie "Time After Time" and "Around The World in 80 Days". They even used the same date (different year) as Time After Time and Mary Steenbergen is in both Time After Time and Back To The Future 3.
      The main character in Around The World in 80 Days us introduced as you hear the sound of multiple clocks ticking, he's obsessed with time. He also used the phrase "Great Scott" like Doc Brown and the story was written by Jules Verne who's mentioned several times in back the future. Doc Brown has two sons, Jules Brown and Verne Brown.
      It also has a few odd connections to another 80's movie called "The Wild Life".

    One of the things I liked about this movie and the trilogy as a whole was when Marty arrived from 1955 to a better 1985. This may sound weird, but most time travel stories feature kids on purposely travelling back in time to change their lives for the better, only for something bad to happen. With Marty though, it was a complete accident. When he went back in time and accidentally changed his past so he wouldn't be born, his number one priority was getting his parents together. But after the job was done and he made it back home, he was super shocked to see that 1985 was better than he remembered. He didn't ask for it, it just happened without Marty realizing it.

TV shows that I used to think were great as a kid (Knight Rider, Greatest American Hero, Littlest Hobo, Diff'rent Strokes etc) are more or less unwatchably cheesy looking back at them now. There was nothing like a Breaking Bad or Succession or even Seinfeld back then on tv. Music is debatable, (I'd take the 90's) but if you look at the charting hits from the 80's, there was some great stuff, but also a ton of Rod Stewart/Debbie Gibson/Richard Marx, along with a lot of Europe-style (the band, not the continent) hair metal action going on 😅

Germany on Dec. 7th.1984. Why they released it early, or for how long, I have no idea. After I got to my duty station, I was asked about all of the new movies and TV shows state side, and I was talking up "Back to The Future"(It hadn't made it to European theaters yet). I even asked my parents to buy the VHS copy of the movie when it came out and ship it to me (It cost me $75.00). I was the only person on the base who had it! Once word got out, (my supervisor shot his mouth off) it was crazy! Everybody wanted to borrow it, from the base commander on down! I had Bird Col.'s ASKING to borrow a movie from an E-2! They didn't try using their rank or statis and was very grateful when I let them borrow it and remembered it every time that I bumped into them!😁
