Thank you for showing me how to do this. I'm setting up a computer lab for my church and wanted to make sure I knew how to do it quickly before the network cards arrived. One computer is XP and the other is Windows 7 or Vista. This will make sharing a single printer a breeze. :-)
HOLY COW!!!!!!...I DID IT!!!.....Your video was ever so slightly different when some of the windows popped up, but I was able to figure it out. You saved me tons of time and lots of money on geeks coming to the house!...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
I normally dont comment on tutorials, but your was absolutely fantastic, couldnt be more clearer. altho my situation is somewhat diffrent, I got my printer attached to a win7 computer and need it shared with a XP computer. But that shouldn't be a problem :) thanks allot!
BTW, I never saw the hand under the printer on my main computer which indicated "sharing" was activated. That confused me at first, but continued on to XP computer just in case it was nevertheless correct. Thanks for the video.
Outstanding mate! I've been stumbling over this issue for some time, XP-Windows 7 sharing, and this just fixed it! I was missing just one step in the process. Now my wife can print stuff with her new Win7 laptop. Thanks!
ah yes windows 7 does seem to have a bit of an issue with drivers at the moment especially with printers, i'v had the same problem with my lexmark printer. what i did was to Google the printer make and model followed by windows 7 driver. download a driver and install it on the 7 machine and when you install the printer it should sauce the driver locally rather than over the network. i tried it and it worked for me, so try that. hope this helped and thanks for your comment. nice one!!! : )
I tried your instroction to setup a net work printer between two XP computers for some reason after I selected copmuter name and printer name and did the search I did not get the working groop name after I did btowsing. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong tried few times. Edtering computer name or printer name is Cap sensitive. Thanks you are a good teacher Eddie
@rockstar7600 Ah sorry about that, that's something that has always been a problem with printer sharing. at least you have found a way. that's a good idea about the sharing folder. thanks for your feedback and comments. nice one!!!
Thanks a million for this video, I want to connect my child's xp laptop to my windows 7 desktop printer. The problem is I have to conenct him to my wireless internet in order to complete the printer driver part of your video. HOW DO I DO THIS? How do I get my windows 7 wireless internet to get picked up by his xp laptop?
Hey buddy, your video was very well done. I followed your steps, I still have a problem: My printer is connected to PC running WinXP. I setup network with PC running Win7. We share files ok, but i am still having trouble with the printer. It "doesn't find the drivers". And I don't know how to find (browse) the drivers manually. The printer, by the way, is a Canon PIXMA ip1600. You don't have to post another video just for this, but if You could give me some light...Thanks
@MyHurtlocker thanks mate thank you very much for your comment and your kind words and im glad the video helped you. its so handy being able to do this, i know printers are getting cheaper these days but the ink isn't and what the point toping up 2 printer when you can just share 1. in glad it worked for you and thanks again for your comment. nice one!!!
hello! this is quite helpful but i did what you said and the computer i want to share the printer with, has windows 7, and even though i already did the sharing thing from the computer to which the printer is connected, when my laptop tries to browse for it, its never never there...what's happening? or is it something from my computer that has windows 7.
Once you set up your attached computer with sharing, does it always have the hand underneath the computer? I followed the procedures but the hand didn't show. I tried to connect my other computer to my attached one and it can't seem to find it. I guess I'm having problems getting my attached computer to share. I'd appreciate any suggestions that you might have. Thank you.
helo. i did the same thing but my window 7 unable to locate the printer on windows xp and vice versa. can windows 7 join the network in windows xp. can u pls teach me, bro. thank you for this vdeo. it teach me a lot.
I have a question. We have 3 computers, 2 with XP and one with Win 7. One of the XP's has 2 printers connected to it. The other XP is a laptop and they work fine so far. However, the newest computer with Win 7 (also laptop) can see the printers (after following your awesome instructions) but It can not add them. It prompts that it has no access or athority or something like that. Does the Win 7 computer need to be a part tp the same workgroup or just connected to the network? whats wrong?
It is really very helpful. But I am getting a problem while connecting a Printer installed on an XP machine to a Window 7 (64-Bit) machine. It shows the Driver error. How that could be solved.
@summerproject92 Hi there, ah.. a couple of thing you can try. 1st make sure you have an administrator account and a password set up for both machines. Another thing is disable the user account control (if windows 7) do the processes again and than re enable it after you have done. That normally works for me. Sometimes it could be your anti-virus software blocking network access, you may have to disable your anti-virus temporarily, and re enable it when your done. Hope this helped. Nice one ; )
hi Viperfrank, thanks for your upload, but im having a problem trying to get my other pc(which is not attached to printer) to recongise my printer from the add a printer menu. I type in printer's name but theres a error message like u said, but then i went for browse for printer and it found my workgroup name, when i double clicked it it just comes with a computer icon which has my computer name next to it, it doesnt show any printer icons or my printer name. can you help please??
by doing this printer sharing feature, does that mean that the original computer always has to stay on in order for other computers to print on that original computer's shared printer?
Can you show how to share printers between Vista & Windows 7? My base computer has Vista & I can't seem to share a printer with my laptop which has Windows 7 64 bit..
I have a printer attached to a Windows XP machine, and I want to share it with various other computers, including Vista, Windows 7 and Linux. Windows 7 chokes on it because it has no driver. How do I share the WinXP printer as a virtual printer that doesn't require non-existent Win7 drivers? For instance, can I make my XP printer look like a postscript printer and share it over the network?
@rockstar7600 AH now that's the only problem with printer shearing with different OS's, is compatibly problems. But still try it, because my brother DCP-115c isn't compatible with windows 7, but that still works fine. So sometimes it will still work. Hope this helps and thanks for your comment. nice one!!!
@TheMohid786 Yeah its very much the same but the console for finding the printer is slightly different but its pretty self explanatory. Thanks for your comment. Nice One ; )
Yes, I tried to follow your video on adding a shared printer, but didn`t get very far. When I got on my XP PC, I was able to browse for the shared printers and found my Workgroup name which I chose, but then it didn`t have my shared printer underneath. So I couldn`t go any further. What happened? Can you help?
Sorry James, but forgot to mention that I`m running Windows 10 where the printer is connected to. I`m trying to share the printer with my other PC running Windows XP.
Hi, I followed your instructions carefully, but I have a problem that many people are having: my server(computer wired to printer) is my Windows 7, and my client is my Dell laptop using XP. When I go through the add printer wizard on my XP, I get a message that says "The server for the Brother MFC-5490cn printer does not have the correct driver installed". I believe this is due to the difference between Windows 7 and XP. Any solutions??
Hello James, I need to know how to set up, from the start, 1 printer to 2 computers. Both are running XP. Now, neither of them have wireless cards in them! THey are both desktop computers. So, how do I set it all up and have my one printer running on 2 computers? I would really appreciate your help!! Thanks.......... Iron Horse Cowboy in Covington, VA.
You can buy wireless cards for cheap on eBay or Amazon. You can get two for about $10. If you have a router laying around, you can connect them both to a router to share a connection between computer. It's a lot easier if you just buy the wireless cards. The wireless adapter cards just plug into the USB ports. They're made really tiny nowadays.
Hi, I have a local canon MF3110 printer is connected to a Windows 7 PC and set it to enable sharing. However, when I try to access the printer from my laptop on Windows XP on the same network, it does not detect my network.

not sure if it a VISTA problem, or a network setup issue, but I have a Printer setup at work on an XP machine and it successfully shares it's printer with another XP machine. My Vista machine will not recognize any of the XP machines on the Workgroup. Any Ideas?
well windows 7 doesn't find driver required for lexmark z600, and it doesn't seem to allow me to install driver to my machine aswell, since i dont have any printer connected. any tips?

Ok James, I was able to get my server name and printer name to come up in the Browse for Printer box, but when I enter the user name and password, I get a message about "The Credentials Supplied Conflict with an Existing Set of Credentials, do you really want to change the existing credentials?" If I say "Yes" it just kicks me out, if I say "No" it also kicks me out. So what now???
on vista what if it says as you try to connect to the printer windows cannot connect to the printer. acess denied. what do i do i need answer as soon as you can
i got it working, but when i restart the computer that runs windows vista, it does not print until i go to network and double click on the computer that the printer connect to, and log in with his user and password. why is that?
Man. I have tried for years to get my XP computer with the printer to communicate with my Vista and now, 7. Like, the house computer sees my network and all my computers but no computer sees this printer. It used to when I first hooked my XBox up and then I got new router. Now--and for the past 2 years--no computer sees this printer any longer and it used to. I am SO frustrated and I did all these things and no one on earth knows why this printer, despite it being shared, just don't work.
Can someone help me with this? I just installed a printer with wifi and I am trying to share it with other pc's. One of the requirements is obviously enabling file and printer sharing in Windows 7. I open the network and sharing center, and choose " change advanced sharing settings". Here i mark "turn on file and printer sharing" I save the changes(I'm admin) But when i check the settings again, the setting i changed is not applied! That's a bit weird isn't it? Can anybody help me with this?
Nevermind last question....I finally found a driver....used your expertise and now everything is working great....Thank You!
After several hours looking for a fix, yours was the only one that explained it clearly and it worked. Thank you.
Thank you for showing me how to do this. I'm setting up a computer lab for my church and wanted to make sure I knew how to do it quickly before the network cards arrived. One computer is XP and the other is Windows 7 or Vista. This will make sharing a single printer a breeze. :-)
