Yes, this "XYZ made you stronger" bullshit. I hate it so much. No, my abusive, manipulating mother did not make me stronger. Being bullied my entire childhood for being overweight, poor and wearing glasses did not make me stronger. Shit I went through at work that led to a literal nervous breakdown did not make me stronger. An accident that permanently damaged my body and left me unable to hold down a job anymore did not make me stronger. They left me traumatized and in therapy with a body that doesn't function the way it should anymore and this is my reality for the rest of my life. NEVER tell anyone something "made them stronger". Just because they aren't currently a blubbering mess standing in front of you doesn't mean they aren't dealing with a lot of shit when they're safe at home and you can't see what they're going through. Nobody has a perfect life. But these people that are always spouting off "it made you stronger"...it's a toxic mentality and they need to come to terms with the unresolved trauma they most likely have buried deep in their psyche.
This. Never give credit to your abuser for any strength that you have, never give thanks to trauma.
If you feel the need to "look on the bright side" and thank someone then thank yourself for finding the strength to move on, thank your loved ones for supporting you, thank your therapist thank anyone you like apart from your abuser.
Many people don't get over their abuse and trauma and it's not about pushing past and becoming stronger, you learn to cope the best you can, you might not always be a stronger or better person because trauma is not this romantic thing that changes you into a beautiful and humble person. It's hurtful and it's hard and any achievement a person has made despite of it should not be credited to it. Do not thank your trauma. Do not thank your abuser.

I totally get you with the getting modifications to love you body! I hated my nose since I was young, thought it was obnoxious, so I put a bunch of sparkly metal bits in it and now I love how obnoxious it looks 😅
same! my tits differ in size. i hated them, got sad looking at them etc. but since i got my nipple piercings and my sternum tattoo i absolutely love looking at them. every tattoo and every piercing i get makes me like my body so much more, better than plastic surgery for sure 😂
i hated my nose too because i thought it was wonky but somehow a bridge piercing made it look better than fillers ever have, piercings are wonderful
My mom says the same thing about "if you don't want attention don't dress like that" it makes me happy that's why. Why do people think it's ok to come up to me and bother me?

I hate people telling other people how they should feel about their trauma, it's so patronising and invalidating. Sorry you got comments like that, that sucks.
11:22 girl preach. I LITERALLY said this to my therapist yesterday. I said I don’t agree with people who say they, “wouldn’t go back and change anything, because it’s the way it made me back today.” I would absolutely 100% go back and change what happened.
🙌 Yes, say it louder for those in the back! I haaaate when people say "But it made you stronger." Pure bs. Childhood/ young adult abuse forced us to grow up too early. We lost something. We shouldn't have had to be strong, the adults around us were the ones who should have been strong and they failed us.

OK so first of all, thankyou for what you said about 'that made you stronger', honestly as someone whose trauma has messed me up so much, I never even liked the message of the song Fighter by Christina Aguilera where she is literally THANKING Her abuser! and people went on about how Dirrty was going to do damage to young girls.

Emily, you are amazing and I'm so glad you don't let these stupid comments get to you. I love how honest and open you are and how you can be your authentic self. I agree that dressing alternatively doesn't mean you are trying to get attention, you just feel comfortable dressing a certain way. I was super shy as a teenager and didn't want to be looked at even though I loved alternative fashion, these days I don't really care what people think. Also I'm disgusted that people feel the need to comment on what happened to you in the past and downplay your trauma, it makes my blood boil. But thanks for sharing with us despite these negative comments, as you would have helped so many people in doing so 🖤🖤🖤 Keep rocking beautiful (inside and out)!

👏Couldn’t agree more. I’m happy and successful in life but that isn’t because of my trauma. My trauma hasn’t brought me anything other than a substantial therapy bill and general dislike of people.
“Go to the police” isn’t always good advice. I went through the criminal justice system after being sexually assaulted and I’m not sure I’d do it if given the choice again. In my case, the process was more damaging than the assault, especially because he was acquitted because it was my word against his on the notion of consent even though there was clear evidence of violence.
I feel like the comment about dressing alternatively for attention just highlights how much other people make their decisions because of other people which influences the things they like.
They can’t comprehend how someone can like something out of the mainstream and genuinely enjoy wearing it for themselves because everyone else thinks it is “ugly”.
It’s sad, they need find what they actually like, not what everyone else approves of. It’s just clothes at the end of the day and they need to question why their opinion should ever matter to you!
I'm the same. I hate my body due to fibromailga an trigeminal so getting tattoos an pirecings make me like my body.
Also walking in the street getting people looking at me for singing the stick uou song as I'm watching this video on the way to do food shopping

Thank you so much for the comment about never saying that "x made you stronger"! That resonates with my soul. I have been living with a serious medical condition, which has resulted in me being is SEVERE full body burning pain for over 30 yeats, which has no cure. I have been told that it makes me stronger (& has made me who I am), which is really upsetting. (Also been told: "if you think you are in pain now, wait til you go to Hell", for not being religious. As well as "God does not give you more than you can handle." :( ) I totally agree with you that things like that should never be said for the kinds of things you mentioned. People may think they are being kind & saying it with good intentions, but in reality it hurts to be told such. Thank you for sharing all that you do. Mate, a lot of us 'professionals' go to our 9 to 5 in IT blasting rock and metal, sing our hearts out at concerts and might have tattoos that you cannot see.
It is true, in a corporate environment it is not easy to be alternative, so although my soul is shouting black chloting and chains I also have high hopes in my career so I compromise and I don't have the confidence to dress like this anyways, but you can find a lot of people in IT, especially men, that have very long hair, that have tattos hidden by a checkered shirt and that are riding those cool motorcycles to work.

I completely agree with you on not telling people that have been traumatized that "the trauma made you who you are" I had a terrible childhood and didn't have parents so people have told me that "it made you stronger" or that "it made you who you are " but what they don't know is that even at 24 I still wish that I could have parents that loved and guided me and I'm still sad about the things I had to go through as a little girl because NO child deserves to go through so much pain and when people try to tell me that the trauma made me who I am it just angers me because I never asked for any of it I didn't need to have my mental strength tested I was a child.

Some people are so stupid and judgmental ;( Why do they think it's alright to go around making hateful comments and hurting others when they don't even know them. Having been abused as a child, I know what it does to you, and even though I'm older than you are, I still have panic attacks at times and deal with ptsd. People who haven't gone through it just don't understand. I have also had someone leaving comments for me when I comment on videos saying "Being Gothic isn't respectful, you shouldn't be Gothic, blah, blah, blah. It's mostly a female person and I used to respond to them, but now I just ignore them. You are a beautiful person, and I admire how you are yourself no matter what other people think

I am angry with you Emily. For that person to think AND then comment that is disgusting! As a psychology student and hopefully a therapist, that comment really got my blood boiling. Trauma IS NEVER going to make anyone stronger at all! I suffer from a lot of trauma and there is no way it made me stronger. As you pointed out it made you a shell of a person that you would have been if you didn't endure that trauma. Trauma is never good, I agree that I hope that person doesn't have a kid or even a partner. That is inexcusable for that type of thinking. Hope you have a good week Emily and enjoy your holiday! Also I work in a school as a teaching assistant. My boss hired me and been working there for 10 years and still work there. My boss gave 0 shits about how I look, just that I do my job properly.
