The Bob Wills Masterpiece That Brought Texas Together

Bob Wills recorded "The Yellow Rose of Texas" in 1946.
The song's origins have been linked to the Texas war for independence from Mexico in the 1830s, and some scholars have argued that it's related to a specific incident in 1836. A popular legend says that a young woman named Emily West helped Texans win a key battle in the war, and the term "yellow" was sometimes used to refer to mulattos in the 1830s, while "rose" was a euphemism for a young woman. However, there's no evidence that the song is connected to Emily West.
The earliest known version of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is found in Christy's Plantation Melodies. No. 2, a songbook published under the authority of Edwin Pearce Christy in Philadelphia in 1853.
