Hao knows a lot about his rubber - he spent most of the match glaring at it whenever he made a mistake - but knows little about making an effort when he is not at his best!

You are highly exaggerating. I counted and he did it seven times in five sets. Moreover, it might be some ritual or the air was very humid, which might also explain why Matsuyama was slipping on the floor twice. But I agree that Hao was mentally weak, especially in set 2.

it's just his ritual when he lose a point. It doesn't seem to affect his play anymore.
