I remember when my dad had several of our fields subsoiled. The guy he hired (contracted) used two or three Cat D-6s hooked nose to tail with a single point plow. They were pulling it about 4' deep. Our ranch was in the Palo Verde Valley (Blythe, CA). The ground was originally silt from the Colorado River, mixed with desert sand (Mojave Desert). The hard pan they brought was in chunks like concrete, so dad flooded it and let it soak, after a few weeks, he plowed it about 2' deep. It worked wonders, we had the best stands of alfalfa we'd ever had. I was around ten years old so all of this is 60 year old memories... :-)

I've seen that same system used with a d9 and a couple d8s and a little deeper plow, they chained them together like a horse team?

Allot of current day farmers need to see this film. Nowadays its all about big heavy machines and getting it done in one day.

Yes, but they also know about compaction and will use duals and/or fatter tires to help reduce it. And there are plenty of subsoilers in use (which require big, heavy machines).
