How Bad Is A Bootleg - Chrome 12th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver FAKE?

- With the online market seemingly flooded with fake and bootleg Sonic Screwdriver toys - predominently from China - I figured it was worth taking a look at just how bad.....or good...these fake screwdrivers are.
This is the third episode in the series covering the recently released Chrome 12th Doctor Sonic screwdriver with red setting and also the new bootleg version of the standard edition 12th doctor sonic screwdriver based on the release from Surreal Entertainment.
Modelled on the sonic screwdriver used by Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor, we'll take a look at these two bootleg sonic screwdrivers from ebay.
We'll check out the packaging, the build quality and of course the electronics and then do a side-by-side with a genuine Sonic Screwdriver.
We'll also take a look at the potential risks when buying a bootleg sonic screwdriver from ebay!
Hopefully we'll answer any questions about whether you should be overly concerned at having one of these bootleg sonics but also address any potential concerns you have about buying one from ebay.
With the mutliple colour settings - blue setting, green setting, white and infamous red setting, let's see just how good or bad this Sonic Screwdriver really is!

the person who who created the bootleg of chrome 12th doctor's sonic must've really cared about the fans and probs a massive doctor who fan themselves lol and even managed to add the red settings!
The Chrome effect is just so beautiful and looks so realisitc it looks like it's an actual prop like not a toy version!
Yeah i agree - especially as they gave us the red setting AND gave it the rising pitch sound that a lot of fans have wanted for ages
Great video as always! I loved the burning of the instructions, haha. I just wanted to bring your attention to something. Even though the packaging is all based on surreal entertainment, the sonic design looks like a mix between the Character Options version and the Surreal Entertainment version. The sound is quite clear, like the CO version, but the lights move in the correct direction, albeit at a slightly slower speed, similar to the SE version. Additionally, the base of the silver plastic that has the knurling is taped on the SE version, whereas on the CO version, it's not. The LED's are the brightest out of any sonic I have seen the SE version was bright but this is on another level lol. Overall it seems that the bootlegs have taken the best bits from both versions and made the best version of them all lol. I just wish the plastic quality was a bit better so the light didn't show through the blue parts the SE version did have some light bleed to but it wasn't as noticeable.

I had this trouble with someone as they advised the exclusive chrome sonic and I got the standard one and when I went to dispute it, they changed the description of the sonic, but I didn’t have a “surreal” edition sonic so it was a good add to my collection as it is. Just got to be really careful on eBay
Ah man that sucks but at least it’s still a good enough version of the sonic. If you still want to go for the chrome one I’ve put a link in the description for the one I got or if you generally aim for ones in the £40-£50 mark you will probably be ok but maybe message the seller before you buy so you are covered 👍
I bought (or tried to buy) the chrome sonic from the exact seller you did, with the same result - standard sonic, measly offer of partial refund when I complained. I didn't screenshot the description, just argued with them for a few days, but I did get a full refund and kept the sonic, which I gave away to a mate. It really goes to show that if something on eBay looks too good to be true, it probably isn't.
Was it the cheaper or more expensive one?

Love these reviews mate.
Honestly people love to knock the fake/bootlegs but affordability and accessibility wise it's the only option for some of us. Feels surreal that such a long running and popular show seems to struggle to manufacture and ship genuine units to countries like Australia.
Only speaking for myself here obviously, but I couldn't give a rats if it's "real" or not. It's about being able to have something that is a huge representation of a show we love, and that's more important than paying the $120+ dollars just to have something be more official.
Also god I love the 12th Doctor's sonic. I'm a little sad he didn't get it earlier on in the first Capaldi season, instead continuing to use 11's and then the glasses.

The bootleg market has absolutely jumped in quality in the last 12 months, it’s insane. The bootleg 10th and 11th were really bad but these latest editions have been fantastic

Like you I took a punt on a low price bootleg chrome and ended up with a bootleg standard instead. I’m not even mad though it’s really good quality, I’ve enjoyed it so much it’s already become my go to daily carry.
Yeah from the feedback I've had it sounds like that's the common experience - so best to shoot for slightly higher price I guess. Same for me - I think the standard bootleg is still a fantastic sonic. yeah there's a bit of light bleed at the emitter when using the blue light in particular but it is hardly anything. When I started this series of bootleg reviews I thought I'd be showcasing all o the bad things to look out for but so far that hasn't really been the case
These bootleg sonics are absolutely brilliant tbh. Like, yes I'd love to get all official ones, but when new sonics like 12's and most re releases are so expensive it's hard to justify padding out the collection with them, especially when I don't care about the quality/authenticity, all I want is at least one of every sonic. I mean for 9/10 I only have dodgy 3D prints that look good but don't have electronics and the 9 one is falling apart so it's just for display, and my 11 is an unfinished 3D print I've made that isn't fully assembled cause I broke the electronics, oops. The bootleg market for sonics starting now is incredible for people in my position, that just want sonics for cheap that look the part, AND for customisers who rip apart and accidentally artificially inflate the value of the original sonics they can now just use bootlegs as a base.
I myself am gonna get the CO releases of the new and upcoming sonics but any previous ones, bootleg city baby. And for my more accurate looking 9/10/11 sonic 3D prints I'll be using bootleg sound chips and light effects so I don't have to over spend on official releases or take a gamble on "for parts" broken units. Glad to see these are getting accurate, sucks for CO and other DW toy manufacturers, but great for people like me 😅
Kinda upset I bit the bullet on a 12 sonic at 60 quid when I could've waited a couple months and got a chrome one with more features for 50 or an identical regular for 20 😂
@@Limes_not_Lemons same here buddy - on the plus there were ones selling for in excess of 100 so could have been a lot worse but fingers crossed the bootlegs might drive the cost of the official ones down
‘Bootleg city baby’ is absolutely a quote I’m gonna steal 😂 I know exactly what you mean though - the only caution I would use is particularly with bootlegs of the 11th doctor’s sonic. They are the worst that I’ve come across (hopefully I can get my review on those finished soon)

Thanks for the video. And every time I look at both bootlegs and reissues, I hope that maybe they will present a screwdriver of the 13th doctor in the design from Caractroptions, but with a rotating crystal like in the seven20 version. Just please. This is going to be the greatest pirate bootleg in history.

Hey, I didn't realized my 14th Sonic was a bootleg until I watched a review.. I dontnsee any complete difference to me. So, it's worth looking into especially with 14th/15th sonics start off as Comic Con Exclusives which makes them WAY TOO expensive on ebay.
Absolutely - the bootleg market is actually really good now (the previous 11th doctor bootlegs were AWFUL). Seems like the factories in china have clocked there’s a clear market if the quality is ok and there’s scope to actually improve on the official items. Like you say hopefully they’ll bring ones out for the 15th Doctor too
I wonder if they will make a vacuum metallized version of the 11th Dr. sonic screwdriver
I'd love that, it would work really well with the copper sections on the sonic. I'd also like them to make it a flip-based sonic rather than spring loaded
Haven't pressed play yet, but as per one of my past comments, I ordered and now I own one! Aside from the shoddy build (I had to open it up and sand/shave/move things around to get things squared off), it's surprisingly competent. rEALLY hoping we get a resurgence of the Master's laser screwdriver and River Song's screwdriver.
I would LOVE a new version of the master’s sonic and river song’s. They seem to be working through sonics and given the popularity of those characters it seems hard to think they won’t make them eventually
I personally dont have any problems with bootleg sonics they are awesome and affordable and amazing the only problem i had with fake sonics was the 14th doctor one it’s awesome but it came with some problems with the blue light instead of being blue its white ish but honestly idk i use red setting most of the time so its a win for me
Note : a problem I noticed is if u change the batteries on the fake sonics they won’t work well they will glitch so i keep it on display with no battery so i won’t have to change the batteries later
I really hope they make fake river and master sonics I would buy them in a heartbeat.
I agree with you here. The bootlegs are a great option for fans who would otherwise be without - and modified versions like this red setting one are actually great additions to the collection in their own right.
It’s a shame about the electronics being more fragile but I guess that goes hand in hand with the lower price. Safe decision to have the batteries out and just keep it on display
I’d love it if they made a river one that was a bit chrome maybe - you could then modify it at home to add in the dirt / weathered feel.
Same with the master’s laser screwdriver

I ordered one for about £20 and got the normal one which was to be expected but got a refund and tried again for one that was £55 and got the 14th doctors Sonic screwdriver instead which I wasn’t please about and the seller tried to offer a 5% refund with me keeping it as sending it back was a hassle some how so at this point I’ve gave up on trying to get one lol

The red setting is amazing, I really want character options to add it to their own sonics. Yeah it can be a minefield which is why I wanted to make this series, hopefully save some people from disappointment 👍

That info about the cheaper chrome ones is actually pretty good as to me it means that if I were to replace my broken Co 12 second sonic the best option to go for would be the £50 one

I'm gonna need to track myself down one of those chrome 12th Screwdrivers, but it's nice to see that even the standard one is pretty good. I picked up a Surreal one last year, but I'm definitely intrigued by these bootleg versions.

Ah man that sucks. The quality on the bootlegs seems to vary so wildly 😂 these are 2 of the best I’ve seen - unfortunately from my research the 10th and 11th doctors have been done dirty the most by bootlegs, their sonic bootlegs are just awful 😂
Yeah it really does suck.. I got a 10th Doctor bootleg, cause we literally don't get anything in Down Under Land, and when that broke I was okay with it, as I just wanted something to replace my lost Sonic from all those years ago. I have a touch control 12th, but as most do, the gimmick broke down. So I have been left with 3 display sonics lol.. :,)
I can't lie I got a bootleg sonic before because I physically cannot afford anything even when I'm trying to be a collector however when it comes to the electronics and looks it's almost identical and great and for that I'd say sometimes depending on the situation it's worth it but sometimes so is saving up worth it
I might get flack for this but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with getting bootlegs, I know some fans will say they’re awful but at the end of the day they allow fans to collect without being priced out - and the quality of the bootlegs is actually getting better and better. Like you say, sometimes it’s better to try and get the official release but other times that isn’t always possible. I just want to help people to know what to look out for and potentially be aware of before buying
I'm still so annoyed my 14th bootleg has a white light instead of blue and has a really noticeable delay, but this one seems practically perfect!
The electronics on these two bootlegs are pretty much perfect when compared to the official run….arguably better to be honest with the red setting
Can you do a 11th doctor sonic screwdriver bootleg video, my 11th doctor sonic I got off eBay looks fairly fake but I haven’t seen anime cover if
I'm actually in the process of doing an 11th bootleg video but the thing that's delaying me is actually finding a genuine one in-box that is the same version currently being bootlegged. I've bought 3 so far and they've all been bootlegs so I have plenty of examples of the bad but I want to ideally be able to do a pure side-by-side like I did here with the surreal entertainment packaging and sonic. Hopefully won't be too much longer - doing one for the 10th doctor too :)

These bootlegs are genuinely really good - and value for money compared to some of the character options ones listed
Damn, jealous I didn't risk it with purchasing one of the clearly not chrome but labelled as such versions now. I didn't trust the sellers refund process, but fair play to them for giving you one.
Yeah I thought it was going to be much more of a battle but actually the minute I sent the item description it was almost an instantaneous refund which was good
@@order66collectibles let's be real, it's probably because they are vastly over charging for these things and It'd be much easier to eat the loss then pay for shipping back and reselling it again.
I think the one I bought was a bootleg, because it appears to have that gap between the top section and the middle, not only that they sent me the version without the electroplating i payed for :(
Did you buy that through eBay? If so go for a refund and make sure you have screenshot the item description. That’s what I did and the result was a full refund - still disappointing though
@@order66collectibles yeah I applied for a refund, it was automatically accepted but I had to pay for delivery, which was so expensive that I decided I may as well keep it and not get the refund. It is what it is I suppose.

How can you tell if a sonic is a bootleg?
Depends which Doctor's sonic you have as they all have different 'tells'. With the standard version of the 12th doctor's sonic, the speaker sound is one giveaway but the other is actually the screw holes on the back of the claws by the emitter. In the official releases the hole on the back is tiny and no bigger than the screw whereas on the bootlegs the screw holes are bigger.
i've done side-by side bootleg comparisons for the 14th doctor's retail and chrome exclusive sonics which shows all the differences there to watch out for and i've got videos coming up for the 11th and 10th doctor's sonics

Can you repeat and type down the name of the manufacturer? You mentioned it on Instagram but without any subs, I can't hear it correctly. I would like to know what they would be making next for Sonics.
Sure thing - to be honest I had to check with them after that I got the pronunciation correct. The company is called Nawya Replicas - they're about to release a new metal version of this sonic and i can't wait. Same features but metal body. They're also working on a metal 14th doctor sonic

Yeh I've got the chrome one and quite happy with as it's got extra settings than others have
