- There is a bootleg of the Fourteenth Doctor sonic screwdriver online exclusive edition floating around, and I wanted to demonstrate the differences between the bootleg and the official Character Options toy. Here I detail the visual differences in the packaging and the toy itself.
This video has nothing to do with my usual musical theatre content, but what did you want me to do, sing about sonic screwdrivers?

Is it possible this is what they call a "second". A line of production that didn't meet up to specs quality wise, but is still sold to other businesses or sellers but at a cheaper rate, but still has a mark up price?
There's one detail you missed in the video and that is how the "BBC" logo is printed, if you look very carefully at the logo above where it shows the Doctor Who logo, if it's not one to one then it's a bootleg.
How I know this is when I got my sonic screwdriver on Christmas day, I knew the BBC logo was off because the text font style didn't match the official BBC logo and it also didn't have the correct straps that were holding the screwdriver in packaging.
3:54 mine looks like this with the red on the top too. I think it's because they cant add a wire through the tube to make it light up at the top or it would be too visible. not sure how the bootleg has done it though.
After having seen another review of the bootleg version most of the differences are cosmetic cause functionality wise all the same features are there but the one the other reviewer had the color shades of the blue red yellow and green setting wasn’t the same shade as the official character options version but I actually liked the blue on the bootleg version they had cause it feels like a better nod to Capaldi’s sonic cause it’s a closer match to his blue shade for his blue setting cause there is hardly any Capaldi in the design and I totally get what u mean with the other colors bleeding through in the top of the emitter cause I have the standard version and it looks like even though the standard version doesn’t have the extra colors functional it looks like a mix of the yellow and green bleeds through in the top of the emitter
I suppose this explains the sudden flood of doctor who sonics literally everywhere online (there have been copies of the 10t/11/12th Sonic's too). Its really annoying to figure out the bootlegs from packaging alone since they ALSO copy over the brand logos... :(
Out of curiosity, do the sonics still have the copyright marking? On my 11/12th Doctor sonic by character options, it has the copyright stuff on the battery cover, I don't know if they're still doing that on recent ones since I got it a while back
Personally I’ll take the bootleg the official is way to expensive and for 35 bucks for a bootleg that looks that good you can’t really go wrong imo
I bought what was advertised as a real sonic but got the bootleg. My claws extend no problem and the sound turns off as soon as I let go of the button. However, I DO NOT have any extra light effects. I can hold the button in all night and they’ll never change. So pissed!
I bought the ? BOOTLEG ? everything is fine, AND WORKS, Question::: Since the Original is no longer made, OR IS IT BY THE SAME COMPANY, or Is this the NEW Official version, and they just made it cheaper for the masses, U S NEVER get's the ORIGINAL Dr. WHO stuff first wave anyhow, we always come out second, I have to order animated missing series from the past on BluRay region B, from the UK, cause they don't make a US region A version, yes I have a Region Free BluRay player, but still US still is second tier on getting Dr WHO stuff, Just cause it came out over there first, I'm fine with my bootleg ? copy, NOT gonna pay an arm and a leg for a UK first version, I pay enough for the UK BluRay's, NO SECOND GUESSING THEIR REAL, cause they don't make a US version as of today
