Both the 1970 and 1972 Total Solar Eclipses were visible from Nova Scotia. One could say that if you were thinking which one Carly Simon was referencing, either one would be so vain that they probably think the song was about them...
    Happy eclipse day everyone.

There was someone who took the Ice Cube song "It Was A Good Day" and, using the references in the song whose historical occurrences overlapped, determined 'Cube was almost certainly talking about January 20, 1992.
Using references in THIS song, I'm sure junior detectives have tried to place likely So Vain candidates in Nova Scotia on those dates plus line up with other clues...

It's kind of like that old grade school joke "Someone told me you sound like an owl" and then the other person says "Who"? which makes them sound like an owl. With this song, the person listening would say "of course it's about me, how could it not be about me? It's obviously about me" which makes them sound exactly like a vain person and thus exposes them to ridicule.

This video was clearly made long after the song, given things in the house. The oven/stove is vintage. But the dishwasher, heater/ac control & some light switches looks much newer. I know YSV got another popularity boost from a Janet Jackson song in the 2001-2 time frame. Based on Simon's appearance, while visibly older while still beautiful, that might be when she did the video.

She’s the only person who got me through high school when my ex was beating me up everyday and my family fell apart and me and my brother were split up and put in foster care with strangers. One of things that makes this video so enjoyable is that Carly is clearly having fun performing in it .... Everybody involved in making this recording in '72 did a great job: the session musicians, the backup singers (including Mick), the audio people who mixed the song, and Carly's lyrics. I still like listening to it 40 years later, because of the craftsmanship involved in making something of this quality. And analog sounds better, for some reason ....
