RIP, Neil Peart. Words cannot suffice, but a little music helps. It's worth a shot, anyway. He is my favorite drummer and lyricist. He wrote the amazing words to this song...
I had worked up this acoustic arrangement of "Time Stand Still" recently in memory of the passing of Mr. Peart. I took the opportunity to record it this past weekend when Brenda happened to be in town (her first trip to Denver). I had performed this in one of my high school cover bands when it was a new song, and Brenda had also sung it at her graduation, so we both had history with and love for this song. The lyrics are more poignant with the passing of time. "Old friends getting older." Brenda and I have been singing together for over 25 years, so it was fun to perform this song, both with and as, an old friend. Let's give it up for Brenda!
I hope you enjoy this acoustic arrangement. The stomp helps on this one when doing it solo. Using it during the choruses allows me to play a less percussive style in those passages, to emulate more of what the synths were doing. And watch out for the 7/4 (at least that's how I interpreted it). Every time the chorus riff happens, it's in 7. And the middle instrumental section and the last build up are also in 7. Perhaps the most beautiful song Rush has ever done and the most meaningful lyrics Neil Peart ever wrote. It makes my cry every time I hear it and this wonderful cover is no exception to that rule.

Agree! I never understood haters for particular era of Rush - I always loved this particular song the lyrics are really beautiful and Neil uses some awesome twists on idioms and homophones My favorite:

Damn got something in my eye. Rush is great in all eras imo and I liked Hold Your Fire. Guess in minority.
All these wounds cant get Un-"wound".....Idiom: Time and Tide wait for no man, Neil REVERSES it has captain beached waiting FOR Tide--Neil will always be a genius, this song is beautiful IMO and I like addition of Aimees falsetto (imagine the guys mentioned originally Cyndi Lauper or Chrissie Hynde for the part--both great singers wonder what that would have sounded like!). Power Windows and this were my intro to Rush so I like these albums despite haters and of course my entry into rest of their catalog, former and later. I never saw them as "pop" sellouts which I heard at time from some others re: HYF.
One of my kids once asked me if I ever felt jealous of any other women. Immediately “Aimee Mann” popped into my mind, because she got to sing with Rush. 😂 Thanks, Mike, for letting me sing this with you! Still a highlight!

So few people know and actually listen and understand what this song is trying to say. For my 50th birthday the only thing I asked of my family is to listen to this song and read the lyrics.

Neil was a great writer/lyricist.....his writings touched my heart strings many of times....still does all these years later.
A good friend of mine was a big RUSH fan and he really loved this song. He passed away a couple months ago, he was only 52. Every time I hear this now it reminds of him, the lyrics really hit home. One thing may father always to me when I was growing up “Time waits for no man”.
I sure hope Geddy and Alex have seen this video...Brenda and Mike capture it perfectly. A near perfect tribute.

This is wonderful both of you. I am a big Rush fan and was gutted when Neil died. Then my dad died very suddenly on February 4th. He was 67 like Neil. You brought a smile and some happy tears to me. Thank you both.

Hey John, Happy Birthday 2024. Hope you’re doing well. Lifelong Rush fan here.
Been a Rush fan since the 8th grade back in the early 80s. I remember when this song was first released later in the decade. Singing along to each word, wondering how life might be decades later. And here we are. I will be 50 in June. My best friend's daughter will be 20. She was born 6 weeks after he died from cancer barely past his 31st birthday in 2001. We had been friends for 20 yrs beforehand having met in the 5th grade (1981, he sat behind me to cheat on spelling test. Got caught. Lol) he was my best man at my wedding when I was 28, and i was his the following year in 1999. To listen to this song all the way through is sometimes excruciating to the point I will skip it when random play brings it up on my playlist rather than endure the loss all over again, unless I'm driving to somewhere without much traffic. I can pull over and stop on the side of the road until I'm able to see through the tears enough to drive on, and do so again and again if need be. Time will always stand still with those memories.

I listen to a lot of acoustic covers, but didn't expect to find a RUSH acoustic cover. So when this came up on my YT feed, I was immediately curious. And oh boy, what an AMAZING cover. Besides the awesome vocal performances, I felt the beauty is also in its simplicity - no attempted flourishes or trying to compensate for lack of the full sound. Just perfect. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The biggest compliment ever is that Mike is purely loved (besides the always negative people). Especially while doing covers you have these die hard fan bases but he nails every cover so good, that they even love it.

Beautiful cover -- really tough song to play and sing -- handled effortlessly! Hope the Stooges get a chance to see it. Neil Peart, the consummate time keeper so keenly aware of the importance of every moment of life: I heard him say that he asked him self every day, "what is the most excellent thing you can do today?!". Hearing this song reinterpreted so elegantly is a truly touching tribute to the life's work of this great man and band. Thank you.

That was incredible, thanks to both of you for bringing tears to my eyes and putting a HUGE smile on my face at the same time. RUSH have been in my life since I was nine years old and now 40yrs later they are still there and always will be, so sad that Neil passed away but in my mind he's still here thanks to all the incredible music he created.
Absolutely Fantastic rendition of a Classic song by a Legendary band. The unique sound produced by Geddy Lee's voice is so hard to not only duplicate but do any kind justice has made it impossible for covers to gain any interest. But Mike, your voice compliments Mr. Lee's eloquently and elevates it to the quality of a Dennis DeYoung or Steve Perry or Andrea Bocelli. And Brenda's voice is spot on and even elevates the quality of the original. Your voices compliment one another perfectly, harmonically. Great version of this great song.
